A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES went under the hammer for 660,000 dollars, which is 561,000 euros.
The amount is a record for video games. The game is not only still in its plastic case, but inside the box itself is also in good condition.

According to IGN, this amount has pulverized all older records.
At the beginning of last year, $ 360,000 was paid for the 'Nintendo Play Station', a hybrid console from the time when the two parties worked together.
The record for a video game was $ 156,000; that was paid last year for a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Remind me of the Futurama episode where Fry got 4bil usd and just spend them on nostalgia items. People who spent ludicrous amount of money for these usually are those who won the lottery or inheritance and go back to bankruptcy pretty soon LOL.

So buy a physical copy of a game and leave it in original box sealed and just keep it stored for decades. :D

Fucking ridiculous, even if i owned the earth and heavens, i would never throw such money for ancient garbage like this, with that money i can buy a super computer and emulate it at 8k 60fps

Unbelievable.
With that money, you could run it in 3D at 8K LOL

That is generally what happens with collectors.

What's sad is some human garbage self absorbed waste of skin would pay for this absurdity, i would give that money to a children charity than throw all out for futial trash like an outdated video game.

SAD
Just because you don't appreciate it does not mean no one does. Clearly. And demanding charity of the individual simply because you think it's lame, seriously? How about we just actually tax the wealthy at a fair rate and start there. They probably could still afford this.

Yeah, this is beyond funny at this point.

I was at a comic convention (I am usually too cool to go to those things but my friend drag me out to it) and they were selling old Sega Saturn, N64, NES, SNES and stuff games there for a small fortune. Most of the games and consoles I had (besides Turbo Gfx and the NEC PCFX) and so I had to call my parents to find out if they still have my old collection. No, they gave it away to charity.

Darn

I have a pre-ordered copy of Dragon Age: Origins still in its plastic wrapping. It was in its sealed shipping box until the box got damaged just last year. Guess I'll sit on it for another decade or so.

Check out this guy who thinks.

1: Mario doesn't run at 60fps
And
2: 8k looks better than native resolution on a CRT

Emulation is ok if done right, but that is not doing it right.

It's not even the first copy manufactured. Or the millionth, or any other kind of significant milestone. It's just a RANDOM original copy.

For $660K you could set up an entire game software development company and make some really cool shit. That's so much more exciting than a single copy of an old game that sits in a glass pedestal.

Don't worry there's a time machine coming to a store near you, just thinking of a Kickstarter for it ~ only $1 million USD earlybird price :p

Just because you don't appreciate it does not mean no one does.
Its an outdated video game from decades ago, that is sold for more than houses and exotic cars, paying that much for an ancient video game inst appreciating its worth, its wasting money and being scammed because its a systemic problem that we somehow all agreed thats its ok to pay a million times more MSRP just because its a rare thing lol please ....

1: Mario doesn't run at 60fps
And
2: 8k looks better than native resolution on a CRT

Emulation is ok if done right, but that is not doing it right.
For 660k you can buy the best PC in the world that will run it at all the FPS you want and hook it up to the best CRT ever made to get the "done it right" experience.
Lamo if paying sky high price for a rare video game gives a person personal fulfillment, than that person needs to reflect on his life choices and personality.

Sad

And demanding charity of the individual simply because you think it's lame, seriously?
Where did i ever demanded anything ?
All i said was if it was my money i would do better than waste it on a video game lol, as much as a hardcore gamer i am, i still would know better than pay that much just because its a rare videogame

Jesus Christ the humanity ... :(

Benchmark Scores I've actually never benched it!! Too busy with WCG and FAH and not gaming!! :( :(
And in part another lesson of why I've no sold any of my retro Amiga/Spectrum/Nintendo/Sega etc. or current PC games... I hope in time they will be worth a mint for my children... I live in hope but who knows :)

Some of the games I have currently are worth some pretty decent cash, but I'll keep hold of them since I prefer to have something rather than sell it because it's worth a few quid now... That said, personally I only buy games I wish to have rather than anything that is considered rare because the prices are crazy.. Power to whoever can spend it but then I also want to use my games, so I'd never buy something and keep it sealed.. Christ if I did that I'd need a house three times the size of what I have now (but hopefully twice the size for my next home will be enough.....)

*shrugs* Calling them human garbage was a pretty big sign you disapproved of their choices.

I think it's the only sealed copy known to exist during a certain time frame when Nintendo was using some different type of shrink wrap? Although some versions of the 1st print test market (ie New York) have had some pretty crazy numbers on them recently too.

I was a NES kid growing up. I cant afford anything remotely close to this type of thing, but I can understand the nostalgia. I still have my original NES and a few years ago started buying back a few games I really enjoyed. It's a nice little collection of a NES and 20 games that brings back some great memories

I think I can sum it up - It's just a case of "Bling-Peen" or to demonstrate how deep someone's pockets are.
Some guys with more money than common sense are like that.

It's an actual competition at auction to "Beat" the other guy because (To them) it's a matter of who's got more $$ to throw at it.... Or who's not scared to.
