Bethesda's RAGE 2 returns you to the post-apocalyptic world of RAGE with new gameplay mechanics, new enemies, and fast-paced gun play. Unlike its predecessor, RAGE 2 uses the Apex Engine with Vulkan, which helps AMD cards gain performance over their NVIDIA counterparts. We tested using 18 cards at three resolutions, including 4K Ultra HD.

Can you do a Part 2 of this and test which settings are most taxing on performance, and which can be turned off or lowered for balanced FPS? Thanks.

Any chance to test triple monitor support? multigpu support? curious what this game can do with AA disabled at 4K Ultra

Thanks for the performance review :toast:...

It being Vulkan title, how is cpu scaling?

So RX570 is faster than 1650 ? By how margin ? Isn't 1650 is on par 1060 3GB or close?

Vega 56 beating a 1080 at 4k. Come on, 1080, you're embarrassing me. I guess my overclock would help somewhat, but it looks like this game is heavy in all the wrong ways anyway. I'm curious if Rage 2 scales well with settings changes or it's a dog at every level. I'm okay turning down some of the flashy bits to get closer to 4k.

I'd say Vega 56 is finally coming of age..... On paper it's a pretty serious chip. Lots of people hate it, but it's specs say that it should be good--even if it's shit, lol.

Have you not been paying attention to reviews on the 1650(Palit 1650, Asus 1650, MS 1650, EVGA 1650)? The 570 is faster in the vast majority of games(8-15% faster with the TPU game lineup overall), but especially when they're fairly well optimized(BF5), as this title appears to be.

The 1650 might do ok here, relatively speaking. The game doesn't seem bandwidth demanding as the 1070ti basically matches the 1080.

Most likely, it would match the 3 GB 1060 whereas that card usually beats it

Clearly AMD is doing something right :toast:
AMD cards are doing very well in RAGE 2, better than their NVIDIA counterparts. For example, the Radeon VII is usually around 10% behind the GeForce RTX 2080, but in RAGE 2, it matches it almost exactly. The same is happening with Vega 64, which is usually 20% behind the RTX 2070, yet manages to trade blows with it in RAGE 2. For the lower end, the picture is similar: we'd expect the RX 590 to be a few percentage points behind the GTX 1660, but here, it delivers almost the same performance.

Dear Nvidia, for the love of god put more bandwidth on your bloody cards.
I'm sure with a wider memory bus "almost" all Nvidia cards could perform 10~ percent better at 4K.
Vega 56 beating the 1080 at 4K is purely due to the bandwidth limitations.

RTX2060 perform as good as the GTX1080 non Ti at 1440p Ultra while beating GTX1070, 1070Ti & Vega 56 in both 1080p & 1440p? I didn't expect it will perform that well considering it's essentially a toned down RTX2070. This is embarrassing for those who actually bought those "new-used" Pascal cards... Guess I'll enjoy playing RAGE 2 with all the eye candy turned up to 11~ XD

As I had expected, Rage 2 is exactly like Rage 1: a game with identity crisis.

Except now, minus sweet graphics for its time - or sweet performance. Basically Rage lost all of its perks, B-game from front to back. Well done Bethesda, you nailed it once again...

I was honestly flabbergasted to see the crafting system return, and even more RPG-lite elements added, when this was supposed to be a fast paced shooter. Bullet sponges... the same linear 'open' world (with arrows on the floor to tell you where to go... really?!)... what a waste of time. I cannot understand why developers are so keen to copy over existing concepts so badly, even when they totally don't fit in the rest of the game.

I mean, I'm playing Borderlands 2 again right now... and it has almost all of the same elements, but it also has a very distinct concept and is actually a very 'tight' game; you collect loot and you use it to shoot moar faster to repeat the cycle. The game also offers RPG-style classes and progression. To spice things up, it has a very peculiar set of characters and a very distinct sense of humor. It borrows heavily from the ARPG such as Diablo but does it in first person and with guns. No identity crisis despite the marriage of two very different game types - they work well together.

Now enter Rage 2: has crafting but no loot game, has skills but is no real RPG with actual builds, classes or synergy, has a story but that is forgettable, has a big game world that feels linear (and might just as well be a series of missions, allowing the developer to tell a real story instead)... I don't get this.

I think it's worth giving the game a chance. It is not perfect, but still interesting.

I found myself hesitant with this considering how underwhelming R1 was, most of the reviews seem to confirm the new game not being that much of an improvement over its predecessor. I'll wait for a sale to buy it, no way am I paying full price for this.

Wait for <€15 I think.

So the reports on Steam seem to indicate that Bethesda slipped in Denuvo last minute (I'm not sure if this was announced leading up to release or not). I was hoping to test this out on Linux at some point given the Vulkan API and my very positive experience with Doom 2016. This won't be possible now unless they strip out the DRM. :(

Still, I wouldn't mind giving this game a go at some point down the track on my Windows box after the price drops - I had lots of fun with the original when it came out.

No Id Tech? That's sad.

From the review I watched on YT it just doesn't seem like my thing at all. Either way, I have way too many games that I started and ditched at some point just sitting in my backlog. Wolfie II, Tomb Raider, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Bayonetta, the list goes on.

User satisfaction with the game is sitting at 61% on Steam right now. Ouch! Rage ended up being a pretty decent game 6 months after release, and is an underrated play now. Maybe Rage 2 can get it together with time. I’m glad it still is sitting on my wish list and not my library, and am even more pleased I got a different release yesterday.

Rage was okay - I'd say 5/10. If you want to drive around a vehicle and shoot things, it was okay. The gameplay was nothing special, the story wasn't anything good and the graphics weren't anything amazing, just an okay game.

The images and what gameplay footage I've seen of Rage 2, it doesn't look any different over the first other than the horrible pink/green flashing that happens during gameplay as your meter (or whatever you want to call it) builds up. That crap gives me a headache. I won't be playing this game.

I felt Mad Max was a much better game, it kind of took what Rage wanted to be and just did it better.

Crap optimization + mediocre graphics and literally one of the worst engines in the industry.

any modern quad core will do, at 1080p (or higher resolution) on Ultra settings your CPU past the intel i3-8100 makes little difference
