Which upgrade should I go for, a monitor or GPU?

I play ARMA 3 and others which have a CPU intensive engine, so these are the type of games I'm referring to.
Obviously, if you play WoW, or LoL and other low processor games you will be OK.

Negative. Please stick to a topic you know better.

Whoa! I don't mind disagreement, but tell me what you think I said was wrong here.
Telling me I don't understand the subject doesn't help anyone, especially me if I said something wrong.

Umm, yeah. I think I'll stick to investing on a better GPU and monitor first until I decide to play more on games that demand more out of my i3 for the time being.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations and advice guys. :)

Basically you were fine, until you started urging him to upgrade the CPU because of it's supposed non-capabilities.

I can tell you, aithout any equivocation that running an i3-4160 with a 970, that PC plays many different types of games, many with higher cpu intensity, and that another PC with a 970 and a 3770 performs almost exactly the same, literally within a frame or 2.

No way would I even know that he's fine on an i3 unless I had used one. If not, I'd probably give the same recommendation as you. :-)

The OP has stated he is interested in GTA V, and I certainly would not want to play that game on an i3
Developers are notorious for understating system requirements, but this one recommends an i5 or better, as does ARMA 3.

I guess the point is now moot as he has decided to focus on new video card and monitor.

The point was never in contention until someone advised him his Processor may be underpowered.
Look at the title of the thread.

His processor is fine for the DX 9, 10 games he likes, until he has a collision with destiny and finds a game engine that demands more from the CPU.

Sigh. Spoken from lack of experience with this CPU. The system I mentioned above is playing nearly all DX11 games, performing the same as an i7 with same memory and gpu.

So the OP is fine for more than just DX9 or 10 games. Always stick to the focus of what the OP is asking for is the best policy.

Does this clarify the issue.

"It is an i3, therefor it clearly is not sufficient enough for gaming!" I've heard people echoing this way too often. A desktop i3 with HT can handle any game. I certainly wish current software and games would scale better with the amount of cores. But the truth is they don't. Not yet.

Edit: Don't upgrade yet. Wait till you can afford both and the next generation of monitors (HDR) is available.

The vast majority of games are made to run on consoles, and so an i3 is fine, but the i3 will suffer in certain titles. You will find out which titles after you buy them and try to play.

Monitor hands down, your 680 is still a good card and if I was going to get a new card look at a 980 ti as price performance is just awesome now with the prices dropping out of them like a stone.

I understand that, and thanks for clarifying at the earlier part even though it's not really my primary interest. But rest assured one day I will upgrade, just that my CPU is still doing well with my favorite shooters so your advice and suggestions are most appreciated as I at least have a direction for CPU in future.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'll try my best to be patient with my GPU and monitor upgrade.

Between a GTX 1070 and 980 Ti here, the price is very close to each other now, ranging in a tempting 2499 MYR ($610) for the 980 Ti Waterforce Xtreme (Gigabyte) and the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X at 2349 MYR ($570).... :D

@Ungari, Ron handled it very politically and diplomatically just now. I'm not going to, because I am going to give you some advice for the future in advice-seeking threads: Stick to what the OP is asking for, and leave your bias out of it.

But, I thought this site is where people go to for BIAS updates?
