I find this news sad actually.
While their most recent game is downright terrible, those earlier point-and-click adventures are really great. At least the next Deponia is still being worked on by a contracted studio.
Yeah. One game failed. But now, they won't even have the chance to make things right with another one.

What happens to that other Tolkien game they already have a license for?

No one here can answer that definitively since those terms would be subject to the contract they signed with the copyright holder. No TPU participant has access to those legal documents.

My presumption is that those game rights revert back to the copyright owner to be considered for assignment elsewhere.

For sure the LotR lawyers included a clause for these types of situations. My guess is that LotR attorneys are smarter than Daedelic attorneys.

There's also the issue of German government support money they had secured for the second Tolkien game. Will be interesting to see where that ends up.

Of course you could also speculate that either the license or the money had contract clauses that let the other party pull the plug, respectively.
