Maybe your joystick switches are worn out , they have a limited lifet

isit more noticeable in one direction compared to others?

He said it's the D-Pad.

if i recall, this is not a uncommon problem with the DS3 controllers. They have a ribbon cable thats held/pressed in to place with a small piece of foam, which degrades over the years.
So open it up and give it a good service and possibly replace said foam with something else.

I didn’t pay attention, well for Dpad same story, switches have a limited amount of clicks , ps3 is quite old I guess time to change the switches

The switches are like what is seen on a membrane keyboard, the pcb would need repair or replacement. Just buy a new controller

replace said foam with something else.
i followed this advice and cleaned all the pins and stuff
and it seems to have fixed the problem

in the event i need a new controller what ones do you recommend for a pc?

Xbox 360 or Xbox one controllers work really well for PC. No need for external tools. Just plug and play.
