Yahoo and Adobe Partner to Include Ads in PDF Documents

Soon Adobe's popular document format will include functionality to support advertising, thanks to a new partnership with Yahoo. The two companies are framing the service as a way to allow publishers to offer their content on an ad-supported basis. This could also accelerate the adoption of PDF as a way to deliver paper content to subscribers in electronic form. Ads within the PDFs would appear in a side panel and would only be viewable by those using Adobe's readers, as to "not disrupt the viewing experience." Ads would be dynamically matched to the content within the PDF, Adobe said. "By partnering with Yahoo on this innovative advertising service, we are creating opportunities for publishers to build new businesses around unique content that previously was just given away or not available to a mass online audience," Adobe corporate development chief Rob Tarkoff said. The offering would be in beta for several months, and would be open initially only to US English-language publishers.

I can see this making a lot of money (espically with ads in DVDs). While selling the ad-infested DVDs at the same price DVDs have always been sold, they can sell adless DVDs for a higher price. :shadedshu

If this is just for online browsing, ie html hosted PDFs, then its not so bad.

If however, it gets embedded in a PDF than is saved on your desktop, so that whenever you reopen the PDF you start getting more ads then that will PMO.

If the second, then I'm sure it would be possible do develop a "strip" utility to mod the PDF to remove the ad links. If not, ie. secured documents, then that will really PMO even more.

Problem with PDFs is there unusually long load times (depending on document size and when it needs to refresh after so many pages). IT also hogs some system resources by slowing it down a little. Other than those, its one of the best looking document readers out there.

I don't mind them if they Do mot FLASH or Auto connect to the internet all though Auto connecting ones can be solved with a firewall like Outpost Firewall \ Tiny Firewall and such.

FFS whats next? A army of hover TVs that track your every movement and float down in front of you every time you need to take a piss? Somebody needs to draw a line for these advertisements. To an extent their getting to the stage of harassment, just like when people repeatedly get telemarketing phone calls.

I also see this form of advertising as a serious security flaw that could be exploited by all the bastards out there that just love to write viruses. (Think how easy it is for your compy to get infected by adware or viruses even if your fully protected and simply open up a browser with yahoo or google toolbar)
