Not always. You can be sensible about it and flash a rom from the database here, and get a feature you lack from a board that uses the same PCB. It's risky but if you backup your old bios not THAT risky.

My HIS card in my profile is flashed with a gigabyte bios that uses the same ref PCB, and it gained me UEFI GOP on a card that otherwise would not have it.

I do agree most people are flashing for bad reasons though. Do your homework.

When manufacturer releases new bios for their graphics card, that's the only time I flash it because it's usually to fix issues

I only see one in the "Recent discussions" pane but there has been a lot regardless.

One thing to keep in mind is there is a bios switch, and the ability to backup your bios. This basically means even if you don't back it up, you're going to be ok unless you are a complete moron and flashed something really different and/or flashed both for some strange reason (AND did not make a backup).

But seriously, people only ought to flash BIOS when they know what they're doing. Loading custom ROM's on certain cards for specific reasons *ahem* Nvidia power limit shite *ahem* make for very great fun. It's those that flash different model BIOS onto the wrong chip that make the most noise.

Yeah, people who seem to think they can magically make their R9 280X an R9 290X by a bios flash are just doomed to be noisy when they try... It's simply the law of physics at that point.

Put the card in a second PCI-E slot and re-flash it with the original bios that you saved before you got started on your flashing adventure.
Problem solved.

TPU has a great selection of bios files in case you forgot to save the original.

There is no "everybody makes mistakes or everybody needs to start some-ware" argument here
no this is just stupid users being stupid
every-single guide on the internet tells you to make a backup,if you can't follow simple instruction then you should not be allowed any-ware near a rom flashing utility

It's sad and unfortunate but I think we should cut a little slack to those who have less knowledge than us, some IT illiterate individuals who have issues just google, find a thread on a site that says that someone somewhere sorted a problem by flashing another Bios and hey presto without even knowing if the problem was related to theirs they pull the trigger, yes it's very stupid but I am sure that many of us in our early days can remember ourselves in stupid situations, perhaps not with crap ill informed Bios flashes but something we were not too proud of at the time........ I just wish they would go somewhere half decent and ask first.

I haven't flashed a gfx bios in awhile but I remember accidentally flashing the wrong bios on both sides of the switch on my old 6950 LOL....good times....

I figured out how to fix it without help by installing it in the second slot and using another card....after I flashed my backup card with the bios for the 6950...LOL

I then got out an ancient HD2600 and finally got it right...
