EDIT: April 16, 2022:

Rented a UT2004 server for a month to test it out!!!

It is a public server.

Name on the server is: TPU-UT2004
IP address is: 108.61.104.100

You can add that IP address in your favorites within the game to make it easier to find.

It has been a ton of years since messing with UT server settings, so if anyone knows how, shoot me a PM and I'll get you set to log into the server to adjust settings.

If someone knows how, we could set up preferred maps, game types, etc...

I just rented a server in Atlanta Georgia for now just to test. It is easy, and free, to change locations if we find ping times are bad.

With a Poll

So, during a small conversation on the thread about the new Unreal 5 Engine, myself and @Anoniem started talking about firing up a TPU Unreal Tournament server.

How many of us TPU members still fire up a UT game now and then?

What version, IE UT, UT2003, or UT2004, do you play?

Would making a TPU UT server interest you?

I think both @Anoniem and myself have all of the above.

If this sounds like fun, post here with interest and which version you would prefer to see as a TPU server?

Here is my latest post as of 04/13/22 about 8:45PM US MDT

Since these are some nostalgic/vintage games, the servers are cheap as heck. LOL

We can get either game for $0.79 per slot for private servers on either game server. I would imagine that we would want to go with a private server.

UT2004

UT99

Heck, we can do a 20 player private server for $15.95USD per month.
Dang, that's cheap as hell.

I guess the next thing would be to figure out where to have it located?

They have 9 locations in the US along with UK, Italy, Australia, and several other locations.

I see currently that UT99 is leading with 17 votes and UT2004 has 15 votes.

This is looking very promising going forward. :peace: :peace: :peace:

This server would be up 24/7 as well.
I'm not that great at setting up game servers, so I would want to give someone with more knowledge admin rights to the server to control the games and what not....

UT99 once in a blue moon. Though I do think i have the other games on steam but were never that deeply in to them. UT99 just towers above them all in general due to it being more fast paced and obviously a classic. I do think the games slowed down after UT99.

If theres a server, i'll jump on every once in a while. Though my ping will suck seeing as im from the UK so i expect to get killed a lot more.

I'm thinking I might actually rent a server, so it might not be so bad. Would kind of depend on where the server is I guess.

I loved 2k4. Just dug it up the other day! I'd be down to play, though I need to find a DVD player.

I still have my old UT99 installer disc, used to play that a lot on my old PC, always with bots though, the few servers that had acceptable ping on the multiplayer list were from my country and community here is beyond toxic, to put it lightly, just like IRL most of the people in multiplayer games are far from civilised or even humanly decent... servers from other countries have terrible ping on my connection so I rather play with bots or singleplayer games to keep my sanity.

It's better with friends but none of my friends plays the same games as me and I can't pay for Steam anyway. Remember, no launchers.

Didn't knew there was a 2003 game tbh.

I wish I still had my DVD's, I almost picked up UT2k4 on GOG, but apparently you have to contact support for an additional MP key, can anyone confirm this or any issues with it?

Hmm, I wonder if it's a GOG thing or something. I don't recall ever needing a separate key to play multiplayer.

I have UT2004 on Steam and it's my personal favourite. Had lots of fun even playing against bots back in the day.

UT99 is the game of the year(s=) but UT2004 does have vehicles so I spice my playtime with some "Onslaught" from time to time.
Looks like I have the gold edition on Steam as well. I remember playing that also back in the day and how smooth it ran on P2-400 & GF2 MX.

A bit late to the party, t'was a long day, thanks @stinger608 for making the thread and going through the effort :D I personally both like 99 and 2004, 2003 is fine too but 2004 has some tweaks that I like a bit more. And I'm really glad to see there are still people willing to play these games! Regarding the 2004 MP key; no clue why GoG has that requirement. I can't seem to find anything on the Steam store that suggests that you need an additional key. It probably just comes down to DRM or something like that. Now my old images are corrupt, they were recovered from one of my drives that went up in flames (yes, physical flames, PSU's baby). Aaand I lost my original UT2004 metal case with the install media during moving in 2018. But it can still be bought so not an issue.

Getting a legit copy is still an option so that's step one. Getting a server to run is another thing all together. The most important thing will be lag, so if we go the rented server route we'd need to look in which place/country it resides. I'll have a look at what's available here and post some options, you guys are free to contribute :p Now one of us could host a dedicated server at home (or a rogue machine where you work :p) but that does come with some pretty nasty caveats like privacy etc. which are not that appealing IMHO. Besides that you'd have the "host advantage" which is a kind of doping hahaha.

After the server part has been taken care of we'll just toss coins on maps and modes or figure out some sort of roster :D

For now let's just see how many of us are actually interested.

I'd be down for UT99. You can get it running with DirectX 10. See this site: https://www.kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/

There is a v451 community patch out there too which fixes a few things, network bugs included.

I still play it sometimes and think this idea is epic. I'd be interested in UT1999 & UT2004.

You can still buy it on Steam. That should hopefully work in MP mode.

I have a feeling texture packs will be needed for todays GPUs for 99, not sure about 2k3/4. I just recalled Deus Ex on a x1950 Pro running hyper mode...

Yeppers, for sure. I have a Steam copy and have played multiplayer several times.

Oh I miss those Nali.

Playing UT99 and TF/CS 1.3. I just want to go back to the dial-up days. I only played instagib on UT. Same with Q3.

Also UT cdkey servers are long gone. Both UT99 and Q3 do not need keys to play online.

Did anyone play a on the Dreamcast?

I spent New Year's Eve 1999 sitting at work playing UT99 over dial-up with our West Coast IT director waiting for the servers to crash and die when Y2K arrived at midnight.

I could probably pop in every now and then and get my ass handed to me if we get a server going. :fear::laugh:

@stinger608 - If you decide to rent one let me know. I'd be willing to paypal you some $ and share the cost.
