hey, my computer starts going super slow when i start it up I think i know why there is this program( dont know what it is ) that every time i start it up it takes along time to pop up then after it is up and i close it it starts going slow. I have scaned for virus but nothing I have dont disk conif and nothing. Can someone help me with it thanks

untitled.JPG I was tying to past the screen shot here but it wouldnt work but thats a screen shot of the program that pops up its the one with "0005" name on it

are you on dial up ? thats for a 56k modem and the lucent modems are shiite imo, if your not on dial up just go to device manager and remove that pos modem lol

if you need your (crap *cough :p ) lucent modem, then just go into the control panel and there should be an icon there such as "modem settings" etc left there by the software for it, you should be able to configure it from there.

Or you can go to msconfig and uncheck the proggie that's giving you trouble (look for "0005").

you have norton thats why its slow

ditch norton, its a system resource hog. get avg/avast/bitdefender/etc... plus use smitrem and smitfraudfix to check if there is any background spyware infections. try atf cleaner before you do that though, seems to pick up some files ccleaner leave behind.

where can i find device manager?

After you are done with that i highly recommend the Tweakguide for XP found here: http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html
There are some nice easy tweaks in that guide that can speed up your booting times also.

do i have to dl that 175 page thing?

what virus scanner do you guys recommend?

avg, avast!, bitdefender, or one that i might every actually think of buying is trend micro or kaspersky.

Nod32 if you want to pay...

where can i find device manager?
Contol Panel> System> Hardware> Device Manager

(This is if you are in classic mode in the control panel)

Or right click on "My Computer", click "Manage", click "Device Manager"

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Ultimate Fix.

...by "Ultimate Fix", I mean "Reformat and Reinstall". Sure you have to back everything up, but I can promise you won't have software related problems (until you start installing things, that is).

If you're not going to reinstall Windows, I'd definitely check for spyware and viruses. Try AVG Free for Viruses. Try AdAware for Spyware.

The old "Reformat and Reinstall" is a method overused and should only be for last resort. Also, there is no guarantee that it will fix everything, as there are boot sector virus that won't be touched by the reformat, and I can imagine that it's possible something could reside in the partition table as well.

Not to knock TPU, but there are lots of forums I've seen that cater to actual virus infections. They often are more prepared and more experienced to help with these situations. You'll need things like SmitRem, HijackThis and other software tools to help you diagnose the problem more specificly. Also, I think it's GeekstoGo.com that has a site with "what is this process" where you can search for program names and find out what they do.
