I've just finished my HSC, and after having been deprived of any gaming for the past year i've decided to get back into it. I've gone out and bought Resident Evil 5, Prototype and Assassins creed 2..

Although my system handles them relatively well, performance is sluggish on high graphics, especially during larger environment parts of the games. I have no idea what's out there at the moment in terms of graphic cards under $250.. Any suggestions?

Specs:
Q6600
4GB Kingston
HD3870

Considering your pic, I am going to assume you want ATI GPU's only.

current pics would be either the HD 5770 1GB or the HD 4870. For details about performance, click on the link below.

If I am not mistake, as a reference, your HD 3870 should perform about the same as a HD 4830 512 MB.

ati 5850 hands down if you can wait a bit for supply to come up and demand to drop that is ive got 2 5850s and they kick some major ass in games that use them still waiting on better crossfire drivers but ive managed to get some games running smoothly at 32x AA lol and it looks amazing and at msrp of $259 if u can hold on a bit i would think the 5850 1gig would fit your needs perfectly

Okay great, I might do some research and check out what local vendors have in stock.

I forgot about my avatar, I'm quite open to Nvidia solutions also, sorry probably should have mentioned that. :)

ATI has the newest, best hardware out at the moment. NVIDIA's new solution is still months away, nobody really even knows if it works yet either. The 5870/5850 are basically the best single-chip boards you can buy ATM, but there are massive supply shortages currently.

thus my point about waiting for a little bit

5850s are heavily overclockable they surpass a gtx285 have full dx11 support etc basically getting anything other then a 5800 series right now dosent make any sense at all ;)

You are mistaken, the 3870 gets its ass kicked by a 4810/4730. :p
In fact the 4670 lies between a 3850 and a 3870.
The HD3Ks got raped quite hard in AA.

5850 for huge performance (u will see its true performance if u overclock quite a bit your cpu)

5770 for bang for the buck

Went for the budget buy, got the 5770. Re5 looks amazing.

What is a 4810/4730?

Sadly, a 5850 is selling for closer to $300 nowadays.

If you have Vista or Win7 and want DX11, well, a 5770 is the next cheapest card, but performs worse than a 4870 or 4890.

If you have WinXP or do not care about DX11, go for either a 4870 1GB or a 4890. Avoid anything with only 512MB.. several of the newer games use over 600-700MB of buffer.

If you want the best for $250 with DX11, try to find two 5750's for $250 if you can.. it might be just a tad bit more with shipping/tax..

Hope this helps dude!
