So I currently am running a first gen ryzen cpu (5 1600) and just recently replaced my gtx 1070 with a rtx 3060.
is it worth upgrading my processer too? if so, which gen ryzen should i aim for? i'm on 1440p btw
i don't play anything SUPER demanding, but i do lots of modding on games like fallout 4, skyrim, etc.
and one last thing, my ryzen 5 came with a stock fan cooler, will that be enough for the newer gen ryzen's?
thanks!

Ryzen 5600(X) will be a slight improvement if you use a 1080p monitor and don't max out games, the 1600 cooler is okay for 5600(X) but a bit noisy. 5700XT performs similar to 3060. Only reason I would upgrade is if you use dlss and 1080p, then there can be quite a difference.

which motherboard do you have? yea you could probably upgrade to a 5600 (upgrade the bios first!) , also did you try ocing the 1600? the first gen ryzen can get you some extra frames if you oc it and tweak the ram too. with 1070 > 3060 you went like from 1070 to a 1080ti (for reference)

T52d BIOS added support for Vermeer, so 5000 series. Your 1600 was a 65 TDP, I’m sure that the new 65 TDP CPUs has about the same heat output, and if you are happy with a heatsink that run 100% then you are good.

Edit: it seems like the 5600X comes with a cooler. The world has to many spare AMD coolers

i'm at 1440p sorry i forgot to mention that in my post lol. i'll fix that

Not really worth upgrading for the games you play, but when they release the new ones, yeah.

Are you happy with the performance you are getting right now? If so, why upgrade.

"CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 2666mhz" - I might consider more and faster RAM first.

i have a GIGABYTE GA-AB350-GAMING 3 (rev. 1.0)
and so what you're saying the 3060 wasn't as big an upgrade as i thought?

point taken.
also i should update the ram i have listed, i have 32gb now but it's the same ram.

I would keep the cpu. Try tweaking your ram first. Maybe you are lucky and can overclock it to 3200+. You can get 20% better cpu performance tuning ram.

yea, i already saw that in your system specs, sorry i was kinda late. well 3060 is a nice card, nothing to brag about (yea imo that upgrade was a bit on a weird side, but hey its still an upgrade and with current gpu situation its kinda ok). You could try overclocking the 1600 btw, tweak the ram timings aswell that will give you some more perf cpu wise.

1070 to 3060 is about 15-20% difference, so maybe 10-20 extra frames. At 1440p you won't see a huge difference between the 1600 and, lets say, a 5600(X)... and going anything higher (5700, 5800X) is probably too much just for gaming.

I agree with getting faster RAM (3200-3600) and an aftermarket cooler if there's an extra $20-30 to spare.

OP has 32 GB. Good luck finding any faster 32 GB set for cheap for a 1. Gen CPU and MB. 16 GB, sure, but using $250-300 for a 3600 mts b-die can’t be priority one.

Yeah 3060 at 1440p wont be CPU limit, unless you play starcraft 2 or sins of a solar empire.

3200mhz on a zen 1 CPU is extremely optimistic, and 3600 is a fever dream. First gen ryzen struggled to hit 3000 mhz let alone anythign higher, and you had to use samsung B die with single rank usually to achieve that.

If you already

If you already have 32GB of RAM, even if only 2666MHz, upgrading that to faster RAM is not worth it. It is highly unlikely you would "see" any difference except in benchmark tests.

oof i like to play SCII once in a while lol. but not often enough to where i could justify a few hundred bucks for new hardware lol

ahhh ok! thanks!

Zen 3 features major improvements on AVX decoding, and in SCII and SoaSE, it shows abnormal improvements, especially in late game where every CPU struggles. A cheaper zen 3, like the supposedly $159 ryzen 5500, would allow you to benefit in that scenario without breaking the bank.

But if its not often perhaps wait for zen 4 launch and get a low end zen 3 part on discount. Price might go below $100 once zen 4 is out.

Actually I tuned a 2400G (based on gen 1) last year and Micron rev E ran fine at 3533cl16 :)

If you have rev E there is a good chance you can do 3200 atleast :)

I think by upgrading hes cpu to a ryzen 5 3600 or 5600x, will get him a little more fps and a lot better frame times due to better ipc and clocks speeds and higher memory speeds, and hes system will fell more snappier so ya if its was me it would be worth it

Don't go 3600, it's way slower than 5600X (sometimes 5600X is 50% faster) . I would buy R5 5600, 200usd.

I agree when the Ryzen 5600 comes out hopefully its priced well at msrp and performs close the 5600x

Pretty much what everyone else above me is saying, get the Ryzen 5 5600, stock cooler should be fine & try to overclock that RAM abit if you can. I myself purchased a Ryzen 5 5600, should be arriving today, can't wait, btw you should definitely notice an improvement in FPS, both mins & max, especially in the dense city parts of Fallout 4.

Going to Zen3 (5000 series) will boost your frame-rate in some games. Mostly at 1080P. The tests I did going from 3800X to 5800X it was 20% using a RTX 3080 average over 16 games.

AMD has already announced their new lineup, get a 5700X if 300EUR/USD is fine :) Getting it as well later.

Still can't beat the Intel Core i5-12400F for $229.99 cdn , its the best price to performance cpu out there

Yeah but as the OP has AM4 hardware already..
