Hi, I know this question must have been asked several times already but would it be worth upgrading to a 1080 if I have a 970 SLI?

The two 970s I have are the Gigabyte G1 Gaming and if I was to upgrade I was going to go for the 1080 G1 Gaming or the Xtreme Gaming.

What do you guys think?

SLI 970's on 1080p.. lol!

Not sure if it is an FPS improvement or not, but I would get it for simplicity and power use sake personally. If I was you, I would look into upgrading your monitor and then your GPU. ;)

@1080 = No

But if you plan on going 1440p or 4k = yes.

Alternatively you can save yourself so cash and get a 1070 and OC that to 1080 speeds, the 1070 is 80% 1080 as they say. a slight overclock would see it perform better than a stock 1080

Seriously I don't understand what the big thing is against 1080p, it's absolutely fine and besides I already upgraded my monitor a few months back to 144hz g-sync. And yes it's still a 1080p. I much prefer to have higher FPS versus higher resolution. Besides, there's always DSR which I use with some games already.

Edit: Updated specs

What they saying is 1 970 should be enough for 1080p, and 2 970's is just over kill.

1080 is just not worth the price for 1080p, although personally if i can get that performance for a much better price ( looking at you AMD ) i would. As you say DSR and such higher AA settings.

EDIT: Lets face it running 2 970's the performance cannot be all that bad. Good enough to say you could wait 6 month see what the prices are like then and if AMD have there stuff released.

Don't be giving in tot he itch :).

Exactly ^^....

I would wait until the 1080 Ti comes out and AMD's high end offerings. This should settle the market/pricing a bit. Clearly with 970s you don't have a NEED right now. As I said, I would buy a 2560x1440 monitor and see how that fits you with the 970s for a time. Chances are, you may run out of vRAM in some titles, at which point, I would sell those off and grab a 1080/1080ti or w/e AMD has out at the time.

Hmm that's what I thought, though I already bought a new monitor and it was quite expensive so I don't think I will be switching to higher than native 1080p for a while. I use DSR to up the resolution, though I suspect it's still very different from having a monitor that actually support higher resolution.

Well I guess I'll wait and see how the 1080 ti turns out.

well then they are all wrong now arent they?

you're even replying to his point about 144hz... if a single 970 handles a game at 1080p with only 80fps, then a single 970 is not enough for high refresh monitors, why is this such a hard concept to so many people?

in theoretical land excluding cpu bottlenecks, 4k is four times as demanding as 1080p, so if a game is 30fps at 4k on GPU123, it would also be 120fps at 1080p, it's literally the same exact thing yet people will go on about how this GPU123 has no use at 1080p & total use at 4k (of course there are diminishing returns past 60, but some people strongly stand by their 120)

It's up to you but IMO it's too much for just a single 1080P display, i am going with the 1070 and buying a 1440P 144hz display to go with it.

Well of course if you only game at 60 fps with 2 970s then yes, in that case I would agree that it's overkill but like kn00tcn said, if you have a 144hz like me, I like to go higher than 60fps, possibly to 144, though usually 100-120 is fine to me.

You got to 4GHz on that CPU yet?
No I haven't looked in Overclocking yet, though I might to 4GHz. Seems to be a good spot. I'll most likely look into it next week when I have time.

However. Why not upgrade to sli 1080's ? I don't think you lack the money

Actually two 1080s would be way too expensive for me. I'm not a millionaire unfortunately, I do have limits. Even 900$ (at least in canadian dollars) is pretty steep. But yes I'll just keep what I have right now and I'll just check back later down the line when they have the 1080 ti or maybe just skip that generation of gpus altogether.

Not at all, even a single 970 is barely holding on at 1080p/60

In 2015 they already started falling apart in many games, and we're nearly in 2017 now. The 970 ages fast. And when you put two together, they age even faster because of VRAM.

Regardless, 1080p doesn't push hard on VRAM so keep the two 970's for another 6 months.

spend your money on a watercooler, could also be an AIO watercooler and start playing with some clocks on that unlocked i5 sir, will be better than wasting your money on a new graphics card....

I had two MSI 970's in SLI using them on 3440x1440 I was really pleased with the performance but in games that don't support SLI and other games that require more than 3.5GB to run well on very high settings I had issues and that is why I've replaced them with my very good Palit GR 1080 :D . Pricewise the 10 series is well overpriced so if I was you I would wait till the prices come down or even better the next gen of VGA's come out.

Yeah thanks but no thanks, everybody has their trusted brands they go with, I've had Gigabyte mobos and gpus ever since my first rig. I remember trying out an Asus board at one point, easily one of the worst experience I've had with a computer component. I'm not saying Asus isn't good, I only had a terrible experience with them.

I would wait a little longer if I was you, just see what happens with high end AMD GPU's, I'd give it 2-3 months before I buy anything, I myself am waiting for AMD's high end to see if it can beat a 1080 ti overclocked max on both (on air avg overclock w.e that ends up being for both cards), also you really need to invest in a high refresh monitor whether 1080p or 1440p, it changes gaming for the better.
