Thermal throtiling causing my game to stutter

I recently have cleaned and apllied new thermal paste to my laptop, and went to test the performance and temps. I noticed that when i played my game would switch between 50 fps down to 10 and back to 50. i saw that my temps would also go from 61 to 85 degrees celsius. The temperature on my gpu was consitenly 71 degrees and gave a consistent output, whilst my cpu would flucuate between 20 to 70% utilization.

The specs on my laptop are:
GTX 1660 TI
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
16 GB ram
1 TB storage

Have you got pet's.

Sounds like you have furballs in your heatsink, I would start with a clean out.

Then re tim, well tbh I would re apply thermal paste anyway with a good one but at least would clean it out first.

I second MrK. Clean out the heatsinks/fans and repaste again, this time making sure the heatsink is flat against the die and the mounting pressure is consistent. The temp jumping from 61 to 85 and then back down again indicates there may be a problem with the way the heatsink is mounted against the die.

I just cleaned the heatsink and fans and made sure the heat sink was flat against the die. im still seeing no difference

What's the model # of your laptop? If the heatsink itself isn't that beefy these temps might just be normal. Were you seeing lower temperatures in the past? Additionally, it's normal to see some fluctuation in CPU usage during games as the work performed on the CPU isn't as consistent as the work performed on the GPU in a game.

What in the last 50 minutes?!.

Or before you posted, if so, has anything else been done.

And what software utilities are running.

Did you edit the OP or am I going opticians tomorrow?!.

Might be worth trying the re tim again because if it's clean and done right it shouldn't be worse or behave like that.

my laptop is a komplett khameleon p9. my temps where conistent in th past, but im seeing extreme fluctuations now

i have basically spent almost all my free time trying to fix my issues, so i have done a lot of stuff that people have recomended. Im trying to get it fixed because my friend is gonna have a lan party, also what does re tim mean?

Gotcha, that looks like a fairly slim laptop so the cooling is never going to be phenomenal, but the fact that you said it was consistent before the repaste leads me to believe that something happened during the repaste process that is making the heatsink less capable of moving heat effectively. By any chance did you bend the heatpipes at all? Even a little bit? Bending a flat heatpipe like the ones in laptops has a good chance of pinching off the hollow inside and rendering the heatpipe pretty much useless. Just trying to exhaust all possibilities of why you're seeing these inconsistent temps now.

im not really sure man, im gonna go to bed and see if i got any time to fix this. i really hope its not broken cause this is my first pc ever

Re tim means renewing the thermal paste on your CPU and GPU.

In itself not the easiest or hardest job but I recommend looking for a disassembly video for your specific laptop if in doubt after that take it to a shop.

But in general if it's running like you say, it doesn't sound permanently broken though sub optimal at the moment.

Good luck and don't forget to let us know how it goes.

i think i found the issue, its my fans. I realise that my fans are barely moving when playing games. i remeber when i first got my laptop the fans would move very fast.

Yeah that'll definitely have a negative effect on temps, are you able to edit the fan curve at all? If you've updated the BIOS since you've first bought the system there could have been a change that was made to the fan ramp threshold.

yeah because before i would feel the hot air being pushed out when i put my had my hand near the vents, but i dont even feel anything being pushed out. i havent updated the bios at all tho

Well, if they are moving that's got to be a fan curve thing.
If they are not, well I would look into if they're plugged in, that's if you had to remove it to clean as I assume you have.
Or that when cleaning, a clump of fur might have been pushed further into the fan perhaps.

Also possible to get a wire or something else slightly rubbing against the fan.

i dont have any pets, and the fans are moving i just dont know how to increse their speed. they do make some noise, but i dont feel the hot air being pushed out so maybe i have to clear the vents and clean the fans. im gonna do that and see if it fixes anything

Look what I found in my fans. I pulled the dust off and it was litteraly 1 cm thick

You told me you had already cleaned the heatsink/fans!

Yeah that should definitely fix the issue though, give us a report back on what your temps are after the dust removal

This is what the graphics says and the gameplay is still stuttery

You realise that I am being polite now replying to you.

Take it to a shop or an Adult who knows what he is doing with laptops.

there are no shops in my area, cant drive either because it has been snowing for three days straight. I dont know any adults who are good with computers, the only one is a relative living in a differnt country. i have very limited options. i could try to get it fixed when the snow gets moved. I really aprecitate everyone taking some time off their day to help

Huh. I've actually seen something similar to this before with an old GTX 580 I was benchmarking a while back. I had to go into Nvidia control panel and set the Power Management Mode to "Prefer Maximum Performance".

Might be worth a shot since it looks like the GPU is bouncing from the minimum power level to the maximum power level.

ok after setting it to prefer maximum performance i cant really see no difference.
