Should I stay with the i7-4770k or go for the Haswell Refresh

I'm building a new computer this summer, so I was wondering... Check out my original build/thread here: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/t...-build-a-new-computer-over-the-summer.200416/

Since the new Haswell refresh is now on Newegg, which processor would you recommend me to get? If you want the Newegg link, here are all of them:
http://www.newegg.com/New-Intel-s-4...Index-_-E0-_-Intel&et_cid=7638&et_rid=9436527

I was thinking that the i7-4790 would be the best, but I'm still not sure whether or not I should just stick with the 4770k or something else.

Any ideas?

The 4790 isn't unlocked like the 4770K. So if you want easy overclocking, get the 4770K.

Stay with what you have

The refresh is going to replace the current lineup but will not offer much in terms of performance differences except in overclocking and temps. I would stick with what you have.

I kind of expected that. Considering the 4790 doesn't have much of an overclocking ability, I would rather stay with the 4770k. I could just overclock it to make up for the small amount performance possibly lost and more. Thanks for the advice guys. I appreciate it.

4790k is due in the summer dude. check out benchmarks then to help make up your mind.

Well you will want the 4790k (Devils Canyon, not out yet) if you were going to get a 4770k originally. The 4790 is the refresh of the 4770, not 4770k.

I'd do the same thing. +1 for you dude :D

Ah! I was wondering if there was going to be an unlocked version. Thank you. I'll keep that in mind when I get the money to build.

I want to thank everyone else who posted! You have my gratitude.

Get the 4790k if you don't have a 4770k already.

Oh I mis-interpreted what you meant, I thought you already owned the 4770k. If your buying a new system, definitely wait for the unlocked devils canyon i7 as you will get much better overclocking performance off of it. You just won't really notice a difference clock to clock, it will all be in temps and overclocking levels.

Yeah. The fact that the base clock speed is at 4 Ghz makes it awesome. Do you know if it'll cost more than the 4770k or will it be similar?

My guess is about the same with maybe a 10-20 dollar difference (Just a rough guess from what ive heard). Intel is really not one to drop the price of anything so they will probably just add this to the lineup with a slight price hike. Of course on a new system if the rumors and what has been seen so far turn out to be true, then it will be way more than worth it for the overclocker. I still remember seeing Sandy-Bridge chips hitting 5ghz and loving it!

I hope 4790K can do 5Ghz stable on air every chip :D

I'm really looking forward to this, considering this is my first build, this is exciting.

I heard it can with the included cooler. They have a better thermal paste. However, I'd buy an aftermarket cooler to help mitigate the extra heat that it might produce.

You heard where?

All I saw was Expreview speaking out of his azz that it will be capable of 5ghz air.
I bet 4.6 -4.8ghz will be more possible.

btw get at least 2133mhz CL9 ram, 1600mhz will limit it in certain scenarios, not showing its full potential.

Do you know a good pair of 8GB sticks that cost roughly the same? I don't mind a $10-$20 dollar difference, but anything more might drive me off.

Just remember to factor in the cost of a new motherboard when considering this upgrade - Z87 boards cannot run Haswell refresh CPUs, only Z97 boards will work with them, but Z97 will also run Broadwell CPUs when they come out, so at least it's not a "one-shot-wonder" like Z87. Apparently 4 pins in the 1150 socket are different for Z97, making them incompatible with original Haswell CPUs. The 4790K should be out June 2nd, along with a boatload of new Z97 boards, so it's worth the wait for 2 or 3 weeks to finally get a CPU that overclocks past 4.5 without melting down.

wrong Z87 will support it, Intel ME firmware bios update. My z87-delux already supports it if I wanted to buy 4790k.

Broadwell too by the looks of it, same procedure with IMEI firmware update.

pay attention what this Intel CEO/Rep says and this was back in September 2013 no sign of z97 yet.

Broadwell is going to enable 2 types of devices; "One you can plug the chip directly into existing systems (z87, etc) and Second we will brand new systems (z97, etc).."

i hope intel do not cripple them like ivy and haswell again :(

might get 6 with water then :D

Agreed, I hope they stop with the whole cheap out on the TIM from this point forward because if we are paying that much for a CPU it should not be limited because of a poor quality thermal compound.

If all these chips hit 5ghz on air, I will be shocked to be honest!

I heard that this new refresh will include better thermal compound and better heat management, so it could be possible. I don't know if it'll work using the stock cooler... dunno.
