No idea what brand that PSU is, but if it isn't a name brand with a good OEM I do not recommend an R9 Fury in any way shape form or fashion.

This.

Otherwise i would recommend the Fury, they are great cards, though not the XFX for 250, those seem to all have bad coil whine, but the sapphire they have for 275 is a good card, and (in my opinion) worth the extra over the xfx, or 1060's/480's

If it weren't for Freesync, I'd have probably ordered a 1060 already, but been looking at the 1070 the last few days, I will have the spare money for it soon and it'd last longer. I was sort of wanting to stay away from the RX480 as it's a weaker card than I was initially wanting to buy (1060). Also my PSU is an Aerocool 700W PSU, not sure it's too good, I was charged 65 for mine but I see they're going for around 50.

If not using Freesync/GSync isn't going to be an issue I'll definitely go with an Nvidia card. Some people say it'll be an issue some people don't, even if AMD bring out the 490, if it's the same price as the 1070 I'll buy that, as I'm considering buying a 1070 now anyway so price isn't that much of an issue.

If price is really not an issue, take Palit Super Jetstream GTX 1070. If you want very good performance at reasonable price, go for Sapphire Nitro+ RX480 8GB.
Since you have 1080p monitor, I would recommend RX 480 8GB. You'll save significant amount of money and you'll be able to max out every single game on the market, not only now but also in the near future.

I was just looking for graphic cards for my cousin and RX480 8GB and GTX 1060 6GB are priced about the same. RX480 has a bit of an edge with DX12 and Vulkan with 2GB VRAM more, where GTX 1060 has an edge with superior "Fast" V-Sync mode and pre-DX12 games but slightly less VRAM. But to be honest, both are as fast as my GTX 980 and I'm on 4GB VRAM and it's enough for anything I throw at it at 1080p (which frankly is what these cards are designed for anyway).

So, you can basically throw VRAM size out of the equation and just decide between other factors. As for the FreeSync, surely it's nice and it's gaining hugely in popularity, but as I'm using "Fast" V-Sync mode on my GTX 980, I don't feel any need for a monitor based hardware capability. I mean, I have zero mouse lag and zero image tearing paired with framerates that go as high as graphic card can churn them out. If anything convinced me more to stay with NVIDIA it has been this Fast V-Sync mode out of all the fancy crap NVIDIA offers. Funny how things work, isn't it?

There is a reason why AMD started increasing the amount of VRAM on their cards starting with the R9 290X, forcing Nvidia to follow suit starting with the 980Ti. Increasingly, games and applications are using more and more VRAM, and also as more users move to displays with higher resolutions, the amount of dedicated memory is crucial.

Of course, this all depends on the resolution and what games the OP will be using.
For myself I wound up buying the Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 8GB, as the Fury was priced much higher at the time, but if I had seen a $250 price on a new R9 Fury, I would have had a very tough decision between that and a RX 480 8GB since I run only 1080p.

What good is 8GB of VRAM when GPU is not capable of shading all the pixels you demaned from it? Considering 4GB were introduced with GTX 970/980 era cards and GTX 1060 and RX480 are GPU wise equally capable, you're frankly only benefiting from highly specific scenarios.

And when you do demand that kind of amount of textures to be handled by a graphic card, chances are, game is already too demanding for it from GPU perspective.

I think I'm going to go for the 1070, just hopeful that Freesync isn't completely necessary. if there's no news of a new AMD card within the next month or so, I will definitely order the 1070. maybe even
The 1080 if I have the spare money for it. thanks for the advice guys.

At this point, the Pascal line is about to be obsoleted by the Volta and Vega with it's ability to scale with the new API's, as Pascal was just an afterthought, a continuation of Maxwell as you can see from this older roadmap:

It really does not make sense to buy a Paxwell card right now when the prices are due to drop precipitously when these new architectures are released.
There will be a Fire Sale of these cards both used and even new, as users look to purchase the latest and greatest, and vendors look to clear old stock.
Just wait for now, then decide.

No matter what you say, GTX1070 / 1080 kick ass!!! And I know it because I own one...:p

You may be sad you bought a RX480 for yourself.

Of course prices always drop with release of new cards. My GTX 980 was around 650€ new. After release of GTX 1060 and RX480 it was instantly devalued in half because those deliver about the same performance at half the price. What makes you think it'll be any different when Vega and Volta are released, assuming they'll target same segment? If trend continues, Volta replacement of GTX 1080 should be a GTX 2060. Same how GTX 1060 replaced GTX 980 in terms of performance. It's how it is and has been since I can remember in a post 3dfx era.

My post was not directed at you.
What I was trying to convey to the OP is that after waiting for Vega and weighing the performance and options, he still wants the 1070, that it will likely be much cheaper, especially the used cards.
A used 1070 will only be a few months old and if it's EVGA, it still will be under the 3 year warranty.
I'm not sad about the Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 8GB I purchased, in fact I hit the Silicon Lottery and am able to achieve 1466Mhz. This card only cost me $280 with Free Shipping, and is now on sale for $250, this is by far the best price to performance value that has ever been for a graphics card.

Been looking at 1070's today, and I've come across this: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/giga...0d5-8gd-gx-186-gi.html?campaign=affiliate/tag which is a Gigabyte GTX1060, and a free gold rated Gigabyte 750W PSU. As I need to upgrade my PSU, this may be a good idea. It comes to £430. The PSU at this particular store sells for £110, making the GPU around £320 which is very cheap for a GTX1070. Is this a good PSU, and is this a good deal as I thought it was pretty good. It's a shame I might end up wasting the Freesync. I'll give it a little while still to see what AMD come out with. I didn't think buying a GPU would be such a big decision

which is a Gigabyte GTX1070

Personally I wouldn't buy a Founders Edition, they are more expensive usually and has a blower type cooler which means it will run hotter compared to other non-FE cards.

hotter being a relative term. my 1080 strix at 100% load (folding) sits at ~60c so even 20% hotter is still more than acceptable. the main reason i didn't go with a founders card is the blower fans are louder and it was more expensive than the strix. for the price of the bundle, its well worth considering.

Hello, I've recently bought a PC without a GPU, as I knew this would be the last item I buy, but I'm stuck as to which GPU to buy.

I was originally going to go with the 6GB GTX1060, but the monitor I'm going to buy has AMD Freesync so I started looking at AMD cards and came across the 480 8GB and the R9 fury. I don't really know too much about these cards and I'm not sure what to get. The monitor I'm getting is only 1080p 60Hz. (http://tinyurl.com/hwo49wh) It's only 24'' as I don't have the space on my desk for a bigger one, as my TV is also on my desk. I also tend to go with Samsung for displays which is why I made that decision, it does also feature a gaming mode.

I won't be a hardcore PC gamer as I still play console, but I want my PC to be able to play the latest games, as I will be getting the occasional few for my PC.

My current PC specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel i5 6600K Quad Core Processor
RAM: 16GB DDR4 2300Mhz RAM
Motherboard: Gigabyte H110M-S2H (I don't plan on overclocking anything just yet, I'll upgrade my motherboard when I do decide to!)
PSU: 700W Integrator 80+ Rated Bronze
Storage: 1TB Standard HDD (Buying an SSD very soon)

My main concern with getting a Nvidia card is that screen tearing will occur. I've already ordered the monitor, I didn't really look into AMD Freesync/GSync etc before I ordered it as I didn't think it'd matter, but I've since looked it up and i'm a little hesitant to get a GTX1060 6GB now.

The R9 Fury is currently only £250 on overclockers.co.uk which is around the same price as the GTX1060. Will my system support this card, and is it the better option considering everything above, as the age of the card and the inferior amount of VRAM is putting me off slightly. It's my first PC so I'm new to this stuff. Thank you

Rx480 < GTX1070

easy as that; if money isn´t an issue; why not get an 1080 in SLI with a brand new 4K screen?

My point here is that you are willing to spend premium on something that very well may be common in a very short amount of time.
Will you really be happy in 2-3months when you see the same card at half the pricing?

Doesn´t matter if you can bankroll it; it just seems sad.
If you made the same post 3months ago with your bankroll taken into account, a 1070 would´ve been a more valid point.

As it stands, a Rx470 4GB to span the bridge to awesomeness next summer seems wiser(or something 2nd hand); or a Rx480 if you plan to stick with it for another 1,5years-years. (This is what I did!)

4K IPS 100Hz screens when they will be available; will need a monster GPU to feed it.
A 1070 RIGHT NOW is not powerfull enough to run 4K high mode; what will it be in 2years?

Add DX12 to that equation; and things shift even more. (Not to mention freesync)

btw

http://www.futuremark.com/hardware/gpu

Supposedly, the 1060 was inititally 6-10% faster, but I dont see that reflected in futuremark

I have this nagging feeling that in 1,5years, the 480 will be closer in performance to the 1070 than it is to the 1060

Save your trouble and wories for something else and buy the RX 480 and move on.

As you pointed out, you plan to OC, so a good board ( probably with CFX) is coming your way and you can use it to your advantage to get a nothet 480 or even 490 ( remember, AMD alows mix and match on CFX, as long as they are in same family chip, Polaris).

The way things are, there is new tech always coming out, and you will be confused as to what to buy. Just get what you need and be done with it as fast as possible.

No matter what you say, GTX1070 / 1080 kick ass!!! And I know it because I own one...:p

You may be sad you bought a RX480 for yourself.

After Vega is released and you see the benchmarks from all over the Web, perhaps you can offer the OP a dealie on your used GTX 1070?

Well, you noted you won't be a hardcore gamer, and all the cards mentioned will run the latest games easily (with detail tweaks where necessary). So if I were you I'd get the RX480 and a solid Freesync monitor. A PSU change is necessary if it's a low end no-name unit, no matter the card you get. From what I've heard so far Freesync works really well and sorta offsets the lower FPS in games, G-Sync too just more expensive. You won't regret getting any of the cards mentioned, this is just my personal opinion.

Take a GTX 1060/1070 and leave the"joke" behind ))))

Or take a "RZ" 480 and have it for 10 years, haha.
just because is better on vulkan and dx 12 or maybe is it the freecheapsync that make it everyone attractive!

Bullsheet!
