@W1zzard I would like to propose the following under the software section.

Homelab

Administration (server network etc)

Defense:
We have many categories and sub forums under hardware. Arguable some of which are not even used that often. Examples of this would immediately be Crypto currency and mining followed by Virtual/Augmented reality.

Understandably there is infact alot of discussion happening in the threads active in those categories by those that are interested in the topic. I am simply referencing the total topic counts to drive home that a sub-forum is not necessarily weighed by topic count alone and more so the information provided within said topics is what gives worth to the forum itself.

That said I think many in the fields above are on the forums or interested in the field(s) in general. As such I would like to request that the topics listed or similar to the ones requested be added so that people with similar interests have a better way of expressing the ideals and information they share without losing such conversations in the vast seas of the broader forums.

Additionally I would like to add that I do understand that this forum is mixed and the focus is in itself technology. I would like to clarify that a benefit to the addition of these forums would be a broader pool of information being provided in the forum.

Just bumping this for the view, I would also encourage others to weigh in.

I personally agree with adding dedicated sections for this for those of us that are homelab, MSP, sys/net/site admin geeks that want some place more specific to post our issues, solutions, etc. We might not need two sections,

Honestly I think there would be something to gain from it, hopefully from more than just you and I, Sol. But we shall see. My weight on this as a moderator is no different than you as a member, but it still gets my vote as a positive and potentially useful addition to the TPU community.

Though the only issues I see with the requests is that both forums you suggest to add under the Software section of TPU are far more encompassing than just software, as you even list under administration. Networking, hardware, server, OS, software, etc.

It makes me wonder if Homelab, Net Admin, Sys Admin, etc. wouldn't be better served under their own section rather than Software. Which I would be all for as well, and would sign up to moderate too. ;)

@W1zzard what do you think about this idea? I think it'd be cool to have a dedicated section to talk about homelab and admin topics, I have no idea how many would use it or find it useful, but I surely would. I'd rather do that here than the Reddit Homelab and sysadmin forums.

:toast:

Thanks, you conveyed what I was trying to say much better. Probably shouldnt post things in such a rush.

YES, i need help. Ok what exactly is a homelab ?

https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/wiki/software

sorry this is the wrong forum :p but seriously, not sure if your being sarcastic. but if not a homelab is a server or networking equipment setup that you have at home either physically, virtually or both that you can use to do things like learn and study for server or networking certifications

build yourself a nice home automation system, run your own DNS server, filter traffic, deploy PXE booting. run high tier NAS systems. Learn to build break and fix these systems. etc.

Want to learn active directory? dont want to break your stuff? no problem. create an entire infrastructure using virtual machines on private switches and make it!

Not being scarcastic. I'm in. Building that FreeNAS box left me wanting more. I'm looking to buy a server class board and parts but for now I'm just wanting more knowledge.

+1
Gotta bring some enthusiasm back to TPU!

I'm not a networking guy, so my lab looks a bit different....
Finally moved all of my crap from every corner of the house to a proper office.
Fresh pic with yesterday's revived GTX960 4G and a bunch of crap laying around the desk.

I'm all for it (in one form or another)
while i do not run a homelab...........I feel the need to expand my knowledge :)

Indeed! Its all about learning! Thats why I got into tech!

its still a great start though! Most home labs are started using even normal consumer stuff but that doesnt mean you cant make build test and learn higher IT stuff! my first lab was a fx6300. Before that I ran websites on what ever would boot!

this is the primary reason for me! in time I ended up "collecting" quite a bit of equipment but learning is what im after in the long run!

over clocking is cool but this stuff pays my bills!

Hi, Solaris17! I mostly do electronics repair, so my lab will always look like a chaotic dumpster....:D
Though, tomorrow some small tech. startup is moving in to the office next door, so I might get a chance to play with some cool new toys (they are moving in a server rack w/ some other equipment)!
Kinda getting bored of fixing broken laptops, burned desktops, and coffee-soaked PoS terminals, along with other random crap :banghead:

So if it's not going to happen lets at least make a Homelab Club

Im waiting to atleast see if there is any official response one way or another. I have a bunch of content I want to write ASAP for it!

@W1zzard bby please!

Thoughts either way?

Do we need to recruit more people ?

I’d be interested in your wild rantings. :D

Good idea for the section too. Dunno why W1z isn’t replying to you.

+1 for this. I have a small but growing lab at home (if you can even call it a lab). I got two servers (I screw around with Citrix Xenserver on one) and am going to try to get some older Cisco networking hardware from work. If this subforum was to exist, I'd participate. I think those (if any) that are opposed to this underestimate how many people on here tinker at home.

mmm interesting...

...how many people on here tinker at home.
totally agree.-

In fact, with so many people dedicated to IT, telecom, or just hardware enthusiasts; I find it strange that this did not exist in the forum.

My home lab is just an old machine which I thought would be useful could run several things simultaneously and thus start up a small project that I have in mind. That led me to know and try environments such as ESXi, PVE, Xenserver. Since then I have been discovering and learning new things every week.

For sure thats why im advocating for it! Infact just got done a restring of my baby.

If I may be so bold

Dont chastise me for the wall, I havent renovated that room yet.

I like the rack and all equipment in it.
Cable management is ok.
Big switch, plenty room for expansion. Ubiquity one?
What monitoring system is displayed at the screen?

On the other side... Well, I suppose that room is not exactly the one to show to the visitors, but... I guess you wont spend more than 10 or 15 minutes sweeping and taking out the spider web in order get the clean enviroment that your baby deserves ;) LOL

Count me in, my entire home is pretty much a lab, my basement is a chaotic wreck of about 6-8 desktops in a few different networks and about 15 laptops.

Yeah cable management could be a tad better, I got 3 ft cables instead of 1 ft :(

The cables are color coded depending on task.

switch is a ubiquiti 48port (non POE)
on the switch is the router (custom made)
mac mini for netboot backups and dev environment
then a rasberry pi 3 B+ I made a chromium KIOSK that displays the URL of my monitoring dashboard.
for monitoring I use grafana with data provided by influx DB retrived using telegraf installed on my production servers.
Grafana has alert thresholds set for uptime and utilization and is configured to email me and send alerts to a channel in a slack server I run

Cable management? What's that? :D:D:D

You should've seen my new employer's setup. They have about 10x10m rolls of CAT5e just to connect all the crap located in one small room (approx. 3m by 4m, cables are unmarked).
Complete mess... Took me 15-20 minutes to find a correct pair of cables for their edge router (the router itself is a whole another "miracle of tech progress").

I feel sick

You would die around my house then, finding anything is like finding a piece of hay in a needle factory
