Ubisoft is looking to capture itself a piece of the lucrative pie of live service games with its Assassin's Creed franchise. Following on the steps of multiple game development studios (let's not forget Bungie's Destiny 2, Fortnite, and the upcoming Halo Infinite), Ubisoft seems to have reached the conclusion that their Assassin's Creed universe is better served by being treated exactly like that - a forever evolving, frequently updated framework instead of the usual one-off interpretations of the franchise.

Assassin's Creed Infinity (working title) will supposedly usher in multiple historical settings and a collaborative, inter-studio developmental framework between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec, who will jointly "(...) guide, grow, evolve, and define the overall future of Assassin's Creed". Ubisoft wants to end the constant baton-passing of Assassin's Creed through its two development studios, and hopes that this change (alongside a mixed studio leadership) allows the franchise to really breathe in their in-house talent independent of developmental location.

It remains to be seen exactly what this means for the franchise - and the way in which development of this online-centric Assassin's Creed experience will impact mainline Assassin's Creed games is still up in the air. It seems fair to consider that the online focus and accompanying monetization features that enable such games to thrive likely means Ubisoft will sacrifice part of its single-player focus on Assassin's Creed. A shift towards providing an ever-evolving narrative that spans centuries of accurate (and not so accurate) history is expensive, as is having two studios in constant collaboration. No information on development platforms, release date, or other details were available at time of writing.

wow, corporations really do hate making good single player games

I fear this next assassin game is gonna be pure garbage.

I share you fears. :(
I stopped playing AC since some time and then came Valhalla which I now really enjoyed playing.

I hope they makes such single players in future and not only concentrate on online universe.

havent touched AC since revelations (did not really play that one either) because they never do proper discounts, its always the same discount that is still way too high if you want everything, dlc etc and its been that same price on discounts for years.

so I did not buy it idk 4 years ago? for that price and I wont buy it for that price now.

I finished Dishonor, Dishonored 2, Titanfall 2 and Prey in the last three weeks. Single player gems made in 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017... Fast forward to 2021 and AAA gaming industry is completely plagued with mindless broken mess of a single player games games and gaming as a service crime. Gaming industry is turning into shit giving us less and less reason for buying new dGPUs :(

Playing Valhalla now and loving it but i will not play a multiplayer version that's for sure...thanks Rockstar.

Yeah i second that, Stop buying and they either backpedal or sellout to MS ( or alike ) HAHAHA.

Rockstar ?.

That way it will be easier for them to keep milking their customers. Sell them more cosmetics and solutions to the problems the developers have artificial injected in all these live services games.

Well, Seeing what they turned Ghost Recon into....

RIP Assassin's Creed. You had a good run.

"next"? The last three have been crap, and not even really AC games. 2 and Brotherhood are still by far the best, followed by Black Flag and Rogue (which is basically a re-make of Black Flag from a Templar viewpoint). Syndicate is fun - but it takes too damn long to actually kill someone.

I also like this assassin's creed games, also unity. From the last 3 I played only assassins creed odyssey, actually this is not bad game, but this is not assassin's creed game for me. They can make their RPG implementations, but I want true assassin's creed game like the old good days.

My favorite is 2, but I also liked the odyssey, the story was very compelling for me.

Rockstar ?.
Amazon game streaming service already has dedicated Ubi "channel" for $15 a month. If they were to sell out to anyone it would probably be Amazon.

I only played the first one through, then the second a bit and just got bored. More than a decade later they are still releasing a new game every two years... and i'm still tired of that franchise without actually playing any of the modern titles.

MS was a example due to what happened with Bethesda Softworks.

Well if they did UBI be 100% dead to me HA.

Well, I haven't bought a Ubisoft game since 2018, and haven't bought an Assassin's Creed game since 2015. That won't change anytime soon.

I mean they've been making the same game for the last 6+ years, they're all boring sandboxes with little to none of the charm from the first three games or the wild adventures of 4. Worst of all, they're boring. Same issue with the far cry games.

Going always online was going to come eventually, they'res too much money to soak up from "le epic gamers" willing to dump hundreds into virtual assets.

They will make Valhalla like GTA 5 or RDR 2 and completely forget about the single player game.

I have no problem with them doing this, as long as it does NOT mean they won't be doing more single player AC games. I would love a sequel to AC Odyssey, which I've just about finished. Imagine it with UE5 engine, it already looks gorgeous.

I despise online gaming becuase of the rampant cheating, and just how many scumbags their are in these games. The only time I've done online is for Diablo 3 and I hated it and I hated greater rifts. If people weren't such d!ckheads it would be far more enjoyable. I'm not competitive, I don't to do PvP crap, I like to take my time and explore every region, and do every side quest.

UE any engine i have pretty much disliked so i hope not. Only one i was able to get in to was Bioshock and that was all for the story. Dam game engine never feels right to me.

Am I the only one to see potential in an AC MMO ? WOW in various historical contexts? Sign me up

All they need to do is make their maps instanced and chop them up into nice bits of farm that you somehow need, they already had the MTX, boosts, etc in place.

Dunno, aren't MMO's history for a while now?
