WinZip was a massive turd.
WinRAR was/is way better in every way.

This made me realise I was running a 2019 version though...

WinZip was a massive turd.
Not in the beginning and while it was still being developed by Nico Mak. But it really went downhill when Corel bought it ~2006. That's when they lost me. I had a "lifetime" license of WinZip I bought way back with WinZip 1.0 for something like $5. And they did keep honoring that license for about 15 years. But when Corel took over, they decided my "lifetime" license somehow expired and to keep using it, I have to give them more money.

I happen to believe a lifetime license should last for my lifetime. So I moved to WinRAR - but I never really liked that and quickly moved to 7-Zip which I have been using ever since.

Frankly, I am surprised WinZip is still around.

I'm more surprised that people still use WinRAR when alternatives like 7Zip exist.

Another Youtuber I watch did this too.

And the best part is he also bought a physical copy.

I'm sure that was the most sales RARLab has ever seen in a week, if not the last decade...

Now what could've possibly given you that idea? /s

Used WinRar for a time years ago but have since swapped to 7Zip

What?! You expect to get what you were promised?! :p

Did you try complaining to them about it at the time? I doubt it would have helped, but always worth a go, I guess.

7-zip does not install addwhere
therefore it is better
that is my reasoning
im curious about yours
What? Have you even used WinRAR? It's a tick box ffs, you're not forced to install anything.
It's a very lightweight program that extracts just about anything. I have used it since it was a command line software and it's never let me down unlike 7Zip which I tried at some point and found to a mediocre experience.
Also, I have never had any 7z files to extract, but tons of RAR files.

That's not how it works...
The program doesn't really care about the file extension, but if it can't extract a certain compression type, it's not going to matter what you change the file extension to.

I used winrar a lot years ago, figure I'd pay for a copy. I keep my winrar key saved in a couple places for good measures and install it on any new build/fresh OS install.

WinRAR is a lot faster than 7-Zip and output size is *usually* the same.

I've been a registered WinRAR user for years, guys... You may think it's a dead concept, but it's not.

Also yes, winrar downloaded from rarlab.com contains no adware.

Really? Since at least 12 years or more of using WinRAR I've never been prompted nor had any adware install.
Also yes, winrar downloaded from rarlab.com contains no adware.
This has been my experience every single time as well.

I use 7zip for years also and it the main argument it is free. You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. And that's important. Closing pop-up and use it anyway ain't the answer, like most do.

how is winrar better then 7-zip
One thing I like about WinRAR vs what 7zip lacks is the Options -> Settings -> Security -> "File types to exclude from extracting". If like me you have somehow ended up the "family IT admin", it's worth its weight in gold when it comes to only spending 30s on the phone with less than tech savvy relatives replying to "Hey, this PDF file won't extract!" complaints after receiving "Free Money.pdf.exe" in an e-mail attachment vs spending a whole day reinstalling Windows. 7zip still has no security tab at all and could definitely do better in that area.

But you can open it in 7-zip and drag the File out

The only ad i've had from Winrar is them asking you to buy a license and thats only if you open the zip file and most of the time you can just close it and carry on, but if you just unzip the file it won't pop any ads.
I did use 7zip a couple times but Winrar was always my go to decompressing application, I did use Winzip back in the day too.
