RX480 crashes when installing drivers

I have a strange issue with an old Gigabyte RX 480.

when I attempt to install the official AMD drivers, it gets to the part where it installs the actual drivers and the PC crashes (monitor goes off), the GPU goes to 100% fan speed and does not reboot.

I have tried several versions of the drivers going back 2 years with the same result & I have also tried the graphics card in two entirely different PCs, one of which had a fresh copy of Windows 10 on it.

It's never been overclocked or flashed and all the ports on the card work (without the drivers).

The graphics card works fine if I do not install the video drivers. After a failed attempt, I have to go into safe mode and uninstall the drivers.

Any help with resolving the issue would be appreciated!

Hello.
Would you be so kind and share with us some info?
First of all please make some pictures : GPU-z main screen, GPU-z advanced tab with memory info, stickers from the card.
After this share with us your system specs like hardware + software (OS version)
Then it would be nice to inform us if you owned this card for a long time and now is started to act strange or you bought it like this
Cheers

Where and when did you get this card?

Lets see your system specs

Got exactly the same problem just 2h ago. Own the gigabyte rx480 5 years now. Was playing rdr2, then suddenly black screen, fans at 100%. Rebooted, but before I got to the Windows screen, again the same. Went into safe mode and uninstalled the driver with ddu. Then i could boot normally. Tried to install Adrenalin, and during driver install same happens. Did a BIOS and chipset driver Update, nothing helps. Btw. Have to be offline because when online Windows installs automatically a driver and the black screen issue is back.

Changed nothing on my system, have a ryzen 1600x, msi mortar 450m, bequiet straight power 10.

Too vague, need more system spec details.

Got an rx470 going for £50 if anyone's interested?

The gpu/vram has gone bad, plain and simple. Baking would solve the issue for a week or so.
Or there is a small chance there is something wrong with the gpus vrm, if you got an oscilloscope you can check if all phases are working properly. But i dont think its your case, as vrm related stuff only shows up under load, ie when running a game. But in windows the card should work fine. Else its not vrm related.
