hi everybody,
im in a dire need of help cuz im out of ideas.
this is the issue im having, ill be pc gaming playing cod4,ut3,or wow,and as soon as i start to move i will experience flickering and green dots on my screen, followed by a lock up.i ran 3d marks to see if i can get a stress test and have the same issue, but to much suprise it worked fine.except on the cpu test.for some reason on this test i was seen constant 0-1 fps, which to me dosent make sense.but this problem im having only happens when im running games.im fine when it comes to everything else.any suggestions would be appericated and here are system specs:

MOTHER BOARD:ASUS M3N72-D AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

HD:Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

RAM:OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

CPU:AMD Phenom 9550 Agena 2.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W 65nm Quad-Core Processor

GPU:XFX PVT96GYDSU GeForce 9600 GT XXX Alpha Dog Eddition 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported

PSU:cool master 550w (can get more info if needed)

OS:Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit English 1pk for System Builders DSP OEI DVD - OEM

CASE:XION II XON-101 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply (Not using psu)

I had a friend voip diagnose it he said it sounds like "artifacting" which he said he caused usually by heat.TO me this still dosent make sense. PLEASE HELP SO I CAN SLEEP :(

CPU test is fine, for the speed you are running your cpu at it wont go greater than 2 fps.

You are going to have to provide a little more information though.

How warm is your video card getting? Little obvious here but yes it is overheating or is possibly power supply related.

what other info do you need,i will get you as much as i possible can provide

Basically just the model number of the PSU and a post back of idle/load temps on your video card.

video card is either overheating, dying, or getting insufficient power (least likely of the three)

the CPU test is meant to be 0-1FPS, i only get two FPS on here. if CPU's could run games, we wouldnt need video cards now would we.

CoolerMaster RS-550-ACLY-SLI ATX12V/ EPS12V 550W
and the running temp is betweem 49-51 c

Ok the idle temp seems about right. See if you can get ATITool for its 3D clocks to kick in the load temps.

Also, after looking your 3rd 12V rail is rated for 10a see if using the other PCIe 6pin nets you the same results.

i can use the atitool even if its a nvidia card? and as far as another 6-pin i dont seem to have another one.......or maybe im thinkin of somthing different.

im not a vet a building pc's this is my first, sorry if it takes me a minutie to understand, but the vid card is the 6-pin power i believe, and the mobo is 4,but like i said didnt see another 6-pin in the bunch of wires.

but yes im not reatarted i used static free gloves, and all that good stuff so im not that dumb =P

your video card may have come with a 4 pin molex to 6 pin PCI-E adaptor, you could try that as well.

For future reference double and triple posting is frowned upon, use the edit button and just add to your previous post in the future.

Sorry for not replying sooner. Very interesting that you dont have 2 6 pin PCIe. Per specs from many sites that psu has 2 connectors. Yes, you can atitool with pretty much any video card. Never meant to sound like I was calling you dumb or stupid either. If i did sound like it i am sorry.

its completly fine,i didnt get the feel from you as being dumb,i was just tryin to be as specific as possible, like i said im stuck as far as tryin to figure out whats going on.And im very sorry for triple posting just kind of fustrated and tryin to find out a problem.Any other ideas?

Download ATiTool and run the Scan for Artifacts test, and watch the temperature. Tell us how high it gets.

ok when i try to run the artifact test,i get an error and cant seem to find where its telling me to go,im not 100% familiar with vista but this is what it is saying:"the videocard you selected for overclocking does not seem to be used by windows.Visual testing has been disabled.to fix this,go to display properties, settings and enable the monitor output for the card.

Also,a couple of things i was thinging about, could it have been a issue with not having monitor drivers isntalled?i realized this when i was messing with my setting it came up as "generic monitor" and i found the drivers and installed them.,another possibly i was thinkin the psu i am running is 550w......now (me being an idiot) realized that the card requires atleast a 600w psu on the xfx website.A possible issue? One other thing,i was tryin to see if the driver for the monitor fixed the issue......tried cod4 this morning.....played for about 20 mins then the OS screen(not the abrevation for operating system) blue screen =(.i restarted my pc and check the error log i recieved. And it said my videocard drivers caused the blue screen(guess it was a built in error log with vista?)So i install my vidcard drivers from xfxforce's website. But i was thinkin could it be a processor issue.....maybe that is overheating.....and the tp that was on the hs was incufficent? here are some thoughts of what i was thinking.FEEDBACK PLEASE!

well... 550w is enough for a 9600gt. xfx has rediculous power requirements sometimes, they said my old 6800xt AGP required 500w. Maybe you just got a generic psu? I dunno man

CoolerMaster RS-550-ACLY-SLI ATX12V/ EPS12V 550W
is the psu im using.

I had this same problem, same games and so on. But different card. Uninstall the drivers. Then install the lastest ones. Boom! Went away, but I had to mod by drivers. Cause it's not seeing my card. :(

The RS550 has 550 watts of PEAK power. The PSU is insufficient for what you are running.;)

so you think my problem is steming from the psu?and isnt a issue with my card nor my cpu?

No, but it makes the most sense as a place to start.:ohwell:

grrrrr......i just want to game!
but psu is a soild issue now that im thinkin about it due to,the vid card req,2gb of ocz ram,and a quad core,my specs are above,so what would you suggest for a psu? Also are you thinkin of any other possibilites of what it could be?

I had a similar issue a few weeks back and it was pin pointed to my motherboards chipset. The 9600 GT has been known to have compatibility issues with certain motherboards which cause games to lock up, 3d marks to screw around. I had this issue. trust me. View my old thread here.--- > http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=60742 (read from post #11)

and

In conclusion, certain motherboards cause the 9600 GT to act strange.

well the only way to be certain its your psu and not your vid card, is test in another system. now i would guess its your card but read the dude's post above me, i would guess that will get you the farthest in looking for advice
