tomorrow I go quad...maybe?

Im going for a gaming pc tomorrow and Imma be buying a q9300 and I'm not sure what motherboard what ever is good there and is ddr21066 at least(then I'd know if I can use my ddr2800's) but is quad worth it for gaming?

I would say so. I enjoyed my Q6600 for gaming. I saw no real difference in the Q@3.6 or my E8400@3.9, but the Q6600 was just more fun to mess with. Things loaded faster, I was very happy about it.

well for the bang for the buck compared to the Q6600 is the Phenom 9850.... benches prove it and with the P II coming out in January its as close to the I7 chip as it gets... (for less money)

If you have a nice dual and you can upgrade the graphics without a bottleneck then gaming does not require a quad. Quads are very nice. I feel my system ran more smoothly when I switched from a E8600 to a Q9550.

If gamings your thing, go dual core, there are like 11 TRUE (as in un-patched etc) multithredded games in the whole wild world and some of those actually show only a little performance benefit from a quad, a dual core running at 4gig is going to play 97% of games better than a Q9300 running at 3gig.....just my 2 penneth worth, ohhh and I am a quad owner!

I would take a nice litle E0 stepping E8400 instead.

All the above mean that a quad will give you one of two things:

anyway I love my quad. Its fun to play with than duals. They give you a hard time when OCing

We have been saying those exact words ever since the first quads hit retail, there has been little progress in 2 years in the multithredded arena TBH. I am a quad owner and I would never go back to a Dual core, but I dont predominantly game as the OP has stated his will be a gaming rig with a Q9300 in it, bottom line is, for gaming, a quad with minimal L2 cache at just 3gig is not going to run most games as well as a dual core at 4gig IMO......now if he was saying for example he was getting a Q9550 or perhaps even a decent Q6600 g0 my response might well be different......take Crysis for example, it is CPU speed driven, if you take a dual core, say the E8500 and pit it against a quad core at 2.33gig stock you would find that the FPS difference is around 50% advantage for the dual core (at 16xx resolution)but in supreme commander which is multithredded, the quad core gets a small advantage, add to that the fact that the E8500 clocks nicely, and the Q9300 doesent and the facts speak for themselves.

As I said, I am not quad bashing, I own one and I beleive that they are far superior chips to dual cores, I just dont feel that specifically in gaming they bring a great deal of benefit.

Clock for clock may well be accurate, but as dual cores are stocked at higher clocks usually, certainly in like for like pricing it's pretty irrelivent unless of course people who buy an E8400 actually downclock their chips), fact is most games are only single thredded so you always have another core to worry about any process running in the background, some statistics in gaming support your comments but the majority dont.

Basic facts suggest that a Q6600 stocked at 2.4gig are not going to run most games as quickly as a stock E8400 which in the UK are both around the same price. I know which I would buy.....and clearly so do you but I guess we both do a lot more than game with our chips?
