P45->X48.Am i going to have boot problems?

NOOB QUESTION iknow but I am going to upgrade from a dfi p45 t2rs plus to dfi x48 t2rs and i was wondering if by changing chipset,am i going to have drivers problem when i first boot again?
Or because of p45 and x48 being on the same family,i wont have problems at least booting and then updating the chipset driver?

you should still be able to boot with some delay but your windows may be de-activated

Why even bother going from P45>X48 I have no idea, your cards wont take advantage of the extra bandwidth from the PCI-e lane and to be honest its a waste of money.

A much better upgrade would be a cheap E8xxx CPU that does 4GHz+ and will unlock some more performance out of your setup by feeding your cards more processing power.

Either way, newie was right and a clean install is the way to go no matter how much stuff you have.....it should be fine if you don't but its always good to weed out the crap you don't use by installing again.

The problem with not doing a re-install, is that windows tends to run like shit after a motherboard switch. It might work and boot, but I've found that it tends to be very sluggish and unstable.

Well noy such a want of money if i can find it for 14 euros here right???
Its after a friend RMA ed mobo and the difference is 14 euros so i think i ll grab it and i ll get a QUAD soon!
So i think i ll be fine dont u think?

Not always you have to do what the others advise u to do.
Sometimes u just want to see what is more commonly done or just have another opinion.
Furthmore i asked if i would have problems installing the driver after the upgrade,not what should i do...
And in the end it was mentioned that by upgrading to x48 it most probably boot slowly.

Every time I change motherboards, I reformat. Forces you to organize your stuff in a more coherent manner. I reformat each of my machines about monthly, so I reformat once every two weeks on average.

Who knows? It could overvolt something, get random driver errors, etc. I would suggest uninstalling all of your chipset drivers from the device manager before swapping boards. Like others have said (and what's commonly done) is reinstalling Windows.

Vista and 7 don't seem to give me any crap if I change my board. Just went from a 790FX to a 790GX and I'm not having any problems on vista64.

AMD/Intel, different things. Plus a 790fx and 790gx use the same chipset drivers, there are just video drivers in there for the 790gx.

Just installed the x48 this afternoon...
Everythink works perfect!
I booted on vista and after a couple of restarts and inf installations i had catalyst asking me if i wanted to enable crossfirex!!!!!
yay!!!!
I was saved from formatting!!!!!

Danish Devil, I thought I was bad, formatting every two weeks would have my friends insisting I see a shrink!

Anyway I like to format every couple of months or so just to keep things running smoothly. It drives my friends crazy, and I always suspect that Microsoft thinks I am running a couple more computers on 1 license.

This is the first thread that I chose to read and I am glad I did as I to needed to know how to handle Xp when I install my new MB. Which is the best way to go, now I know!

I've had a similar experience going from P35 to P45, and even different brands of P35 or P45 swaps. I usually still end up doing a fresh install, but when I went from a DFI P35 to Asus P35, it went pretty flawless and that install ran for months till I decided to do a fresh install on a whim. Glad it worked for ya.

Yeah me too!
I figured as it was the same family theyd be slightly different.
1thing of great importance and i noticed that after everything had been well is that p45 was with ICH10 while x48 with ICH9 and that was the only problem when i rebooted,that i had to do a couple of reboots!
But from my previous p35 ps4 to my dfi p 45 i did clean install too!

Despite what it seems like the x48 and P45 aren't in the same family. The x48 is actually more closely related to the x38 than the P45...

In fact the x48 is identical to the x38, you can even sometimes flash x38 boards with x48 BIOSes and get a free upgrade!
