Dowloaded drivercleaner and used it as per the instructions.
Installed the latest Cats 5.13 and then ATI Tool Beta. Set the fan speed based on the GPU temp - 60% to 55C, 82% above 55C etc.. Fired up 3DMark 2005. This ran okay. Rebooted to see if it this caused problems. Again everything seems fine.
Now here is the weird thing, I had repeated the above steps before but they made no difference. The only thing that I did differently was not screw in the DVI-to-Dsub convertor with a screwdriver.
But who cares what the problem was. I am just happy it is working so far.
