Japanese tech company Hitachi has developed the fastest elevator in the world.

The ultra high-speed elevator reached a speed of 1,260 meters (4,133 feet) per minute, or 75 kilometers (47 miles) per hour.

The record-breaking speed was recorded during a test of the elevator at the CTF Finance Center, a 530-meter (1739 feet) tall skyscraper in the city of Guangzhou, China.

In May, the elevator reached a top speed of 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) per minute, or 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) per hour as its rated speed, and the elevator is now in its final adjustment phase.

Hitachi says it's pursuing even higher speeds, modified control units and safety devices of the elevator.
The achievement is recorded by National Elevator Quality Supervision and Inspection, a public accreditation body of elevators.

But because the test was conducted for technology development of Hitachi elevators, the elevator in Guangzhou will only run at its rated speed of 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) per hour when it's in service.

Hitachi claims that the high-speed elevator maintains safety via features such as active guide rollers installed in the four corners (top and bottom, left and right) of the elevator car.

These rollers absorb vibrations when the elevator is traveling at high speed.

The elevator also has ear pressure adjustment technology to ease ear blockage by reducing the changes in air pressure inside the elevator car.

Its brake equipment is made of heat resistant materials, and the elevator's descending speed is 600 meters (1,968 feet) per minute, or 36 kilometers (22.4 miles) per hour.

Does it have airbags?

I have had a good hunt around but i cant find any pictures of the actual elevator.......I'm wondering if it has seats.

Has anyone ridden it? If it's too fast, it will make people sick, some can even pass out. Elevators aren't restricted by their mechanics as much as their passengers.

That's so fast I'll bet it's got an aerodynamic shape to reduce drag and vibration. I wonder what the g-forces feel like inside it. I also wonder how safe it is long term as poor maintenance could lead to disaster with a lift this fast as could random failure.

Features of Elevator with Speed of 1,260 m/min

1. Drive and control technologies to attain the speed of 1,260 m/min
- Permanent magnet synchronous motor to achieve both its thinner profile and higher output power
- Compact traction machine realized by adopting main ropes with higher strength and lighter weight
- Space-saving control unit with inverters that possesses one of the world's highest capacities(2) for elevators

2. Safety features supporting ultra-high-speed elevator operation
- Brake equipment using materials with outstanding heat resistance
- Both safety and space-saving achieved by a single governor that can correspond to different rated speeds for ascending and descending(3)

3.Comfort and safety for even longer travel height
- Active guide rollers installed in the four corners (top and bottom, left and right) of elevator car to absorb vibration during high speed operation
- Hitachi's original air pressure adjustment technology to ease ear blockage by reducing the changes in air pressure inside elevator car

Elevators... I get such an uneasy feeling in them. Very disorienting.

Sir Isaac Newton says that it's all about acceleration (and deceleration), for people not to pass out it needs to take its sweet time to reach the top speed of 72 km/h ... I suppose the top speed is achieved only if all people in the elevator are going to the same floor and there is enough stories in between.

It could be an express elevator from bottom to top with no intermediary stops. Other elevator shafts hit the floors in between.

All fast elevators make my stomach feel like it's in my chest or my pelvis. I don't think this building is tall enough to completely mitigate that.

Elevators are so cool. This is amazing. They could charge people just for riding it. I really want to visit a proper scyscraper some day just to look around.

Its the Lift muzik :)
wear headphones and use an Mp3 player
next thing they will fit Advert Display Screens on all walls and ceiling just to Advertise ( Google Ads of Course )to their "Captive Audience"
Cant close your eyes to avoid then as you might miss your floor :)
Gotta love Big City Progress :)

It would be pretty uncomfortable if it reached top speed and stopped at every floor.

It had better have smooth acceleration, or people like me with bad backs could sue them for the compression caused by the G-forces.

cool. I want to ride it :D

I've been on this, and no sickness there. It's not the same, I just wanted y'all to know, in regards to acceleration. Front row too!

Anyway yeah I am assuming this goes from the bottom to near the top. I also assume these buildings have a few elevators with only two stops. It wouldn't make sense to have every elevator stopping on every floor, not if you want to shuffle around people effeciently.

Forward/backward acceleration is very different from up and down. Namely, if you experience too much acceleration, especially going up, you can pass out from the brain being deprived of oxygen.

Article talks about velocity a lot but it doesn't talk about acceleration. As BiggieShady said, it's really the acceleration (and deceleration) that is the chief concern.
