Will a i7 cpu survive a fire

I have a PC from a house fire. all the plastic melted but not Boards & HS they did not got that hot . i know everything is no good. i7 in this PC seems to be fine. would you trust it? or toss it.

That's worth something if it works. Just thinking, if you can't find a spare PC to try it with, then what about taking to your local PC shop and seeing if they'll test it for you for a small charge?

I guess the question im asking is can a i7 take say 200-300F. all of the fans melted from a antec 1200 case. the frio cooler fans melted but the cpu socket did not.

Look for some used x79 board and try it, if it works you win, if it doesn't just get a 4930k.

Yes, it is entirely possible the CPU is still good. The biggest issue I see is the solder/TIM between the CPU die and the IHS melting at those temps and no longer providing a decent contact. Worst case would be the CPU runs hotter than normal, but of course thermal protection should keep the CPU from killing itself.

I agree, since the plastic melted, I'd say you're looking at between 250°F to 500°F+.

unpowered it can take that heat indirect id imagine, the question is did the solder melt on any of its control caps and resistors but if the socket and little caps and resistors around it(mostly at the back) have not been affected its likely the cpu will be fine imho and def worth a try

I don't believe it would be a problem to test it.
If it works at all, then go through the usual rounds of stability testing to be sure it's reliable. If it passes all that, I'd say keep it and let it run as always.
If it doesn't work or shows signs of being wounded, replace it.

Dont toss it find a way to test it. shit send it to one of us for testing. indirectly it can take the heat. is their any sign of damage? the caps on the bottom or gold contacts would be deformed if the fire was too hot. test it. Even if it was fubar you wont kill anything trying.

I'm thinking if it is wounded or dead, the heatsink itself would have conducted the heat to the CPU with the extreme temps a fire would have. That to me would be a big concern as to how much heat it had to withstand. Even if the HS didn't melt, could have absorbed enough heat and heated up the CPU to the point of damage or killing it BUT doesn't hurt to test the CPU anyway.

get a cheap motherboard and test it, if it works in that cheap motherboard then you have a good cpu, if it doesnt fire up then chuck the cpu
