my 7 year old htpc is due for a rebuild. currently an e7400 on a gma 35 intel mobo. 4 gb ram, vista 32, amd 7750 video card, intel 1gbit nic (mobo did not have that)

USES:

playback of ripped blurays on 1080p (4k later)
record from my dish stb via hauppauge colossus capture card
medium duty gaming
play flacs

PARTS I WILL REUSE:

case (antec fusion remote black)
sapphire nitro 380ITX 2 GB card
antec TP 550 psu
colossus capture card
256 gb ssd / 2 tb spinner for video recording
kb and mouse

I WILL NOT OVERCLOCK

i would like to go with a low power cpu, fairly decent 4 core i5 maybe. 170/270 mobo, 8 gb ram. it should last at least 5 years or more with minor upgrades. plan on going with a m2 ssd just to save space for another 4 tb spinner (my ripped stuff is on a NAS, this is for recording space).

WHAT I HAVE PICKED OUT SO FAR:

mobo:

Those parts don't work together. Start by matching the socket of the motherboard to the cpu.

If you don't play games on it the video card is a waste of electricity. I use 35w under load for my htpc and it'll run and stream at 4k no issues.

have the same case, but use a AMD A8-7600 and a Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI in stead, have had zero issues with playback.
The CPU only supports resolutions up to 1080p at 60 hz, but Bristol Ridge (APU on AM4 mainboards) does 4K 60 Hz.

Wen the A12-9800 becomes available it should be able to do all the streaming you need, and the GPU looks to be ok for gaming, and walk all over the Intel offering.

oops, wrong gen cpu :) had the correct generation but then second guessed myself lol.

i will play last gen games on it for when friends come over for head to head action, hence the 380. my primary game machine has a 390.

the 380itx is in a antec fusion matx case i just bought that card for the size as it will fit with room to spare.

with the matx case i should not need the laptop adapter or the miniitx mobo ill just use the fusion case and the antec 550.

sorry, should of worded things clearer.

This CPU will work with those motherboards:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117563&cm_re=i5_6500-_-19-117-563-_-Product

It's a great little 65W, yet powerful CPU as I have one myself.

thanks, i changed the cpu to that and cdawalls low power cpu.

@cdawall, i dont mind the extra $20 vs something a bit less powerful, my aim is to not rebuild it for as long as possible. but i do like the low power cpu. now its a tossup..

it is a hybrid htpc, will do double duty on occasion as a light gamer for guests.

Any board and a 6500 should fit the build pretty well. They really aren't going to offer you any different performance.

just add a tube of Arctic mx4, also if possible get a aftermarket cooler and call it done! stock cooler migght be loud sometimes and could reach 80c temps,

That is very similar to my build lol hope you enjoy it! Let me know how that silverstone cooler works for you. I have one of the short copper cored stock Intel coolers and am curious if I can drop noise a bit (temps are great)

have a huge tube of mx4 on hand.

went with the silverstone cooler for the (hopefully) low noise aspect. 35 watt cpu so it should be good. the old e7400 has the stock intel cooler. no prob with temps but i could hear it on occasion.
