What SSDs use SLC or MLC

You really shouldn't be using a laptop for video surveillance purposes. However, if you must, the following drives are your best options;
There are many options to choose from, if you know where to look;
I don't know if they are MLC but they are in the same class and *a lot* cheaper: Micron 5400 Max 1.92 TB 2.5"

However, an older thin client such as the HP t630 may be better than a laptop for OP's purposes and those accept M.2 SATA SSDs, such as the Micron 5300 Pro 1.92 TB M.2

Both of those are TLC. The OP wanted SLC or MLC.
If OP really insists on going SLC/MLC then the Swissbit drives I linked to earlier could be a good option but they are accordingly much more expensive than the Micron enterprise drives.

An SSD for CCTV is a little.....excessive?

Unless your hooking up a DSLR as a CCTV camera most CCTV systems are currently moving over towards H.265 and even with decent frame rate and up to 4K resolution most cameras are happy with around 4Mbps per camera for respectible footage capture.
I am using the computer for other things also.

I thought SLC or MLC had much more writes to them than current TLC drives. But I guess TLC have gotten much better over time.

The SSD will be used more like a cache stystem put away in the closet, 4 bay for now.

They do. MLC is still better than even the best TLC.

This is true, but MLC still wins the durability race by a considerable margin. This listings I linked earlier are specifically designed with high write loads in mind. They are pricey, but are well suited for your use-case-scenario.
