Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the second game add-on for the year's highest rated multiplatform game, Portal 2, is in development and targeted for release early next year.

This major update will feature an easy-to-use in-game map editor that will let users design, build and share their own single-player and co-op test chambers with the community, who will be able to view, play and vote on them with a simple click.

Portal 2 was released April 19, and currently holds a Metacritic score of 95%, making it the top-rated multiplatform game of 2011. Its first content update, "Peer Review", came out two weeks ago.

A hilariously mind-bending adventure that challenges you to use wits over weaponry in a funhouse of diabolical science, Portal 2 features expansive single and cooperative multiplayer game modes. That is awesome, hopefully it's not crazy complicated, allowing the community to make maps could add huge replay value if we can make something meaningful.

This sounds great and I'll bet it will be free, too. :)

I expect the resulting maps will be exactly that! Like those track nations levels...lol, mind boggling.

Complicated levels are what Portal is all about. But I mean not extremely complicated to put together a map, like Garys mod, people who sit down and take many a hours t understand it can use it great, but it's not at all easy to sit down and use.

Awesome. This might be a great reason to buy Portal 2 now. I love making my own maps for various things. I just don't like if they are too complicated. For example Stunts, Crashday and Re-Volt had awesome track/map editors. Super easy, yet super fun.

This is pretty stellar news. Valve is supposedly completely overhauling all of their mod tools for ease of use. I'd totally try to port all of the original Portal maps to Portal 2.

Good idea :D Otherwise WYSIWYG editors are my favorite. You just pick objects and place them on a surface. Repeate the process till you're done. I don't like XYZ axis exitors because i just never got hang of them no matter how hard i tried. Only thing that i managed was to hack some doors in TES:Morrowind and changed some lighting in UnrealEd. And that was it.

This is awesome I hope people make some hard ones as Portal and Portal 2 was easy for me.

hopefully the editor is simple and easy to use.

Every source engine game should have an in-game map editor. I can't understand Hammer at all!

^ agreed

those screenshots look like the editor will be fairly easy to use. wish they'd make one for HL2 and such like that as well. or at least for CS:S, L4D, and TF2

I learned to use Hammer with ease, it's just happens to be a little bit like steam, ****.
But Portal really needed it's own editor, there was no reason to not have one, really. I might use it for the ease then modify the maps a bit further in Hammer. Looking forward to it. As Delta said they needed better challenges. In fact my review of Portal 2 was always that it was a good movie.

Anyone who hasn't installed Portal Pro should definitely check it out.
A well written mod with decent Portal (one) challenges.
