I don't have Nvidia so I can't speak to if this happens with their cards or not. I have had Display Port monitors for a few years now. I currently run an Acer 49" 4K monitor as my main (I just love how DIsplay Port looks on screen). I was playing a game the other day (this is not the first time it has happened) and it it was running through DIsplay Port. The game was going good and all of a sudden no picture but the sound is on and the Keyboard and mouse are functioning. I try a hard reset and still nothing. What I used to do was hook my PC up to my TV via HDMI and everything would be great. I tried something a little different, I ran the HDMI into the monitor and used PIP to see the DIsplay port channel. Sure enough the computer booted with HDMI and DIsplay Port showing the boot and getting into WIndows. I cancelled out of PIP and kept it on HDMI. I had the computer on from Friday to this morning only turning it off for a couple hours on Saturday. It has been rock solid.

I wish I could say that it is my monitor or GPU but every monitor I have had from QNIX, LG and now Acer exhibit the same anomoly. Is anyone else having the same experience with DIsplay Port?

Dp cables are susceptible to drop out via exceeded bandwidth , are also easier to degrade and get a bad one on arrival than hdmi , get a good one and like me you might have no issues.
Though its not as reliable or durable as hdmi it's issues can be overcome.
And it's not brand aware I've seen issues with Dp on Nvidia and Amd cards , sometimes the connection on the tv/monitor is sub par.

I have had this problem with multiple Display Port cables and I gave up. I bought a couple cables and they all blink. A lot of the cables seem to be generic and possibly not up to the standard. It is a frustrating thing to deal with.
My monitors are 1440P and only 60Hz so I run one on DVI and the other on HDMI. I am fortunate the HDMI cable I have outputs 1440P and that both of these options are 60Hz, however if I upgraded to a higher resolution or more refresh rate monitor setup, I would need to use display port.

Did you try another DP cable ?

I have currently 6 DP cables ranging from 1.1 to 1.4 and costing from $10 to $45. They all exhibit the same behaviour.

Based on that could it be my Vega 64 crossfire array sending too much data through the DP port for 4K gaming? I do have some really good cables too.

Try using frame limiter see it keeping it to 60 helps.

Thanks for the tip. It kinda sucks capping to 60 but I get what you are proposing.
Totally understand the frustration. Also, you have an AMD card. I have an Nvidia and the same thing happens. Display Port is an unfortunate standard. I think problems with it are fairly common. Most of the negative reviews on cables are related to blinking. Like you, I bought a bunch of cables. Google searches reveal unresolved forum threads complaining about blinking cables. I am hoping that the next standard will be more robust.

I know I wish they would iron out the issues before updating the standard too.

As I have quite a few monitors that are 1920x1080 60Hz with DVI ports, I really like having dual DVI ports on videocards but right now even that is difficult to find. HDMI is a pain because the monitor gives you an eye-searing BLUE screen. For the next productivity machine I build, I might look around for a good deal on an Asus ROG Strix 1050ti as it has two DVI.

Nice I wistfully look at my QNIX 2710 1440P that used DVI. First time my monitor looked like the images in Gaming magazines.

Recently VESA has experienced quite a few complaints regarding troublesome DisplayPort operation that ended up being caused by improperly made DisplayPort cables. These “bad” DisplayPort cables are generally limited to non-DisplayPort certified cables, or off-brand cables. To further investigate this trend in the DisplayPort cable market, VESA purchased a number of non-certified, off-brand cables and found that an alarmingly high number of these were configured improperly and would likely not support all system configurations. None of these cables would have passed the DisplayPort certification test, moreover some of these cables could potentially damage a PC, laptop, or monitor. We have not seen problems with the cables supplied by major computer brands, or major computer accessory brands, nor have we seen any problems with any of the cables that have been DisplayPort certified.
StarTech (HBR3), Accell (HBR3), Belkin, L-com, EIZO, ELECOM (HBR3), Amphenol, Molex, Insignia, Fullink, JCE, Idel Versandhandel (HBR3), Club 3D (HBR3), are the only manufacturers that have certified any cables.

If I were looking to buy a problem-free cable, I would buy a StarTech HBR3 certified cable:
5 meter: DP14MM5M
3 meter: DP14MM3M
2 meter: DP14MM2M
1 meter: DP14MM1M

I am hoping that the next standard will be more robust.
Not likely. The push for higher bandwidth and smaller cables means the days of reliable cables like DVI are gone.

So based on a few observations, you lot are saying the DP standard is shit? What an interesting conclusion to make...
It's a far superior standard to HDMI in every single way.
What seems to be the issue, is not graphics cards, nor cables, but rather the monitor manufacturers cutting a few too many corners on their display controller boards.
I had an AOC 4K monitor that I had nothing but issues with, tried different cables, different cards, nothing solved it. A friend of mine had the same display and the same issues.
Again, this is only obeservational, although from what I could find online, we weren't the only ones with issues using this specific model.
Having owned both a Dell and an Asus monitor, I have had exactly zero issues with DP. In fact, DP is the only viable option on my Asus, as it only does 24p at 4K over HDMI.
So instead of blaming the standard, maybe have a look at other people with the same displays to see if it's a display maker/model issue instead.
Considering that millions of computers are using DP, if it was a fault with the standard, you'd see much more complaints about it.

never had a problem with the Startech DP cable I have so yeah have to agree there they are good but not overly expensive either

Running dual upper end Asus business series monitors PB258Q and they blink when on display port. They werent cheap monitors and they are Asus brand. I also think HDMI sucks but DVI was flawlessly reliable. I think that you are looking for a fight here from us and its an unreasonable one. I won't take your troll bait. All I will say is we should have cables and monitors that work properly. That is the purpose of having a standard.

And it clearly does for 99.99% of people. If not, people would be complaining all over the internet and I simply don't see this.
I guess it could be certain combinations of graphics cards and monitors that don't work well together, but it's more to it than just "bad cables" or a "bad standard" at this point, as we're at DP 1.4.
You have to consider that there are a lot of manufacturers of LCD drivers as well and these are ICs that could have all sorts of issues. Unfortunately, LCD screens don't tend of have user upgradable firmwares.
In the case of my AOC screen, it was sent back to AOC and they claimed to have updated the firmware, but it had the same issues. In that case, it was not just "blinking" but rather half of the screen would go garbled at times, part of the edge would go garbled, the built in speakers would start screeching or it would just power off at random, at which case you had to pull out the power cable for 30 seconds or so for it to power on again.

When it comes to PC hardware, there are far too many combinations of parts that can lead to a problem for anyone to blame it on a standard.

The standards aren't the problem, it's the lack of compliance with them. DisplayPort has a higher rate of non-compliant cables than HDMI does because it's much more complicated as far as the cables are concerned. HDMI is fundamentally just glorified single-link DVI which has been around since the 1990s. DisplayPort is a truly new standard from the ground up and a lot of manufacturers got implementation wrong.

Try this out. Been there, done that too.

Blinking huh. I recognize this. My Eizo FG2421 also blinks every once in a while - it loses image and then picks up DP again by itself a second later and all is fine. But its not by far often enough to worry about here... like twice a week (over 30 hours operation).

Never knew this could be a DP thing.

There is simply a load dud, crap cables. Even the ones that come with Dell monitors are actually fakes and drop out. They got scammed. There was also problem with power pin. Everyone did not read the VESA specs and routed it, it needed to be left unconnected. Asus, LG also fell for it, prolly same cheap china oem.

Just get a trusted, certified cable. No noname crap.

I had this problem with a previous LG 4K monitor: It would lose connection to the system occasionally. It became very picky on DisplayPort cables, it would no longer work with the one it came with. I got certified cables, and it worked fine for a while, but over time it became worse, and eventually would lose connection ever more and more often, regardless of cable quality and length. Eventually it failed (I am guessing the DisplayPort PHY died), and this might be the same thing that is happening to you. LG no longer had them in stock, so they mailed me a check for the purchase price and I got my 5K HP Z27q instead, so that was a win in the end.

I've never had these issues on other 4K monitors or TVs I've owned.

What you need is a VESA-certified DP cable: https://www.displayport.org/product-category/cables-adaptors/

Don't assume the cable that came with your display is complaint. Very few are actually certified.

I recommend you find a cable certified for 8K, and only use as much length as you need. Something like the Club3D (sorry can't link the DP.org site is crashing) certified for 8K totally solved my video dropping problem on my Vega 56 connected to a 4K display. The Club3D 8K cable was only $25 CAD, which is closer to $17 USD. Be wary of counterfeit Club3D cables and try to source from reputable retailer (ie. not Amazon).

Thanks for the reply I will look for some of those cables you mentioned.

ive seen the issues before with a nvidia card that was fixed with newer drivers. i dont know about AMD tho, sorry i feel your pain. I cant wait for hdmi 2.1 to come out seems like its taking forever ;( most tv's dont even use displayport so stuck with using adapters and bs. Very good hugsnotdrugs club3d 8k dp cable sounds like the perfect solution.
