Reconsidering my future upgrades. Q9450 and 4870X2

clock the E6600 to 3.2GHz or higher (3.6 is possible, my old one did, and lukes does). if you get an early Q6600, 3.6GHz WILL happen, depending on cooling.

as for the video card, a 4870 sounds great, x2 or not. the x2 can at least be transferred over to a nehalem system when they come out, whereas a CPU or ram you get cant.

Okay, thanks. Well now that I've slept on it I think I will stick with CPU I have now and clock it 3.2Ghz, then depending on temps I will try for 3.6Ghz. I may need some help on getting it there though.
But I will wait for my new cooler before I go to high. Am I right in thinking that 3.2Ghz made up of 400Fsb x8 is better than 3.2Ghz made up of 356FSB x9 ?

I think when I get paid at the end of the month, I will get my monitor memory and hard drive. Then wait and see what happens to the prices of both nvidia and ati cards when the 4870X2 comes out or is put on for pre-order, and decide which card to get then.

going on a GTX 280 or 4870X2, what sort of CPU speed do I need to aim for on my e6600 so its not a bottleneck at 1680x1050??

look at it this way: if you get 400x8, then all you gotta do is change the multi to 9x for 3.6GHz

I know but it depends on temps. 400 x 9 will be my goal, but if i cant get it stable or temps are too stupid then I may have to run it slower. My cooler is coming tuesday, I will have to see what sort of clocks I can get out of this and if the temps are okay, gives me a week and a half to decide whether or not to get a new CPU.

well since you have 800MHz ram, 400FSB would let you run 1:1 for exactly 800MHz ram.

I'm not sure what the other combination would give you in terms of options.

I've got my dad 666Mhz corsair ram in atm. The P5Q deluxe bios has so many options its untrue, lol. Looking about is seems that the e6600 gets bloody hot after 3.2ghz. I dont want to have my cores going over 50*C really. Oh well, only tie will tell, it will probably comes down to e6600 at 3.2ghz, or spend £100 and get an E8400 to run at 3.6 - 4 Ghz. But then if my dads Pc goes again i could end up with an early q6600 g0. Wouldnt you need water cooling to keep it cool at 3.6Ghz though?

I keep my Q6600 around 55-60C during summer with a xig 1283, under heavy load @ 1.42v OC'd to 3.6. I have a later mfg (march 08) G0 too..so an earlier one should run cooler at lower voltage.

I would say as long as you keep 55-60 as your OC goal, 3.6 could be very attainable on that e6600 if it is capable without insane voltage increases...time will tell like you said tho.

I rock 3.6ghz at 1.328v and it tops out at about 58C full load with an early G0, so you should be good to go.

Q6600's are 65nm, they are ok below 75C. dont freat about heat too much, just make sure that at load, the hottest core is below 75C... the reason being that quads rarely load, so you'll never hit those temps unless you're stress testing

k, well it seems my dad is probably going to keep his quad, regardless of whether it goes again.

he wants to buy my screen off me when I change it and run dual eve clients, or a client and other stuff on the other screen. so a quad is ideal for him, he'll need it to run two clients.

in any case, I'll see what sort of temps i get from my e6600 when i fit the new cooler.

i also dont know how much I'm gonna get at the end of the month, I've only been working thier for about 4 weeks and I cant get my head around their pay structure. i kno0w what I should at least get which is what I'm budgeting for, but if I get more than I expected I may get myself a new CPU anyway.

must keep some money back though, cus I want a backup fund for my xbox 360. It is a launch console, still going strong, but what with the warranty ending this year and the 65nm GPU consoles due out this august, and the dash update which allows installing games to the HDD, I'm probably gonna pick myself up an elite. And sell the old one on ebay.

Anyway back on topic, lol! I'll write back again once I have the new cooler fitted, then if you guys wouldnt mind giving me some help OCing I'd be really grateful.
