I was thinking of buying 16GB of ram for my dedicated server but came across this
OCZ Solid 3 SLD3-25SAT3-60G 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC

The dedicated server partly runs on ram ( 4GB ) by making a ramdisk which is automatically started and formated with the required files from a file image on it and with 16GB of ram i can fit 2/3 (I2GB ) of the required files on it.

So do you think the SSD be a better option ?. The extra space after 17GB is not required btw.

And is the said SSD any good ?. And yes it will be on a SATA 3 connection.

Thank You, please if you got the time please post why you think one over the other.

I am leaning more to the SSD ATM to be honest

i can tell you that ssd is pretty good for the money and the advertised read write was achievable, i built a friends pc with one ,he was ecstatic but for your use imho the ram + ram cache would be quicker

i would stick with ram since its many many many times faster...... if you dont need more then 12 gb of space..

what type of server is it?

in saying that, a ssd is likely to be fast enough for your needs.

Just a Arma 2 game server, but thinking more about it what i could do is to get the SSD and put the game on it and still use a ramdrive too that way i should reap the best possible performance.

Go with both. Check out Buy.com; I saw a Kingston 64GB SSD on there earlier for $65 then also purchase a copy of Supercache.

I don't see were it says you get that software with it. And how well doe sit really work anyways ?.

Why not install the SSD alongside the RAM disk setup, and use it for storing files and use RAM for caching. Win Win.

Ram disk + ram supercache on a SSD?

get the SSD first, and the ram later, when possible... how much does the server use when under full load, and not installed on the ram?

It really does depend what you are going to use this server for, now, and in the future. If a dedicated games server, RAM up to the recommended RAM for the games server. What use is the SSD? How exactly would a SSD help a dedicated games server? You need to hold the runtime, the map and the pointers in RAM. Any pagefiling is a disaster. Not enough RAM would mean pagefile hits. Doesnt matter if it is a SSD, you dont want them.

As for loading the runtime? Well, it is a dedicated server 24/7 so it only loads once. SSD doesnt help here.

As for loading maps? Yes the SSD will be faster than HDD, but all clients need to load the maps, and the lowest common denominator is the server waiting for all the clients to be ready. I dont see how the SSD will help the overall experience of all players.

More RAM however would help reduce any server/pagefile lags and stutters and therefore reduce ping spikes due to this activity.

To speed up map loads, create a RAMDISK and point all temps there. See if your game allows the server to "pre-unzip" all game assets. Defrag. If you really want to, move the whole game directory onto the RAMDISK. That's the fastest it will blow.

Well maybe when there is 15+ 30 even your talking some ram usage. but with the arma server every other file is a compressed file . And as far as i can tell it assesses a lot of large compressed files ( mostly 100+MB and a fair few 200MB+ -300MB+.

Well ended up getting the SSD i said with 8GB ( Ripjaws ) of ram i should be able at least run the ram at 1333 with one set that's already in the system.

Will have to pick another set up at a later time as my current ram voltage is 1.65 @ 1600 were this ram is 1.5v.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 ...
