Jim Keller, the VLSI guru who led the team behind AMD's spectacular comeback in the x86 processor market with "Zen," has reportedly quit his job at Tesla to join AMD's bête noire, Intel. Following his work on "Zen," Keller had joined Tesla to work on self-driving car hardware. Keller joins Raja Koduri at Intel, the other big former-AMD name, who led Radeon Technologies Group (RTG).

PC Perspective comments that big names like Keller and Koduri joining Intel could provide clues as to Intel's current state and the direction it's heading in. The company appears to be in a state of shake-up from a decade of complacency and lethargy in its core business. Koduri could be putting together a team of people familiar to him for a new clean-slate project. The last time Intel had a clean slate was ten years ago, with "Nehalem."

I missed since when Intel is called really blue giant? It is a name historically for IBM.

IBM is "big blue."

I know I am an arse.

Also did Jim work at VLSI? It just mixes up with the company name. I've read it and misunderstood immediately also.

sorry

I always wondered , aren't these highly skilled architects that jump from company to company a massive threat to confidential corporate developments ?

On the next episode of silicon nightmares!
Jim Ramsay visits a chipmaker that lost touch with his customers!

"Oi! come here, you been serving this chip? pffftt... for how long have you been making this?
7 years? bloody hell! F$%k me..."

"This paste you put here, what is that?! its a bland hot mess. You tell me you put this on a 2000$ chip? You donkey!"

Jim is modern day Wernher Von Braun, he doesn't care as long he does what he likes and dreams.

Meh... I said it mixes up. Are you implying that I do not understand what it means? I still remember the company delivering many core PC components at the early years, besides his pioneering in DEC alpha team that actually should be noted as his home land where he comes.

Just misleading.

Of source he wouldn't care , it's the companies themselves that I am talking about. Are they fine with him leaving after a couple of years potential exposing everything they had in the pipeline to their biggest competitors ? I'm sure they sign all kinds of agreements to prevent this but who the hell can really make sure none of this happens.

Money Money Money :D

They all have non-compete clauses in their contracts, but these are not valid in California.

This is part of the reason why every little shit gets patented, so if someone goes to your competitor, they can't just implement the same.

I was just thinking there must a team of lawyers somewhere (exclusively?) sifting through this guy's NDAs.

In other news, talented guys gets new interesting job. I hate him :D

Edit: It's also a bit disingenuous calling him "Ryzen architect". He's done so many other revolutionary (for lack of a better word) things before Zen.

oh shit, i don't know if this a good news or bad news.

Well there's always this, I wonder if Jim will get the same response that Raja did when he jumped ship?

This is good news because it means Intel sees AMD as a threat again. I'm hoping that as a result, we see something surprising from Intel in a few years.

Not too sure if he is going to work on CPUs as Intel should have enough talented people in that department.
Maybe he joins Raja or works on some AI chip or something.

Currently AMD makes the best AI/GPGPU/crypto chip, it's called Graphics CoreNext architecture. Raja's strategy will be to make another highly parallelized SIMD architecture without breaking AMD patents.

Dammit Jim, I'm a doc...oops wrong thread. :twitch:

Don't ya love the desperation?

Ha, Im just waiting for the headline in 2 or 3 years: "Nvidia and AMD join forces to sue Intel over patent infringement"

Well, that's shit. Everyone worth anything leaving from AMD to join Intel...
