Onboard LAN Disappears When Overclocked?!

I pumped up my E6600 from 2.4GHz to 3.6GHz, system was stable everything worked fine.

But for some reason my onboard LAN just completely disappeared, so I had no internet access and could not find the LAN port on network connections.

So I set the clocks back to stock and all of a sudden I can see the LAN port again and now have internet access again.

I'm using a GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L

I changed no other settings in BIOS when doing this other than FSB

from what I can remember from 775 OCing, I always went to one of 3 things. CPU volts, Northbridge volts, or timimgs and ram voltage.

With your E6600 at near peak for "auto" settings, its time now to tinker and fine tune the 3 key points I mentioned.

not sure how any of them would make onboard lan disappear tho?!

have you installed EasyTune6 so that you can read what voltages are being applied in windows on AUTO?

I would much rather a CPUz screenie for core voltages also maybe the memory tab, and ET6 to show the NB, and possibly temperatures.

That screen only shows me CPU volts (maybe) and looks like maybe the ram voltage at 1.89 (VIN1)

BTW ET6 can be found on the motherboard instalation CD, under tools or utilities.


My best guess is its the rams fault. Changing the FSB will also increase the ram speed, and take it past stability, Im leaning on that call at the moment, but I need some screens to see if Im on the right path

Do you have a pci lock on the motherboard?

If not, that's why you're losing your lan, possibly.

That used to happen to me on an old Asus P55MX-L with no pcie lock

Exact same thing happend to me when i overclocked to 4.0GHZ on my P5Q Delux.


my 2nd lan just vanishes..... like its not even there. currently running at 3.5ghz with no problem tho...i never changed the south bridge volts.


left PCI-E on 100mhz as well.

Some older budget board also require to run the pcie freq at around 105-110.. slightly risky.. but unless you get a dedicated lan card or tune back your oc then you have no choice.. unless you don't like using the internet lol

That's if you already have it set to 100 and not auto btw.. if it's set to auto then try locking to 100.. then 105 then 110 until you see the lan come back.... don't go past 110.. fwiw fsb/3.33 = pcie if over 333fsb but that can only sometimes lead to sata data corruption, drive failure or gpu failure

3.6 on that mobo with an e6600 is highly impressive although I wonder if it's 100% stable? (no offense) With stock cooling too~! I'd def pay attention to your NB cooling also

What methods have you use to test for stability? I used to have an e6600 and a pcie lock-less mobo and I had many of fun nights trying to blow shit up... unfortunetly it never burned anything up but then again 3.2 was as high as it would go without a lock and gpu artifacts on a 8400gs.. iirc the hdd did corrupt once or twice but it was just a slop rig for fun

Even though it appears to be stable it seems it's putting a lot of weight on that mobo and to kill a lan for good is very simple to do also.. especially with that oc and if your pcie lock is wanky then you could be stressing out other hardware too... such as onboard sound, sata ports etc.

My PCI is not locked no, it's set to Auto

As far as RAM goes, I set it up to 2.0V at 1000MHz when I did the 3.6GHz OC and it booted fine, and I know its capable of doing this as I've used it at this setting on multiple boards with no issues.

CPU-Z at stock:

Is there a way to get the multiplier down? I tried setting it at 6x in BIOS (because it gave me the options between 6 and 9) and it told me the speed of the CPU would stay at 2.4GHz with an FSB of 400, which is what I wanted.

But then when I booted the CPU was running at 3.6GHz, despite the BIOS telling me that it would run at 2.4GHz (evidently the multi was still 9)

Is this cos I can't change my multiplier on this CPU at all?

I am willing to bet though that if he locks it he is going to lose 3.6ghz but then again it's better than losing other things in that setup...

I think it's the PCI-Express clock. If "auto" raises that, devices such as PCI-E GbE controllers won't work. So manually set PCI-Express clock speed to 100 MHz.

definitely, if you dont lock that you're OCing everything - including onboard devices and SATA controllers.

Socket 775 was a wonderful socket, but if you overclock like a madman sure enough the LAN and audio will flake on you, and in my case the SATA as well. The LAN and audio was Realtek Junk anyway, so I just used a sound blaster and a linksys card and overclocked away.

In my case I decided that 3/4 SATA ports and no Realtek was worth 3.6 as opposed to 3.0, but thats just me.

noticed this happens too sometimes.

You need to go into bios -> onboard and under LAN make sure its on ENABLED and not AUTO.

then you shouldnt lose it.
