So guys,
I have recently found myself in a dilemma. My D-Link DI-524 has took a few spills too many from behind my desk (should buy some longer ethernet cables in the future), and the antenna has literally fallen out of it's socket. Or should I say, the antenna socket has fallen out of its socket. I have it working right now by jamming the thing in, but that's kinda a crazy way to do it. I was hoping to find a wireless router that, you know, works. And the DI-524 just leaves something to be desired. I have frequent wireless locks/hangs, and the connections quality seems to be perpetually deteriorating. Basically, I need a new wireless router. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on models. Links are appreciated, though not required. If you are going to post links, please have them link to sites in the USA (Shipping from overclockers.co.uk would suck ;)). I'm looking for...
  • Wireless G.
  • Low priced.
  • Fast/reliable.
  • Long range.
  • Something I can get away with LAN gaming on.
I don't need it optimized for heavy network traffic really, there's 1 gaming computer and 1 internet computer on my network. I'm probably going to get this.

I'm trying to get it to go 40 feet from one floor to another through walls. I don't think I'll deal with the internal antenna :p. Linksys is a bit on the expensive side anyways...I think I still like the Buffalo solution.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124141

keep in mind mine was released in 2003 when they still worked not like the ones on noobegg it just don't like xbox live but the wireless on it is better than my dlink-dgl 4300 "the Gameing Router"

i could sell it to u for say 50 shiped

no box just BOTH antennas and the power adapter and an rj45 if u need one

if you need proof i will hook it up again and show u me standing 300ft + from my house using a 54g laptop card that cost me 40 bucks

what ever you do, dont go with linksys, there routers are crap. the same goes for there wireless adapter drivers.they always say "conencted to ap, but intenet can not be found" they are slow, and just generasly full of bugs. the rest of linksys stuff (switches, nas aps (NOT routers) are pretty good.

That thing's a monster! I don't have cable internet, I just need something to share the DSL connection I have (looks good, but sorry, no sale ). I'm afraid my budget is rather limited, so I'm looking for what'll get the job done the cheapest.

Sorry didnt know the conncetion type. Havn't seen to many Buffalo's. I'm a field tech and visit a new residence each day 6/days a week. Lots of linksys-work great, the netgears and D-links are not that common and the people that have them have issues with them.

Well, I have the same router as you and it works great for me, and no signal loss at all. Maybe it's because things have happened to it, but a great router IMO. Works great for me (not for gaming comp, but for media center in living room).

I'm not sure what router to recommend you, but I'll recommend to you what you recommended to me:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127046

Since my computer in my room is rooms away to my living room comp, the signal is was getting was Low or Very Low. I bought this antenna, and going through three walls about 35 feet, it gets Excellent, highest available, so highly recommended antenna from me. Yeah, it's on my Media Comp, but I can download pretty fast.

But I don't think D-Link is bad though. I've had two routers from them, one wireless, and an antenna range booster, and they've all worked great for me, long lasting (router is 1 1/2 years old) so D-Link is a good company, but there are better I guess. Just don't keep D-Link out of it.

Oh no, it's not the antenna that fell out. It's the antenna socket. I kinda need a new wifi router . And I'm glad the antenna is working out for you. Thusfar, I'm very tempted to go with the Buffalo.

I understand that you need a new router, I get that part. But just in case you need more range, that Antenna I showed earlier will do you good...but if you get a router with great range, then that's good also. I just didn't know what router to recommend, but I had the Antenna to recommend.

oh yea and this time take advantage of the mounting holes or get some double sided tape.

throwing a working router at a wall bad idea throwing an apparently non working 80gb WD hardrive on the other hand works wonders don't ask me how but it did:laugh:

I'm going towards the D-Link, because it's black. When it comes to close ties like these, I look at appearances then choose, since they're both good anyway.;)

I second the Linksys wrc54G, I can get great signal on my roof of all places (internet guy used that feature today. About 20 feet and going through a ceiling, insulation, two layers of roof and a set of shingles.

I got the D-link from CompUSA just now, typing it from wireless PC. I love it :). 42% signal, no hanging, and it's just like a wired connection. Especially in download speed. DI-524 wireless download- 120KB/s. New router- ~350KB/s, which is what I usually get on the wired connection.

Ive used this for the last 20 months with no issues at all up to now (touch wood) http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=372 also got a wireless dongle with it for the pricely sum of £70! It may only be 54mbps but as my dsl is only 2mbps it does the job fine, I have 3 systems all wireless and they never drop off unexpectadly and file transfer over the network is fairly fast!

dlink make good stuff from my experience!

My tip is to drop the "consumer" products. Get yourself a "prosumer" or professional hardware, even if it is simple and the bottom-of-the-range, it will still be much better than consumer products.

I have had 2 dlinks fail. Never again. I'm currently using a number of Netgear ProSafe with great success. I recommend one of the following:

WG302 - access (base or bridge mode)
WAG302 - access (base or bridge mode)
FWG114P - router and wireless
FVG318 - router and wireless

The routers have good firewall and portforwarding services, including DNS management and logging (and publishing), remote access and VPN.

The FWG114P is going through 2 solid walls (30cm each) over 10m and I'm getting 85% connection.

Hit ebay. You can even get a new one much much cheaper than retail.
