p4c is la creme du la creme for skt 478.

dont have many choices since you dont want to do a complete revamp, pretty much limited to what youve got.

have you tried oc'ing? if not, it should get you some more kick to hopefully last you.

That's a great idea, except for one tiny detail. I am not an overclocker. I tried using Asus tools to overclock and never really seemed to get a stable system. I have heard it said by you and others, that this motherboard is one of the best. So, it's probably me. Is there an Overclockers for Dummies? Is there someone out there that can give me a few details of what to do?

Thanks! Cheers...

I was just looking at my favorite PC parts site, NewEgg.com, and found this little gem.

ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 LGA 775 VIA PT880 Pro/PT880 Ultra ATX Intel Motherboard

What do you think? Looks like I could keep 2 sticks of memory, it has some SATA connections, but it looks like I would have to add another SATA controller. Has a slot for my Creative X-Fi card and still an open PCI-e for future video enhancement. The only thing I'd end up doing really is replacing the CPU, which I should be able to do relatively cheap.

If anyone had to offer up a suggestion, what would be the best CPU to boost Vista and video performance, but not break the bank. I am still saving to get my liquid-cooled system, so I don't want to waste too much money on this one.

Cheers...

I wouldn't waste any money on that computer. Stay away from VIA chipsets, they suck.

So, based on your comment, OC'ing sounds like my only alternative. Any advice?

Thanks! Cheers...

Add your system specs in your control panel so I can see what your even running, all I know so far is your mobo and your running a p4.

cary i have a similar setup (<<see specs) i run that 24/7 (can go a little higher if i want) your mobo is supposed to be a better oc'er than mine so you should have some luck, whats the stepping of your proc? the best way to oc is through the bios as i also had stability probs using the asus app. there are many good guides to oc'ing those mobo's on the net.

check your PM ;)

Stepping is 9, based on CPU-Z. Cool tool by the way. I have noticed people talking about the memory like 3/3/8, etc... This tool shows all that too.

Ok, so here goes. I am fooling around with Asus' built-in OC features in BIOS. I have been able to boost using the Auto function to 10% and it seems fairly stable. 3Dmarks crashes at the 20%, so I am guessing that's a bad thing. ;-) At 10% the CPU is clocking @ 3.740.

So here are some questions for you OC tweakers:

1. Is it better to do the settings manually vs. letting the BIOS auto-configure?
2. If manual is better, any advice on settings?
3. Since boosting, PC Wizard reports the CPU is running @ 70c, is this too high?
4. If that's not too high, what is?

If nothing is going on, the CPU seems to hover around 60c and jumps when I launch WoW or 3Dmarks. I have bounced a few recommended sites, but it seems learning/getting information about OC'ing is difficult at best. :banghead:

I don't mind learning and trying things, but it would be nice to have a starting ground of some basic settings to try and those NOT to try. If any willing teacher of OC'ing is out there, I can post CPU-Z and PC Wizard data to show where things are at now.

Thanks in advance AND for the info/help already received!!! Cheers...

60 idle??? thats a tad high.... even on my second rig, with a 3.2 PrescHOT, it idles at 36 on stock cooler, only gets to 55-60 under load. Hell, ive taken that inferno to 4ghz on pelt cooling. (im selling it btw, as well as a 2.4ghz p4 :p )

Quick update. That was running at 20% OC. It became unstable in the middle of my last post and I downgraded it to 10% OC. I saw no improvement in WoW under Vista, so I switched back to WinXP. With the MB OC'ed by 10%, the temp when I pop out of WoW is around 60c. It then drops to 50-55c if I let it sit there for awhile with WoW minimized. Based on your comment and on other forums, I am guessing this is a reasonable temp.

Back to OC'ing, is anyone using an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe MB and currently have it OC'ed? If so, what settings are you manipulating? I am probably going to be raiding here in a few minutes, so I won't have time now. But, I am planning on playing with ATI's OC'ing to see if I can do some more with the video card since I have the CPU oc'ed now.

Cheers...

The BIOS is probably running like 1.8 volts to it. Drop it to stock and give us temps.

@ cary re-read the PM i sent you ;)

overclocking doesnt come over night (its somewhat of a skill) it took me more than a couple of tries to get where im at (which is not far but hey) be patient read up on it first then try. this will net you best results.

DO NOT oc using second party apps it is best done through the bios.

DO NOT use auto oc in the bios, oc manually for best performance and stability.

iirc all of the p4p/p4c mobos use the same bios features.

also remember that everyones reults vary but follow the guidlines and you should be succesfull.

Based on what PC Wizard is saying:
CPU Speed: 3739.75
CPU Temp : ~58c
CPU Volt : 1.39v
CPU Load : 12%

Again, this is using Asus' built-in Overclocking function that allows you to overclock the entire system based on a percentage (5, 10, 20, etc...). When I went to 20%, the CPU Speed registered 4GHz plus. However, 3Dmarks crashed and when I tried changing some in-game (WoW) video settings, it crashed. So, I backed it off to 10%.

Here's a question for you: Has anyone seen a good OC'ing document specifically for Asus motherboards? I noticed on all the different forums that people tend to use different terms to relate to the same thing. I guess I am curious if anyone has found an OC'ing document that really pertains to my motherboard. Might make the jump of doing settings manually a little easier. Also, I realize everyone's milage may vary when it comes to overclocking, but I am curious for those of you who have a similar motherboard, what are your settings? This may also give me a place to gauge what settings to change in tandem.

Thanks again!!! Cheers...
