Yes better going value, better to not buy that titan today and get a Fury \ 980 TI and save 3-400$ and buy another card 4-5 years later = NEW TOYS :).
This was kind of my opinion. Buy mid-high range cards for half the price, but twice as often. Seems like you get to keep up with the newer feature sets that way.

I mean, what if, oh I don't know, DirectX 13 comes out and you want it really bad, but you're still trying to stretch out the usefulness of your Titan?

Well that helps then, one less thing to consider.
Guru 3d reports that kingpin went on sale 22nd of July, for anyone thats interested.
Asus Strix 980ti is £599 on Amazon as oppose to £660 on OCUK. And of course Amazon will refund you just for a laugh. If my Titan OC's well I will stick with it. If it's not looking good then I could just swap it for a Strix. Amazon prime is my new fave place for buying (and trying lol) tech.

lol, it went on sale yesterday at 6pm (UK time). The 80% asic card sold out in literally 30 seconds. Within 2 mins, all 4 asic levels were sold out. I know - I was there, frantically clicking and being frustrated at EVGA's Paypal failings. Bought a Classified instead (good for it's cooler and dual bios for relaxing TDP limits) but got an e-mail at 11pm from EVGA saying they'd reserved a card for me. So, no Classy and a KIngpin instead. You can't buy them now from EVGA - you'll need to wait for retail or ebay. Fuck ebay.

(page left open while doing other stuff) It's not the be all and end all anyway, I'm just throwing some thoughts about. With Amazons return policy it's nice to be able to try stuff while you make up your mind. It's still a tough call, and probably going to end in tossing a coin, after all, it seems to be all down to opinions as I can't find any comparisons of a water cooled Titan and a good 980ti and on top of that there is the silicon lottery.

Nice work dude. That must have been a gratifying moment when you opened that email.

I was close to buying a Titan X. I'd personally rather have the full core count, plus I know I can buy water blocks for it right now. You might get people with better fps or benches on a 980ti and likewise, you might get better than them. You know what performance you'll get with whatever you buy. It's all down to personal preferences and cash outlay.

@the54thvoid Long story short, I ended up with a classified. Found something interesting on another forum. Classified 780ti's EK waterblock fits 980ti classified. A guy got it set up, A EK rep on the thread said that EK agree it looks like they are a match but they are still yet to confirm 100% and start remaking them. I think this goes for the kingpin also. I can give you the link if you like.

I ended up with a 980ti Kingpin :D. I have a Bitspower block coming from the US. It sort of fits but like the EK block probably requires an extra memory pad to contact for cooling. The Vram doesn't run hot on Maxwell, according to the guys at Kingpin cooling, so the block coverage isn't too much of a biggie.

If you're lucky your Classy will hit the same clocks my Kingpin does and if I'm unlucky (I usually am) my card will end up clocking lower

Well it's not looking like I am lucky. I can only just get a 30mhz OC, unless I am doing something wrong I am new to Nvidia. My card boosts on it's own to 1405 but I can't get it to go much higher.

Your block, is it for a 780ti?

No, it's the 980 Kingpin block but it mostly fits the 980ti KP (apparently). It's fun taking a gamble on an expensive card with an imported block. FTR, do you know that the Maxwell cards dont cope well with over voltage? They scale well with temps under 20 and even more so as it gets colder. You need exotic cooling to get much above 1550Mhz.

I'm still on Kepler cards (KP arrives tomorrow) but if Maxwell is similar, you need to push the OC up in 13Mhz increments. If I type in 30Mhz for OC, it will give about 26Mhz. In fact, until I hit about 39Mhz, it still gives only 26Mhz. It's all to do with the boost tables. Best advice is to visit overclock.net - they have very good advice for Oc'ing. It's where I went to learn about flashing and soft modding my original Titan.

Yes I am aware that adding v is not going to give me much but I was expecting to get a better OC than I am getting without any extra voltage. Just seems strange that it won't OC more than 30mhz. I'm on OCN at the moment but not getting much advice atm.
Is there any way to turn off GPU boost2?

Don't know what I did but suddenly power target has gone up to 141%, previously stuck on 115% See what happens now:)

Gotta love these threads, where the OP is already dead set on buying whatever the fuck he wants then asks for advice, gets the opposite advice, and still does what he wanted regardless.

I always wonder what matters most here, the e-peen or actually listening.

I'll leave it at that. Consumerism at its finest right :)

Gotta love these trolling thread-crappers that post nothing useful, nor adding anything remotely helpful to the discussion in any way. You might want to learn to read first, buddy...I asked Titan owners for feedback on how loud it was -- because W1zzard's Titan X video was showing the worst coil whine I've heard in a long time and was worried that it was a normal thing for them. I didn't ask to be persuaded to buy a 980 Ti.

And the reason why I'm glad to have bought this card over any 980 Ti has nothing to do with e-peen, you muppet -- but because, as I expected, I've now used my card long enough to know 6GB VRAM even @1080p already isn't cutting it, let alone at 3440x1440p 2-3 years down the line -- since Shadow of Mordor already eats almost 7GBs near the end of the campaign at 1080p, which none of the reviewers bothered to mention since they were either using the pointless in-game benchmark (which only uses ~4.7GB) or using the first few levels of the campaign for testing. HBM might delay games from going much above that 6GB VRAM mark somewhat but I'm not waiting another year or more for Nvidia's HBM cards to drop, as I've been playing the waiting game for about 5 years now.

if you have the money now would you not buy a new card in 2 or 3 years-because then titanx is too slow anyways.
but this is not intended to make you feel bad about your purchase-have fun with the card AM*

And if you had read the *countless* replies to this VRAM usage on ANY thread regarding Shadow of Mordor or other games, you would have known that games fill up VRAM because they can, not because they need to. These cards are nowhere near the gpu horsepower required to push games that actually actively USE 12 GB of VRAM. Just like these cards are only just approaching the grunt needed to comfortably run 4K in very demanding games.

I post tons of useful stuff, including little tidbits of info like the above, and I am not the only one.

But enjoy that Titan.

Truth. Many games will use what VRAM is available, which is why my 780 with 3GB of VRAM plays Shadow of Mordor just fine. The game knows that's all that's available.
