Hello,
The discussion we had in the topic made me think more about this issue and pushed to create this topic.|
There were those kinds of topics on reddit and probably on this forum already but let's get back to the issue.
This topic is supposed to sum up the "subjecitve feelings" of customers having a specific card.
I would like you to share your thoughts on coil whine of your current or previous GPUs, but only those you owned or had witnessed personally. You can say how vulnerable to coil whine you are and point the coil whine you've experienced on the scale 0-10. 0=absolutely no coil whine. 10=unbearable whine.
I personally am VERY vulnerable and sensitive to coil whine, it bothers me A LOT.
1. I had 2x ASUS GeForce RTX 3060 Ti DUAL OC and both of them buzzed like crazy. I thought the first one was terrible (8/10), so I returned it. The second card proved me I was wrong and it buzzed even more (9/10). This one was also returned.
2. Then I changed into the team red and ordered Gigabyte Radeon RX 6700 XT EAGLE , It buzzed aswell, but it was on the quiter side of the spectrum (5/10).
3. 6700xt got returned and replaced by Gigabyte Radeon RX 6750 XT GAMING OC and it also whined. It was not THAT badly bothering my fiancee(4/10) as the 3 first options, as the PC was for her. I can say that after ~2 months the whining frequency lowered to even more acceptable level(3/10)
4. In the meantime I got RTX 4070 Gainward Phoenix and this one was perfection. Absolutely no coil noise at all. (0/10)
5. Gigabyte Radeon RX 6600 EAGLE - this one buzzed very similarly to number 3. RX 6750 XT. (4/10)
6. Had a chance to test 6750 XT by Sapphire and it buzzed very much like a number 2. Gigabyte Eagle RX 6700 XT.
All these cards were tested on multiple PSUs with no noise change between different PSU.

What is your experience with whining coils?

Never had one. My GPUs since 2009:

Sapphire HD 4850
XFX HD 5770
Sapphire R7 260X
Sapphire RX 570
Gigabyte GTX 1660 ti
Asus RTX 3060 ti

I've had whine caused by interference in other electronics and was slightly annoyed enough to fix it, so I guess I'd rate me a 5 on sensitivity to it.

My current MI25 makes a tiny bit of noise at high FPS (200+), otherwise it's silent.

Worst one by far had to be one of my GTX 285's you could clearly hear it even from the other side of the room. Luckily that card was just for benching so I didn't have to suffer that for long.

For me it has always been a lottery although I really haven't had a card that I would really call bad since 2013.

The issue is brand agnostic and can even be worse on higher end cards with high end PCB

My Gigabyte gaming OC 4090 has almost 0 but the TUF and Suprim 4090 I had access to were both pretty bad

My Sapphire Pulse 6700XT has almost 0

My EVGA FTW3 3080ti has almost 0

My Red devil 5700Xt had almost 0

My Asus Strix 2080ti had very mild coil whine.

My Titan Xp had moderate coil whine although you couldn't hear it over the fan.

Neither of my EVGA 1080ti had any noticeable coil whine

Neither of my EVGA FE 1080s had coil whine

My EVGA Classified 980ti did not have any coil whine

Neither of my Gaming X 970s had any coil whine

My Asus DC II 290x had no coil whine

Both my Sapphire 7970 had terrible coil whine and really the only cards I capped to 60FPS as much as I could. This is when I was told by Sapphire coil whine is not a defect regardless of how terrible it is.

My powercolor 6850 had no coil whine but died after 3 months.

My Sapphire 7950 did not have coil whine but is only 1 of two cards that ever died on me

My EVGA 680 superclocked and Msi lighting 680 did not have coil whine.

Besides these I have at least 2-3 hours of hands on with in the range of 50 more cards and honestly bad coil whine has been pretty rare. I only recommended like 2 cards be returned.

I had a loud 980Ti - I think it was an EVGA. Swapped it out and no issue with the second one, or its SLI twin.

There were some older cards that would squeal in FurMark or other benchmarks, but only at really low resolution so they were running 300+ FPS, which you'd never see in games back then. Not really an issue.

Guess I've been lucky given how many cards I've had over the years.

My EVGA 1070 SC has noticable coil whine (and leaks noise over its HDMI output too), though it's workable. My Inno3D 4080 X3 whines very little even with the case open. (though it's in for repairs due to insane hotspot temps right now, so that's a thing...)

For what it's worth: I can still hear CRT whine pretty well (~16KHz?), and hear many USB/battery chargers whine/beep/buzz from a few meters away as well.

That's very interesting. I observe the same thing for myself. The high pitch noises generally bother me a lot. I hear squeeking of some laptop chargers. Once I had a problem with very VERY high pitch noise in my room that was audible when my PC was turned on. A year after I noticed it i identified the reason of it was... a keyboard RGB lighting... When i turned it off I was met with extremely pleasant silence.

Well, GPUs don't whine. Coils do. So your question doesn't make sense.

I'm not 100% but think it was radeon 1600xt.
I could tell the FPS from the sound. :D
Oh and it died the same day.
I was overclocking and running combustor.
So know its "normal" on some cards but I hate it.
Every time I hear it I think the card is about to die coil whine PTSD I guess. :D

Only owned 1 card that had some coil whine and it was my EVGA GTX 1070 FTW ACX 3.0.
Luckily it was only whining when the fans were spinning so basically only when gaming, it wasn't that bad + I use a headset anyway so I kept the card. 'it did lower its re sale value tho.. when I sold it later'

My current Asus TuF 3060 Ti is completely silent even when I'm benchmarking with my usual 73 FPS cap disabled. '75 Hz monitor'

In the other hand I did have a low pitched whiny 650W MWE Gold Cooler Master PSU years ago that whined even when my PC was off so I had to completely power off my system every night else I could hear that damn thing even in my bed.. 'That crap died on me in 2 years and the r/etailer gave me back my money at least'
To me that was a lot more annoying than my GTX 1070.

The quietest 6000 cards are the As Rock variants and they are also cool and cheaper than everything else too.

The ASUS RTX 3060 in the Zephrus G14 had lots of fan noise depending on GPU usage. I would prefer to play with headphones when gaming on it.

Well the Tinnitus I have, it is moot point… (lol?)
but I can hear the whine from the computer when off, when I awake in middle of night, so I just completely turn off the system (power supply switch when sleeping… )
Indicator lights are annoying too… wall warts, monitor lights, Lan port lights when sleeping… (on those that can’t turn off use electrical tape/black out tape…

5700XT Pulse OC louder than anything else i've ever heard... screeching like hell even through thick closed back headsets with pleather ear cushions.
4090 AMP Extreme Airo anything beyond ~120 FPS was really annoying and audible from meters away. (card was on a testbench but still...)
6700XT Challenger OC Dual Fan really loud and high pitched coil whine under any load scenario.
6950XT MBA awful Coilwhine at high framerates that got even worse after repasting the atrocious POS heatsink that was able to trigger thermal shutdowns at stock settings with 100% fan speed. (contact was really bad even with paste and the Hotspot Delta was ~45°C)
6900XT Aorus Master low almost grinding noise under high current loads.
3080 FTW3 Ultra loud and high pitched coilwhine... "glad" the card died after a couple months.
my other cards are either not enough used to remember or acceptable (like my 4090 GXT which has barely any coilwhine)

Current 3070Ti is silent outside of fans.

It's a luck of the draw (with better luck when you use manufacturers that don't cheap out)

Generally speaking the higher the power consumption the worse the whine.

not sure this is true, my 7900 xt pulling 400 watts (heavy OC) is dead silent. and i set fans to 61% regardless of temp when not at zero rpm.

I think i got pretty lucky on this card, though I did see a lot of reviews of the powercolor hellhound 7900 xt saying it had coil whine issues on a lot of those, but when i looked at several reviews for merc none. i think some companies do build better than others, but i also know there is some randomness to it too.

TBH most of my coil whine was with shittier PSUs.

Nobody take offense to that, please, but when I started way overpowering systems with beastly PSUs, coil whine was non-existant.

yep I hear this solves it for a lot of people when i read reviews on it all earlier this year. even people on Amazon reviews saying a PSU upgrade fixed it for them.

I have only had coil whine with one GPU and that was a Gigabyte RTX2060 Super and that was only slightly audible above my case fans so I just increased the case fans speed until I couldn't hear the coil whine any longer

- Gigabyte GTS 450 was quiet but just horrible otherwise
- Sapphire HD 4890 had loud whine
- MSI GTX 760 was quiet but cooked it's VRMs
- MSI GTX 770 had noticeable whine but not that loud
- Reference GTX 1080 had minor whine at really high FPS
- ASUS TUF RTX 3080 has slight whine, when fans ramp up it's not noticeable

I've had PSUs whine like crazy, Corsair's cheap PSU whined and Seasonic's 520W made whirring noise. Current budget model from Seasonic (B12 BC-850) has fan that resonates at certain speed, like howling wheel bearing
