id say the x1950pro/xt it will kill the shader heavy games like NFSC and Fear and whats not plus it will do better at higher resolutions than the 8600gt and 2600xt

I'm willing to bet that you've never even tried vista.......I installed Vista x64 two weeks ago, and I can't even bare to boot into XP. I just booted into it to uninstall all of my games to free up HDD space (i use that HDD for file storage) and it's SO much more slower than Vista. I'm formatting that HDD as soon as I make sure all of my files are backed up.

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
If DX10 was important, I would prob go for 8600GT but with 512MB as there is no way you would get a 512 GTS for your budget, then overclock it easily to GTS stock speeds...same architecture and the 512MB will really help in DX10 gaming.

this is true tatty but the voltage is lower which prevents the clocks he'd have to mod it.

Yes of course you are right I know BUT the 8600GT that stocks at around 540/700 still can manage 723 core and 950 memory with no mods which as I said is actually far in excess of the speed of a stock GTS (675/1000) on the core at least.....you can see that here:

http://sg.vr-zone.com/articles/First_Look_at_Overclocking_the_8600GT!/4925-3.html#Scene_1

Now more importantly, if a 8600GT owner is feeling a little daring he can do the voltmod, and if he does, without PCI-E power he can acheive 1020Mhz on the core on air cooling alone!!!!!!! You can see that here:

http://sg.vr-zone.com/articles/First_Look_at_Overclocking_the_8600GT!/4925-5.html#Scene_1

And that is better than an 8600GTS with a voltage mod and the PCI-E extra power........I rest my case! :D

No I know U werent m8 and as I said U were right but for the daring there is some crazy clocks out there to be had with the 8600GT is all I'm saying, imagine a 512MB 8600GT with a 1000mhz+ core with 2 in SLi, that would be cheaper than a 8800GTS 640 and prob faster!

Edit: lol just looked at your specs....U need to volt mod it more! :)

Speaking from experience, the X1950 is a great card. While I love my Vista, so far, if you do plan on running any games, I would suggest at a minimum to have a dual-boot. Under Vista, I am getting horrible FPS (10-20fps) but under WinXP I am getting upwards of 60fps with the same exact in game settings. I am actually launching the game from the same installation for both OSes.

If Vista is not in the cards for you, WindowsXP and this card are awesome. If you are a bit of a power user, Linux will absolutely scream!!!

lol... mate, im using vista, and there is ZERO, hear me, ZERO performance hit now since driver updates. I had an 1900xtx, no difference in performance between vista and xp, bar a couple of games that were subsiquently fixed by patches. even opengl games like quake 4 now work flawlessly, at the beggining they wouldnt even run on vista :toast:

im certain if you update, do some tweaking you will fix your frame rate problems. i love vista now for my gaming needs :)

tho it did start of rather dissapointing, so i can certainly see where you are coming from

Dude, then tell me how you did it. I just updated to the last drivers ATI put out for both Vista and WinXP. No improvement or change was noted for Vista performance. I am running World of Warcraft with virtually every video enhancement turned off. No AA/AF, nothing! Same system, dual-booting, running the same game at the same resolution. Vista lags, XP screams. If you have ANY advice, I am listening. I use Vista for everything, except WoW and I absolutely love it. If you can tell me how to get even close to 30fps, I will erase XP in a heartbeat!

Cheers...

I'd get the cheaper 8600GT 512MB and Voltmod it, they actually go higher than the GTS, they have acheived a corespeed of 1020Mhz!!!! I think highest recored GTS is 935Mhz.

Yes, system is completely update (and I just double checked). As for rig specs:

Item Description (Vista Rating)
MB: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe (N/A)
CPU: Intel 3.4GHz P4 (4.4)
MEM: 2GB Crucial RAM (5.1)
VID: HIS X1950 Pro 512MB (5.9)
- Gaming Graphics (5.8)
HDD: Numerous Hitachi HDDs (5.2)
SND: Creative X-Fi Gamer (N/A)
PSU: ThermalTake 850W (N/A)
MON: Gateway FPD2185 21" Widescreen (N/A)

Overall Score: 4.4

I was planning on building an awesome rig (~$4000) with dual X2600's, but the wife spent the money before I could. So, I upgraded this system to the MAX to try and get the most out of it whilst saving up again.

I will take your advice and go check out the Vista Tweaks section, as I am really hoping to find some nugget of information that I have overlooked. HIS support has been less then stellar in this area.

Thanks! Cheers...

vista ultimate also.

tell me what games ur running with problems.

when i first got vista i had some issues with low frame rates, but now i really dont have a single issue at all. im very sorry your still having probs. :(

what is your 3dmark score under vista? and any other game benchies u may have done. as it deffo sounds, if it is restricted to just a single or couple of games that its a non-os software issue. have you googled for vista + world of warcraft low performance etc?

whats your lowest scoring area under vista performance index?

Dude, there is no other game except WoW! :rockout:

Seriously though, I don't play anything other then WoW. What little time I can devote to gaming is focused on it. I have not run 3Dmark, although it sounds like something I should do. It's been a little while since I did, but I did scour the internet to try and get info on tweaking my video performance. Again, the odd thing is that on this same system running WinXP, this card is screaming. Based on this fact, I have to say it is something specific to Vista with same system/same game in mind. I have a RAID coming up in 30 minutes, so I will probably switch over to XP to run it and try bumping ALL the in-game resolution features up to see what happens. The primary reason I hate running WinXP is that it is an old installation with many errors that pop and I'd much rather get my Vista performance up and kill WinXP altogether.

If you think of anything, let me know. Thanks again. Cheers!!!

vista ultimate also.

tell me what games ur running with problems.

when i first got vista i had some issues with low frame rates, but now i really dont have a single issue at all. im very sorry your still having probs. :(

what is your 3dmark score under vista? and any other game benchies u may have done. as it deffo sounds, if it is restricted to just a single or couple of games that its a non-os software issue. have you googled for vista + world of warcraft low performance etc?

whats your lowest scoring area under vista performance index?

Just ran 3DMark 06 under Vista and it scored it at 3844. FPS was 12. I am rebooting to WinXP and re-running the tests to see what that shows.

Cheers!!!

Hmmm... 4166 under WinXP. I am guessing from the lengthy answer from Scrizz and I quote, "P4...", that the only thing holding me up is my CPU. During the 3Dmark test, during the CPU test my system dropped to 0fps under both OS'es. Generally, the FPS was higher under WinXP, but not an earth shattering difference.

Maybe I am stuck with looking for a new MB the supports C2D cpu's. My only hesitation is overall cost. I need to preserve as much of my gear as possible without adding TOO much expense. Any thoughts on a replacement for an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe? I want to keep my AGP video card and I am using the built-in Promise RAID controller, so I would need that too. I am looking at Asus' website now, but I am open to suggestions.

Thanks!!! Cheers...
