It would prevent soooooo many arguments on these forums if there was a general consensus that a post is bad, rather than a series of back-and-forth “arguments” amongst aggrieved parties as to why it is, much like good posts being affirmed prevent users from contending them.

Having moderated high school and college policy debate forums for many years, where those users actually all knew each other IRL and debated their contentions amongst their peers in tournaments with more qualified judges with transparent values/curricula, I could go on and on about why this feature would prevent a lot of trolling, but I’ll leave this dumb up/down vote “question” system to do the talking for me.

I appreciate that this forum doesn’t want to alienate users/revenue with such a function, but some posts are just bad, misleading, or uninformed, and the moderation here leaves a lot to be desired, regardless if that’s a problem of a lack of time on moderators’ part or a lack of clearly defined forum rules (on those debate forums moderators are elected yearly and rules are debated, which is something I don’t think this forum is ready for).

Hope you will consider; thanks!

Solution
Wow, this really popped off! Thanks to the three or four users who responded substantively with, you know, words instead of feelings. As for the 70+ other negative reacts, well, lol

Don’t worry, no one here has ever hurt my feelings, and I’m not interested in policing conversations (although I am curious about the nazis analogy — huh?) — that’s what moderation is for. I mean, I’ve debated many of you to all ends of the earth, and have had many of my posts deleted as well. Not fishing for likes here (obvs), but if you think I made this suggestion to prevent polite, sometimes elevating to heated/trolly discussion, then you probably haven’t interacted with me. :) No one is on my ignore list because I like the diversity of opinions...

This sounds illegal.

Just a thought... if we did science this way, it might hinder progress; perhaps the same for technology.
Science isn't much different. We have "peer review" for a reason.

For what it is worth, here is my take.....

Who cares if a post is shit/does not conform to your norm? More people need to learn to ignore, refrain from retorting, and move on.
Nothing that goes on here is so important that we need to single anyone out.

Also as a retired mod here, I can say that all reports are dealt with and conversations happen. What the masses need to realize is that there are three sides to every story, and those looking through tinted glasses do not always see things the same as moderation does from the outside. Hense why they may not take the action you feel is needed.

Look, I think the part about learning to be nice at TPU is the best medicine. Just keep in mind that whether you argue with a troll or just let them type into an empty forum (if you do not feed them) tommorow will still come.

Yes. Yes you are. :D

No idea where this will go but it has been discussed before and all you'll get is partisan thumb-waving. And don't we have angry face emoji's to show our malcontent?

And, as a mod, can I say, nobody asks to be a mod, and if they do - they certainly don't get asked to become one (you want power - you can GTFO). Usually, we have to sleep with the site owner for 7 nights under a blood red moon and if he likes us, we stay. Don't ask what the supermods need to do.

But seriously, as a mod on this forum, it's good to see such an active tribe of reprobates (that's the mods) trying to chaperone the entire gamut of political and social ideology. Do we get it right? No. Do we care? A little. But do you guys have fun giving us such a hard freaking job to do that rewards us with sweet FA? I don't even know. But hell, it's a fun ride.

But if I can ask one thing? Just try and be nice to one another, regardless of how much of a butt-muncher you think the other person is. Peace out you mindless trolls. :rockout:

I'm an old member, and the only one(pita) I'm trying to be better, though i still get rubbed the wrong way occasionally

If people would just follow this-Who cares if a post is shit/does not conform to your norm? More people need to learn to ignore, refrain from retorting, and move on." I probably wouldn't be the Forum pita

I just put idiots on ignore now.
I have 140+ members ignored. This is the only real solution. I have cut out all of the fan boys and people who argue in bad faith. I can read tpu posts now without having to skim past all of them to get to the good stuff. If I want to, I can show ignored content and see what I am missing.

We already have a negative react. It's when everyone does that angry face reaction to someone giving false information, having an attitude for no reason, etc.

If what we have now (which works btw) doesn't satisfy you, then nothing will. There isn't a point to create a system that has a potential to divide the forum.

Edit: As someone already pointed out with my post. Look how easy that is.

Can't blame you lol

I've never put anyone on ignore no matter how much they annoy me. I've never thought it a particularly good idea either, because they can be saying all sorts of crap about you that everyone can see and trashing your reputation / credibility, but you can't see it so you can't defend yourself and / or report them. On my forum however, I can ahem, just deal with obnoxious users. ;) I've not had anyone like that so far though, thankfully.

EDIT: clarified wording.
Idgaf what they say, if i see something uncalled for I get mods involved when need be.

Yeah, I've found myself hitting that report button often now since people can't be considerate or respectful anymore. Something needs to happen because right now the amount of backwards-assed comments is getting worse.

Nah, the point is discussing ideas and presenting facts to substantiate our view, likes and dislikes are a ambiguous cheap way to do so. If an idea has merit it can be backed with easily found facts and articulated. If a idea is bad it should be replied to with facts, reason and logic to help others learn. I know I’m guilty of a bit of trolling and occasionally some tomfoolery, and I get called out on it as I and we all should

Not fishing for likes here (obvs), but if you think I made this suggestion to prevent polite, sometimes elevating to heated/trolly discussion, then you probably haven’t interacted with me. :) No one is on my ignore list because I like the diversity of opinions, and I generally avoid reporting posts unless they’re conspiracy theories or sexist/racist (in the latter case I often just say as much rather than reporting — free speech rules!). If I think engaging is pointless or a waste of my time, I just ignore the post (or troll it to death lol).

I might agree that the angry react suffices, but, like I said, I’m not angry  A simple thumbs down indicates disagreement, or that a proposition is bad, and not much else, unlike an angry react that implies frustration or a personal offense. If a user feels alienated by negative reacts, well, that’s their problem, isn’t it? If you disagree with someone and want to react in a more substantiate way than a “dislike,” how does this prevent you from posting your disagreement? Incidentally, I often find users without the wits for discussion prefer the laugh react.

The idea is obviously wildly unpopular, so I’ll leave it here but, again, probably could’ve saved a lot of “reading” with some downvotes lol

A. People like to argue here
B. We've tried it. It's just a popularity contest not a statement of right or wrong
C. The mods do a fine job
D. Sometimes people think they are right, in fact insist on it when they are clearly wrong. I don't feel the need to correct them. You can't fix stupid
E. We have a little angry face if you feel the need

Double post, for clarification: the debate forum i moderated was for policy debaters who debated each other at tournaments held IRL. They would argue online as well. We had dislikes on the forum and, quite frankly, the threads were all much more civil than a lot of the disagreements here. Maybe that’s just because they were used to a judge IRL explaining why their argument was bad, but maybe not. Probably it had more to do with their actually knowing what an argument is (or not and losing so much they quit), unlike a lot of the users here (see the post directly above this — just saying that a dislike feature prevents discussion doesn’t make it true, as has been demonstrated on every Reddit thread ever, nor does it respond to any of the claims I literally just made to object to that claim — an argument without a warrant is just an opinion, a react is not moderation, etc). I don’t recall ever witnessing any physical altercations and, aside from the occasional name calling (which was rare as it implied that the name caller was bad at debating), people generally let the facts/better argument speak for themselves. Mostly we all just got drunk and did drugs and had sex after — those nerds were wild.

Meh, maybe TPU just needs to take a logic course. Honestly should be part of standard curricula for remedial education.

PS What we have now is the FB react system… That one has no dislikes, either.

Why would a negative react prevent you from debating and challenging others’ views?

Example; I just downvoted you and argued against your claim.
