USB dongle thingamajig

Hello all,

My bosses computer seems to really dislike wireless mice with the little usb dongle thingamajig. It acts really erratic and jumpy, even with a brand new mouse. The mouse pointer lags out all over the screen.

What could be causing this?

Interference! Also my Logitech K400 mouse cursor lags when it's low on battery.

List the mouse as some of the cheapo ones never work right especially the ones you can buy from places like tesco

That's my first thought. Ensure as much separation between other electronics and the mouse and dongle as possible (but not between the mouse and dongle - the closer the better there). If the room if full of fluorescent lights, turn them off and see what happens. Having the case and dongle stuffed in a metal desk does not help either. Well, it helps with interference but it attenuates the RF signal between the mouse and dongle and a weak signal there interfere with the mouse.

Buy quality products, place the receiver in LOS (line of sight) and try again.

6 different makes and models? I don't believe the mice are the problem. It's either down to crappy interference between the dongle and the mouse, or a seriously strange surface.

Are you using them on top of a damn microwave? No one else has these issues so sounds like some form of weird interference.

1) Try using the mouse right next to the USB dongle. If it doesn't do it, buy a male/female USB extension cable to move the USB dongle to a location that is right next to where the mouse would be used normally.
2) Try using a different USB port on the system.
3) Try using the mouse/USB dongle on a different system.
4) Replace the batteries with new--let it charge at least 12 hours before disconnecting it from the charger.
5) Verify the batteries are (type and voltage) what the manual says they should be.
6) Try a wired mouse with the system to see if the behavior is the same.
7) Try different surfaces (a book, newspaper, magazine, piece of paper, etc.).

I'd pick up a usb extension cable and put the receiver as close to the mouse as possible. It sounds like interference.

Just, as a test, move the mouse next to the dongle. No need for an extension cable to see if distance is the problem.

If the case supports a front panel USB port, I might try that.

I know it's not really solving your problem, but why not just use a wired mouse? I dislike wireless things for exactly these reasons. Wired is always better.

a usb extension cable should improve things two ways.. move the dongle further away from the PC which may be causing interference problems and move it closer to the mouse creating a stronger signal.. actually three things.. direct line sight will be there as well..

my not exactly cheap mouse comes with one.. i dont need it but its there if i do..
