The discussion at Serve The Home is continuing. Some very specific info. there on overclocking Dell workstations. They're looking at the 7820 and 5820 series.
They're listing some software for doing this, and some settings. They report that it looks possible to them.

I've mentioned the Nvidia tesla P100 GPU a few places. There is one thing that needs to be understood about this card. It was sold as a math processor for use in servers. Servers don't have Video cards, or VGA power cables on their PSUs. So the Tesla 8 pin connector is not an 8 pin GPU connector. It's an EPS 8 pin CPU connector. There are adapters for it to use a couple of VGA connector to 8 pin EPS.
I have a xeon phi card here I'll give you if you want to play with it.

60 core 240 threads. At a screaming 1.2GHz........ Everything I have no use for and then some.

Not in public places it's not and it is only on private property YOU own and then only AFTER you have asked for the camera to be shut off and any recording deleted. But I digress...
There are some "expectation of privacy" caveats also. Audio is treated differently than video I believe (at least where I live). It can vary from state to state

I've noticed some interest by younger guys (college aged)in older overclocks. Especially 15 year old Dell computers hitting 4GHz. One of them wants to see how it's done.
I have some parts for this. So Tape Mods, Pencil Mods, SetFSB, and TS overclocking are all on the menu. Some of this will be new to me also.
One project will be a Dell WG864 motherboard with fresh capacitors installed. 4 phase VRM with Netburst roots lets it hit 4GHz on 65nm Silicon. Dimension E520/9200 and XPS 410 used this.
PLL is locked down at 266fsb. So TS for the QX6800 SLACP CPU. It's gone 4 before. I want to text edit TS for 2 core overclock since the instruction set only supports vintage single thread games.
I've got much better cooling than I had before. What I want to try is a pencil mod for the RAM from 1.8V. to 2.0V. so I can run some Crucial Ballistix 4-4-4-12 memory. 4x2GB DDR2-800. Is this within reach of a pencil mod or should I go hardmod from the start. Pencil and tapemods just have a retro vibe that seems to be of interest again.
The other experiment will be an Optiplex XE Desktop (Extreme Ennvironment). This was an industrial strength version used for airport signage, 24V. USB scanners, billboards etc. 4 phase VRM, solid copper heatsink ( for freezing and high ambient situations), BTX cooling layout. They offered a snorkel kit to pipe air to it if needed. Up to 16GB DDR3. The E7500 tapemod to 3.67GHz is too easy. So I bought a box of 8- E7600 that may need a pencil Vmod to hit their 3.83GHz tapemod speed. Anything beyond that will be SetFSB which I never had much luck with but maybe the younger geeks can help me with that. The fun part will be lifting out the back wall of the DT case and installing Dells sidewinder full height GPU bracket. I may "underclock" with TS to 3.67GHz to start and see if any of them can go full speed as is.
I've test fit a Zotac GTX 1050Ti 4GBMini, and a bracket modded MSI GTX1060 3GBOCV1 in there. But airflow is just about non existent. Running an ATX PSU as a wall wart outside the case should solve that. I already have a 12v regulator wired into the extra 24V. rail for a 75W GPU cable if needed. The 75W 1050Ti might work OK in there.
If anybody has any experience with VRM pencil mods please speak up. I know this was usually a GPU thing, but Dell BIOS has nothing for overvolting.

Here is a Vmod cell phone app. to provide a target resitance for Vmods.

If you tell me who made the bios I might be able to help. If ami I just need to know the aptio version. If it's phoenix I know there's stuff out there but I'd have to do some research .

Hey I'm going to post in here even though it's a laptop lol. So I got a Dell e6540 with an i7-4610m. It has a partially unlocked multiplier and can go 4.0ghz all core 4.1 single core. But as much as I've pissed around with TS in the past...I'm getting basically a frozen windows after going to strong with the settings. I'm on my second time using a restore point to bring it back. I don't have anything auto starting or saved or voltages being saved. Any idea what's going on here?

I will say they left this laptop more open. No workarounds. Overclocking works fine. Powercut works easy. Saves time just getting rid of pl1 and pl2 limits. Temps skyrocket and I eventually hit edp current limits. Have to look into why the fan won't go full rpm. It will do a full spool on post or bios test but will hit 97c and sounds like it's half rpm. But I somehow ruined my windows install last night. 4th or 5th time I had to do a windows restore the restore points won't work anymore lol.

I'm just playing with this. I'm not going to run an overclock. But I want a quad core i7 in it with 32gb of ram so I can run proxmox with XP,win7 32 and 64 , win10 and Ubuntu.

TS came out of laptop undervolting to start with. The OC stuff got buried in the laptop threads, and ignored in the major OC forums. So I started this dedicated thread. So even though it's laptop TS overclocking it works here. it got mentioned in the laptop threads but lost in the thousands of pages of UV stuff.

Well ultimately the cooling isn't all that great in this thing. Even if I sort out the fan. My guess is with a quad core installed I'll have to actually use TS for its intended purpose and UV it to make the CPU usable.
Was more or less curious on the windows corruption while doing this. Like I said first I've experienced this.

I think desktops are better candidates for this. Especially the ones with locked BIOS and unlocked CPUs. It still differs from normal overclocking in that the multiplier instead of bus speed is used. Some people think this is push button overclocking, but you still need power and cooling to make it work. That's where the laptops usually come up short. But feel free to prove me wrong! Maybe a Peltier docking station?

Nah lol. I said I won't stay with overclocking this. It's just one of those things that with everything I get ahold of...I check if it can be clocked up for the hell of it.

Since there are no aftermarket OC parts for laptops those guys get pretty creative. Software like RW Everything and other tricks abound there. It may not produce much in the way of results, but could provide some useful info.
