check jumpers on all devices on that channel, also check the hdd mode in bios. I saw this with two ide devices on the same channel with the jumpers messed up. Both devices names were essentially random characters. Use master/slave jumper settings, not cs.

i've had that problem (not on 7 though) and it usually amounted to cables not being plugged in properly

although i have had another weird thing of when i use alot of different drives altogether it will say weird letters in the bios (but it usually says the drive is corrupted and needs formating

btw is it your bootdrive?
and is the drive sata or parallel ata?

I had a Seagate drive in my notebook that was dying, and it would do exactly this. Sometimes it would boot normal, other times it would boot with a corrupted name in BIOS, other times not at all. It died about a month after it first started.

Have you run HD Tune?

it is a IDE (PATA) drive and no it is not my boot drive just an extra storage drive but i found out the problem it was the IDE cable its self must of happened last time i did a big clean out of dust and rehidding of the wires it got pinched in the back by the back panel and exposed some of the wires in the cable and was shorting or something changed the cable and hide it differently so that won't happen again and now its working normally

thxs everybody for the help
