NVIDIA Moves Into Direct Retail Sales of Video Cards

3dfx anyone? But 3dfx were awesome back in the day, and I'd gladly buy an nVidia-branded card. I've had several different brands: inno3D, Gainward, Palit, Creative Labs and 3dfx and had various experiences, so a newcomer would be nice. Plus I imagine they'll be cheaper than everything else.

Apparently, nVidia is going to be selling "generic" cards through Best Buy. They're manufactured by Foxconn.

XFX was also dropped as an official partner.

That's some shenanigans in my book. Is it a wise move to directly compete with your partners?

Well, Best Buy is the only retailer for that NVIDIA package as of now. So $299 is the only price of that product.

Well, Best Buy is the only retailer for that NVIDIA package as of now. So $299 is the only price of that product.

And it is priced in line with other GTX460 and GTX450 cards in Best Buy. Best Buy is a rip-off, but then again it costs more money to support a brick and mortor store front, so prices are higher.

The point is you aren't going to get a GTX470 at Best Buy for that price, and that is all that matters.

3DFX went out of business and nVidia acquired most of their technology. BFG went out of business, and no one swooped up any of their trademarks. Especially since all they did was rebrand PSU's and manufacture GPU's.

No one bought BFG out, they announced they would be leaving the graphics card market at one point and as of now the entire company is in liquidation.

3Dfx was bought out by Nvidia.

What do you mean who? Who is behind these cards? It's of course NVIDIA.

NVIDIA makes every single reference-design GeForce card ever sold (through a primary foundry* such as Foxconn or Flextronics), and then gives it to AIC partners to place their stickers and package it to their preferences.

It's just that NVIDIA is now using its own packaging people (who package Quadro or Tesla, or the 3D Vision kit, or the "DIY Gaming PC" kit in the company's name), to sell this GTX 460.

*don't confuse this with the chip foundry (TSMC/UMC), which make only the GPU and then forward the chips either to the primary foundry to make reference design cards, or to AICs, for their non-reference design cards.

Regardless of whether or not it's a good move for them to sell their own-branded cards, I'd still like to have one.

Many a time I've wanted to have such a "virgin" card that looked like one in the review pictures with nvidia-only branding.

Same if I was getting an AMD card, too.

Saw them at my local Best Buy too in Virginia yesterday.

Definitely a rip off in price though, you can find MUCH cheaper GTS 450's on Newegg and other online sites.

Massive understatement lol. But best Buy is like a PC World in the UK and hate to think what there prices are like.

ahh I thought Nvidia were only going to supply bestbuy, but your right prices on the egg should be a decent whack better.
