Technical Issues - TPU Main Site & Forum (2021)

Status
Not open for further replies.
I've noticed over the last month or two that pictures are loading very slowly in the threads I like to frequent. Is it just me?

My download/upload speeds are excellent and I'm not having any issues on other sites. I've tried several different browsers all to the same effect. LibreWolf(desktop) is probably the best, but Firefox, Brave, and Waterfox have all been slow.

Any ideas?

Best,

Liquid Cool
Same thing here !

Must... not... report... W1zz... for FB posting.... (sorry viper. i tried to resist)

TPU has been solid for me since i got rid of easylist, to stay on topic. no outages in the Au time zone.

Thanks for the comment Mussels...

I've never taken the time to delve into ublock origin, I just know it works. Although, I'd imagine they're using easylist? I'll turn off ublock for Techpowerup and see if picture loading improves.

Don't know why I have it on to begin with other than I leave it on for every site. It's a matter of habit( or laziness).

Best,

Liquid Cool

Edit: Turned off Ublock Origin. Tested three pages on the "What are you playing" Thread. The pages load instantaneously, but the pictures load extremely slow. Probably takes almost two minutes to load the pictures. Currently using Edge on my tablet. Will test my desktop as well. Every other site I visit...not a single issue with Ublock on or off.

Edit 2: Desktop is the same...

Ublock origin (and many others) use multiple lists, go into its settings and update, or even remove easylist if you have issues.

I also see slow image loading but it's always been that way for me, for some reason (distance?)

W1zzard...

I'm not sure how to capture the links of these pictures in a thread. I'll give you an example, that's the best I can do. :)

The "What are you playing?" thread. Post # 13,643. RTWJunkie has four images in that post. It takes well over a minute for them to load. About a 1/4 of an inch at a time.

For convenience...here is the page RTWJunkie's images are on:

What are you playing? - Page 546

I cleared my cache in the browser after turning off ublock origin and then rebooted. The small pictures as well as the large are loading very slowly. So...every picture is loading as s-l-o-w as molasses. I didn't start experiencing this until I came back to the forum. I got out of the hospital at the end of April...so...I'm thinking May or June is when it started happening.

If I go to this thread at [H](below) as an example of a thread with quite a few pictures. The moment I enter into the thread on page 21, the pictures are already loaded and I can scroll to the end with every picture viewable. To load the complete page with pictures, it's instantaneous. Maybe 1 second at most.

The OFFICIAL post pics of your SFF thread...page 21

TPU is pulling up as fast as it always has, which, from my perspective is pretty fast. Same with all of the forums/threads.

It's just the pictures. The load times almost feel like the old dial up days...:).

I can't believe I could be the only one experiencing this problem. My setup is very basic and usually very functional. I'm a minimalist in that regard.

Best,

Liquid Cool

P.S. Thanks for the comments Mussels. I'm just going to leave ublock completely turned off for TPU. The only site I really need ublock for is youtube.

^ My experience matches liquid cools. That [H] link opened, and i saw all the images immediately

TPU threads it's like on dial up, they load in slowly over time - but usally on the second load they're cached and instant

I'm not having this issue. Images load up about the same speed regardless of the site I visit, TPU included. Snappy & fast.

This sounds eerily familiar....:). Three people are experiencing this issue, somehow...I no longer feel alone.

LLM,

Browser? Add-ons? OS?

I think what you are seeing is the lazy loading in action. It will not load images until you scroll closer to them. This helps reduce page load time, makes the page responsive faster, which helps with Google ranking. You can disable the image lazy loading features in your user settings. Does that give the expected result?

W1z...

I have to admit...I've never heard about "lazy loading"...but I turned it off. Still the same for me. Here is a quick print screen when I attempt to load page 545.

seriously...slow.jpg

Like I said...about a 1/4 of an inch at a time. I've just been putting up with it, but in image heavy threads...a little patience is required.

I guess I should also mention...the image like I just uploaded here into this post? When I click on it, I see nothing but a spinning circle for 30 to 40 seconds. It used to be instantaneous.

Hi,
A big help with this is if you took away the option to insert full image this is what kills loading

Just make everything thumbnail then you could trash bin lazy image loading
If anyone wants to see a larger image they can open it.

Even if copy and pasting default that to thumbnail.

One other option is add an auto spoiler for any post exceeding a point
There are some long winded people inserting full image after full image....

Agreed, not having any issues here at all.

Here is my desktop on a fresh Windows 10 install.

and here is my tablet also on a fresh install.

Tablet tracert fresh install - October 5, 2021.jpg

I ran three instances on each system...what you're view in these images is about the average across all three runs.

I will reiterate...other than images...my experience is the same as LLM's. Snappy & Fast. TPU has always been fast to load since I started coming here(at the request of T_Ski) in late 2010.

Thanks for that, pages with lots of images are loading much faster now.

P4-630...

You should be so fortunate..:).

After turning off lazy loading, clearing my cache and rebooting. The load times are almost twice as long as they were.

almost refusing to load.jpg

Yes, I know it sounds nuts...:). The above image is from page 544 in the "What are you playing?" thread. The snapshot is after 30 seconds.

I've gone to every website I frequent and since I've been on the web from the command line days(1991)....that's a lot of sites.

This is the only one I'm having an issue with.

I don't mind putting up with it...just thought I'd mention it.

Hi,
You check your internet speed lately ?

I have Cox, who laid a new cable from their corporate headquarters 1/2 a mile away directly to the junction box up the street and then from there to my home two years ago. Haven't had a single drop off...well, as long as I can remember. No issues streaming multiple movies at the same time, online FPS gaming, Ooma etc. My service has been stellar.

Again...I'll mention...I only have this issue with TechPowerUP! No other site. I'll also repeat...I was in the hospital from late March to early May. When I left, there were no issues with loading images and when I returned home there were. No changes were performed on my systems in the interim...no one was here to do so. :)

I only pointed this out if there are several people with this problem, somebody needed to say something so W1z would know.

I don't mind just putting up with it, after all this time it doesn't bother me that much...

Best,

Liquid Cool
