Problems no, but it would perform better in an x8 or x16 slot.

you might be loosing 10-15% performance in the 4x slot. It would run better in an 8x, or 16x, but it should be alright in the 4x.

BIG performance loss. I used to run my X1800GTO in 4x slot on my old hybrid AGP/PCIe board, it struggled with HL2: Episode One. Gave me some 25-30fps, after i got the new board, it was giving 50-60fps.

EDIT: 3DM06 isn't affected by 4x bus though

hello I do a lot of system test and I have a 6 computers...4 of them are the same with intel e6400 with 2gig 667mhz ram...the one motherboard is a asrock 775Dual-VSTA with a agp x8 slot and a pci-e x4 slot...then a Intel G31 board with a pci-e x16 slot...and last motherboard to mention gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4 with PCI-E 2.0 x16...
The performance difference between these slots are barely enough to mention maybe 2% at tests like CRYSIS or 3dmark 06...The only problem I experience was the gen1 settings on the bios...NVIDIA updated the new 8800gt cards to not support old PCI-E slots but this can be fixed with a bios update on the card...(IF THE CARD BOOTS DON'T WORRY)

Here is a link if you want to see the tests done by TOMS HARDWARE
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pci-express-2-0,1915.html

Hope it helps

I think you can change the speed in BIOS. But there won't be any potiential difference from 4X vs 8X or 16X. Like it won't make a huge difference from 3dmark06 from 2000 marks or so.

the tests done by Tom's Hardware are not realy helping here.
thy tested the PCIe 2 slot.
a PCI2 2 *4 = PCIe 1.1 * 8

for the results to be valid here we need a PCIe 2 *2 (=PCIe 1.1 *4)

you can expact lower performance. How much lower ? depand on the game you play.

Cpu limited I guess because I have a similar setup the only differance apart from the mobo is the cpu where I have an AMD 64 X2 6000 @ 3.2ghz and I get 11000. I also have an 8800GT and 2gb RAM

I don't think the E4300 bottlenecks the 8800GT? Check my system specs, it shows the 3dMark06 score 12782.

Sure my E4300 is at 3.0Ghz, but the 8800GT was also oc'd.

I forgot, yes, if it's a PCIe 2.0 slot, it's fine. Mine was 1.0 so if sucked:shadedshu

an 8800GT will be limited at 4x, think about it.

Pcie 4x will bottleneck a 8800GTS(G80) by about 10%,

now think of what it will do to your 8800GT

but thats a good board, sell it and upgrade to Pcie 16X slot, my brother actually has that same board in a pc with his 7900GS installed

but when I put my HD3850 or 3870 in it murders the preformance, about 30% sometimes, thats an Ati card though.

Well I am doing tests here at the moment...Like I said before I have a asrock MB with a x4 slot and a intel G31 with a x16 slot...3d mark 2006 shows a 40point difference on the slower slot and crysis shows about half a frame slower...Both are running Intel 6400 cpus 2gig 667mhz ram and POV GEFORCE 8800gt 512mb cards with updated bios for the GEN1 issue...So in my experience the speed decrease if any is not even worth mentioning...

As for your 3D mark score...My Intel e6400 at 2.5ghz with the pci-e x4 slot and the geforce 8800gt get about 9100 dmarks so your score is a bit low

ATI's tend to use system ram/mobo more, for some reason.

As has been discovered, the 8800GT isnt so bad in a 4x slot - as was said, the G80 cards had about 10% limitation (GTS models) and the G92 cards have less memory/memory bandwidth, so the effects would be less again.

for a good mobo i cant get over reccomending the one in either of my rigs, both OC great and are feature packed, despite one being micro ATX. Others here will reccomend you some good gigabyte models, they are cheaper but often perform/OC just the same as the asus ones.

overall a slower card, so probably not that bad.

I remember reading at toms (yeah, toms) about tests on an 8800GTX - the results really were about 10% loss at 8x, upto maybe 15-25% at 4x (worst case)

When you look at a card thats 25% slower (or more) than an 8800GTX, the reduction in speed will be quite negligible - and you'll have a good card for your NEXT system!

(dont forget most crossfire/SLI solutions these days are still 8x/8x or 16x/4x)

Mine does 16x/16x and I consider it an old board. 590SLi chipset.
In any case if you're that worried about it, you can overclock your PCI-E slot to gain back some of that missing bandwidth... but 120 is pretty much considered the max safe spot, I wouldn't go over 115 though.

Benchmark Scores Nyooom.
Mine does 16x/16x and I consider it an old board. 590SLi chipset.
In any case if you're that worried about it, you can overclock your PCI-E slot to gain back some of that missing bandwidth... but 120 is pretty much considered the max safe spot, I wouldn't go over 115 though.

mobos have gone backwards... i remember Nforce 4 with dual 16x, yet barely any mobos have that now on modern chipsets (excluding tri SLI boards, which have 16x/16x/8x)
