Isn't this lovely?
Sounds like being in the UK for energy prices.... :( I feel for you guys...

My question is, why should that effect peoples prices when the people might not have asked for it??....

If we can get our legislative bodies out of the Regulation==Bad mindset, it may be, if not solvable, at least mitigable. There are already different rate schedules in most (all?) locales for residential v. commercial, so it's not too big a leap to conceive of extremely large consumers being charged, say, an order of magnitude more. But I'm not holding my breath.

Well, I'm finally up and running with one of the 4080 Super's. Operating on Win10 right now until I get the Ubuntu machine loaded up. Currently producing 16M ppd, but lacking consistency as I've gotten several crashes and had to down clock to 2700mhz. This card was defaulting to 2760mhz! Hoping to avg around 20m ppd with Ubuntu.

Tried loading Ubuntu 24.04 LTS about 8 times and it kept freezing during install. Swapped out SSD's and changed USB's I was booting from. Even changed the Distro to 24.10, but kept freezing. Turns out it was some 10 year old OCZ Ram that the Mobo did not like. Typing this post on the Linux rig right now and my Hybrid GTX 980 ti is producing 1.854M ppd. Gonna switch the 4080 over to Linux, but have to do some fancy footwork with power supplies first. Pic of both machines Fahclients.

I now have the RTX 4080 folding under Linux and it's potent and consistent. Almost 24 hrs and no crashes/bad work units(crosses fingers). Best PPD is 21M and worst is 15M. Pic is attached of 12 year old rig(i7-870) and the Antec TP-750 that is powering it. Pulling 410 watts at the wall outlet.

Very nice @BUCK NASTY !! The v8-3 site looks nice and interesting... I'll try and see if I can get registered and that working as it just tells me at the moment, no machines or something to display... Be nice if it tracked all of them that I use :)

Nice going Cap! That bench looks familiar ;)

I was just wondering, if anyone else had tried the new version of FAH at all?? :)

FAH Download Linky - new

FAH Download Linky - old

Taking a bit of getting used to but hopefully it'll be good. Mines stopped downloading new tasks for some reason, so unsure at the moment if its a client problem on the PC or if its their end.. Gonna try on another PC :)

Didn't even know there was one. May give it a go after the 1st of the year.

I have been out of the Folding game for about 8 years, but these are the benefits I see from V8.3:

  • Your info is tied to your Login. Simply download the client, log in with your username and password and the client will auto populate your Username/Team/and Passkey.
  • All active machines are combined on Web Control for monitoring. You can review all machine logs from one client. Your can also control the folding function of all active machines from one client. Of course, a constant internet connection is required.
  • It's easy set up and operation is identical in Windows and Linux. Setting up a Linux machine has never been easier. Folding in Linux is ultra stable and has the benefits of an additional 20% PPD for faster cards over Windows OS.
I'm going to update all the tutorials to bring them current and showcase the benefits of the new client. I'll also create a Linux tutorial for the adventurous members.

Well I noticed one which really only matters if your electric costs are through the roof, but just a word of warning everyone, remember not to click the big green button *FOLD* at the top of the page and have all your machines on....

08-12-24 FAH Group of PCs - learn not to press the main fold button!! 1.PNG

I was just trying to update the software on my crunching and folding machines... serves me right
I think at the time the sun was a little bit out and the solar was actually doing something but still was pulling another 2kW+ from the grid so oops..... :) Only two machines remain on for the moment, just doing some converting on my two machines I use for some films later on tonight :) Damn my stupidity

I'm not such a fan of not knowing how many points per work unit I'm getting as well, its a shame that its no longer in this version... You could see how much you where getting per unit than what your getting a day.....

@phill , What are your current costs per KWH from the grid? I'm swapping out the FX-9590 for a FX-4130 to save a few watts on the Linux/RTX 4080s rig.

It really does vary :)

Sometimes they pay me to use electric and other times they can charge anything upto £1/kW....

Here's a grab of todays costs -

Started off very cheap so had a few things on this morning, but this afternoon, after the suns gone in, it would kill me running it all at once... I think so far, I'm guessing but I've used about 20kW maybe?? My highest for the day was 70kW but that was when the grid was so cheap, I literally had everything on all day lol :) That I think was either Christmas Eve or Boxing day last year, I loved it :) Averaged 1p/kW :)

I've found having a cheap quad core (low powered thing something like a 7500T or something (had one from a mining rig, helped with the loads as the dual core (not HT) was pegged at 100% a lot of the time which I didn't like, so switched it out... Found it wasn't too bad :)

v8.3 I cannot use. I have to be connected to the internet at all times which I can"t do. Back to 7.6 for me.

Hello all, I am a new member of the forums and coming here because of @damric and ExtremeHW.net closing down. I folded 16 billion points for EHW. Give me another year and a half and I'll get that much here :)

I currently fold on an MSI RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio in Linux 24/7. This is my desktop and overclocking tool (GWE)

I haven't posted a WU yet, but should soon.

My folding name is bigred. Here is my profile: https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=1311203

@neurotix , it's a pleasure to have you onboard. Are you getting 35M PPD from the 4090 alone? I see your running Green with Envy..., is the 4090 overclocked? Nice to have another Linux folder to learn from.:rockout:

Edit: Looks like I need to get moving on that 2nd 4080 Super:laugh:

I am getting 35-38 mil daily lately in Linux. The 4090 is overclocked with GreenWithEnvy to about 2955MHz max. I leave the power limit alone and don't run a custom BIOS on the card (like the Galax 666w BIOS) because according to GWE, the heaviest work units only draw about 400w max from the card. I have tested this with a Kill-a-watt meter also. Frequently the card will be running ~2850 with the work units I'm getting lately.

The card can run Superposition 1080p Extreme and 8k optimized at 3155MHz in Windows, however in Linux if it exceeds 3000, the system will lock up.

Still great to get such high points, I saw a video around the time I got my 4090 with some guy being all excited over 24m PPD and I was like um yeah I'm getting 35m

Also, distro is Linux Mint 21.3. using 535 drivers.

Hope this helps. Also these new work units lately are pretty crazy:

@neurotix I just threw this rig together 1 week ago to get up and folding again in Linux. Running Ubuntu 24.10 with 550 drivers and the 4080 is topping out at 22M ppd at stock clocks with a FX-9590(4.7Ghz). The 8-core was pulling 460w thru the Kill-a-watt. Today I swapped in a slower FX-4130 Quad(3.7Ghz) and wattage dropped 80w to 380w, but only mustering up 21m ppd at best right now. Aside from the GPU, all my hardware is 10+ years old and it's extensive. I even have 2x 4P rigs(48 core Magny-Cour Opterons) in boxes in the garage. They were great producers until -bigadv bonuses ended.

Looking to add another 4080 Super, but cards are scarce and demanding a premium right now. I have considered buying a pre-built to scavenge the card and sell off the parts. For the cost of the pre-built, I could pick up a 4090 by itself. You're thinking the 4090 pulls 400w while folding?

According to GreenWithEnvy, the highest power draw I see while folding is 400w. With the kill-a-watt the system draws around 550w and if I stop folding, it draws about 150w idle. That's where I am getting that value. Also, there are many WUs I get that GWE reports a 350w power draw on.

Looks like I may have to install an older distro. GWE will not run under Wayland.:banghead:

Firstly, welcome to the forums and FAH team @neurotix !! It's great to see more members coming over and we do welcome any and all new members that wish to help the team and the cause :)

It's amazing to see the 4090s at work, they sure can make some great power there and the power draw seems to be pretty decent, the 3090 I have seems to be a little old in the tooth but I'm not planning on changing things just yet :)

Plus, I'm not sure I can afford much more power at the moment, the prices today are pretty intense....

If things where cheaper over here at the best of times, I'd not mind it so much, but today is just crazy money, so I've had a few PCs on over night crunching and folding and for the rest of the day, I'll have them powered off, I simply can't afford £1/kW  If everything was on it would be close to £6/hour here... Nope!! :D That said, I do like the performance/price/watt sort of area, so I do only try and run the most efficient systems I can, when there's not so much solar and so on :) Hopefully tomorrow will be a little better.....

That's modern and screamingly fast compared to my 2060 I can't even afford to run at the moment.

What distro? Weird, I obviously use Cinnamon, and I thought it run under Wayland now too. Flatpak doesn't work under Wayland? I guess Cinnamon doesn't either.

Thank you for the welcome! Yes, I have some European friends and the stupid war has made electricity super expensive for you guys.

We pay about 9c/kWh and folding 24/7 on the 4090 costs about $40 a month. Even that seems expensive to me, but I can't complain compared to you guys over the pond right now.

Anyone care to direct me to the main mechanical keyboard thread here, please? (Assuming there is one)
