What are some of your PC building pet peeves?

I'm going to say cable manangment, but only because I've only built one rig (before the one I'm building now anyway) and didn't know much about how the choice of case impacts the ability to hide all the cables, lol. On the plus side, I did get myself a modular PSU for that first build...so the mess wasn't too bad lol :D

DOA parts. Especially after waiting a few weeks so 'they can complete the shipment and send it all at once'.

GIEF me my CFL god damn it (had this whole weekend to build and OC... gone to waste, delivery tomorrow :D)

Haha yeah that's usually the most telling thing about how many builds a person's done. Then again, many people just don't care.

Ah NO not exactly a good idea to use plastic coated wire ties to hold power cables in place I've seen PC's catch on fire using those they start acting like a mini transformer better to use something like this

i bought a pack of those on amazon a while back. Just wish I could find them now... in the meantime, wireclippers will have to do :p

Velcro ties are nice

Most of the case issues mentioned go away witha decent quality case and ye, these are available as low as $70. We used to have a list or various case manufacturer's / models that we'd give to folks to choose from when they wanted a new box. Now I just say, pick any Phanteks case except the tall skinny one. Velcro ties, screws box, superb fans, great cooling and featires. We will consider other options but.

Things I hate still.....

. . . why don't storage racks have built in SATA power / ports ?
. . . why not GFX card powe connectors on short side of card ?
. . . why not one cable from MoBo to all case connectors ? Don't have to use them all
. . . lack of built in case lighting like the Luxe that serves to highlight and accent that build
. . . all lighting that's caters to "putting on a laser light show" instead of highlighting the build components, tubing, fittings etc.
. . . lack of widespread use of built in case mountings for pumps, rads, resevoirs, etc.

Lol, yes I have not been building computers for very long but hopefully I have learned a thing or two for this next one...fingers crossed

If I may add another pet peeve. Though this one isn't related to the actual building process, but it's the way most all PC cases nowdays have no personality, they are all flat and boring looking. Now I'm not saying they have to be gaudy, but at least design them with a *little* creativity. Like, if I wanted a boring-looking box to house my components, I'd just save myself some $$$ and use a fuckin' cardboard box

Kinda looks like you want a prebuilt system instead lol 'insert favorite part here' - the problem being, that the more you prefit on a case, the more narrow your choice of 'favorite parts' that will fit ;)

Always bothered me that case maker or motherboard maker that i have have had never came with ram support, when a system being built it's a none issue but later in life adding or problem hunting require taking out or inserting memory sticks.

For many years i been using a block or 2 of foam that has a single sticky side that you just stick to the case so when the rams pushed in it stops the motherboard from bending.

So you place it behind between the back of the motherboard and the case ?

The most pushinh i ever done when i was screwing the dark rock 3 pro on my new motherboard...it almost broke.

They are out in the wild....

My AsRock is facing the side of the case, it was Asus boards that had the ones facing the bezel.

i guess this is my point
I wish they'd just settle on a standard,

a standard of "common usage" ive never had a moBo that didnt require me to bend the USB 3.0 cable to make it work better for the build wiring aesthetic. i just wish (like HDD screws, or any other standard ) that it would be something included in cases, or MobOs boxes. it would be something easily manufactured for cheap, and shouldnt add too much to a retail price, id gladly pay $0.50 for the adapter to be included.

better to have one left over than 1 too few, or in other words...

Better to have and not need it, than to need it and not have it :)

One of my peeves is screw holes that are either tapped only half way, or worse, at an angle such that screwing the screw in either strips threads or would pull everything out of alignment.

Only thing I really hate is that after 20 years of building these things I still think I can move that one dangling cable without buzzing my knuckles on a spinning fan.

True statement is true

Asus quick connect is OK
SB_4.jpg

I dont like it, i still direct connect them.

My pet peeve, those who dont breadboard their rig before putting into a case to verify everything posts/runs correctly.

Worn threads on motherboard screws...

Even worse is when you think the screw is coming undone but instead it's the whole screw and standoff coming out as one

This is rage inducing.

Studs should be torqued, board screws shouldnt be...

Forgetting to put in the I/O shield, and having mismatched ram sticks. Also, for some reason I'm very sensitive to high pitched noises, so I, according to my brother, needlessly replaced our CPU fan.

You might want to tell that to HP or Acer and Compaq because they're the ones I have it happen to me the most

Yeah, not possible. There are no DC transformer because DC physically can't create a current in another wire in a transformer. So using wire ties is perfectly safe.

I use zip ties myself, not bread ties

well this is more about ongoing maintainence so dont be too harsh on me.. ahh well go ahead then , lemme have it :D

bottom filters you need to pull out from the back to clean them. yup i love pulling my pc out of its cubbyhole with all its tangled cables and such to clean a filter.

OTOH i do love my NZXT H2 front fans being hot swappable, just open the front door and pull the tabs for the 2 fans and out they come (no connectors to unplug either) even while pc is on. snap em back when done. yeah this part is off topic but i still love that feature. makes up for that rear loading filter. almost.

me, i dunno there's something that i can't explain before closing the case i need to recheck everything. sometimes i unplug then plug in again before i finally close the case
