ASUS Previews RT-AXE7800 Router at Computex, 6 Antennas!

As Computex is a hybrid event this year, a lot of companies are showing off their products online and ASUS has shared a whole host of upcoming products. One that caught our eye was the upcoming RT-AXE7800 router, mostly because it resembles a boxy version of a German kaisersemmeln or kaiser roll when the antennas are folded down. Unfortunately, ASUS didn't share too many details about the RT-AXE7800, but it's a tri-band WiFi 6E router and ASUS claims that it supports wireless speeds up to 7800 Mbps, hence the model name. It supports 160 MHz wide channels, although this is pretty common in WiFi 6E routers, as is the 1024-QAM support and the 6 GHz band that ASUS shared that the router will support.

What we can tell from the pictures, is that it'll have a single 2.5 Gbps port that can be used as either a WAN or a LAN port, as well as four Gigabit Ethernet ports, of which one can be a WAN port, or it can be teamed with a second Gigabit port. Keep in mind that teaming doesn't actually give you double the bandwidth to a single client, it requires multiple clients to offer any kind of advantage, as well as a managed switch, alternatively a NAS or a server that supports teaming. Around the back there's a single USB 3.0 port and this is also where the power connector is located. It obviously has six foldable antennas and we'd expect to see more similar designs in the future, as consumer routers with supports for the WiFi channels in the 6 GHz band aren't allowed to have removable antennas. This will also apply to WiFi 7 routers, as it's a regulatory requirement.

TP-Link Said to be Sharing all Router Traffic with Third Party

These days, routers are quite complex devices that are doing much more than just routing data and are often the main security device on a home network. As such, we've seen a surge in third party services such as Asus' AIProtection that runs software from Trend Micro and Netgear Armor in cooperation with Bitdefender. Chinese TP-Link is likewise offering similar services, some in partnership with Trend Micro and some with Avira. It now appears that TP-Link's HomeCare service—that the company is offering in partnership with Avira—is sending data to Avira even when disabled in the UI, based on a thread over at Reddit.

The standard Avira features are meant to offer protection against malicious content, network intrusions and even against infected devices on the network that are said to be quarantined from other devices on the network. It also incorporates some basic parental control features, such as automatic content filtering and time controls. However, in this case, the issue isn't the functionality itself, but the fact that there apparently is no way to turn off the HomeCare feature, since even when seemingly disabled in the UI of the affected routers, it sends data to Avira. It seems to be a fairly large amount of data being sent as well, with the initial poster claiming over 80,000 requests in a 24 hour period. According to a review of a TP-Link product over on XDA-Developers from May last year, TP-Link said that they were working on a firmware update that would allow the Avira service to be turned off permanently.

Wi-Fi 6/6e Expected to Become Mainstream Technology with Close to 60% Market Share in 2022, Says TrendForce

Exponential demand growth for remote and unmanned terminals in smart home, logistics, manufacturing and other end-user applications has driven iterative updates in Wi-Fi technology. Among the current generations of technologies, Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) is mainstream while Wi-Fi 6 and 6E (802.11ax) are at promotional stages, according to TrendForce's investigations. In order to meet the connection requirements of industry concepts such as the Metaverse, many major manufacturers have trained their focus on the faster and more stable next generation 802.11be Wi-Fi standard amendment, commonly known as Wi-Fi 7. Considering technical characteristics, maturity, and product certification status, Wi-Fi 6 and 6E are expected to surpass Wi-Fi 5 to become mainstream technology in 2022, with global market share expected to reach 58%.

Synology Teases RT6600ax Router With 5.9 GHz UNII-4 Support

When it comes to routers, Synology might not be the first brand that springs to mind, but the company has produced some interesting routers, especially when you take into account its custom OS, the Synology Router Manager, or SRM for short. The company has teased a new addition to its small family of routers, which should launch at some point in the first quarter of next year, that brings with it a few interesting features.

The RT6600ax as it's called, will be one of the first routers to support the UNII-4 WiFi band, also known as the 5.9 GHz band. This is an extension of the 802.11ax/WiFi 6 band and it's not related to WiFi 6E which uses the 6 GHz band. UNII-4 only adds a total of four 20 MHz WiFi channels, but the key here is that it allows for a third 160 MHz wide channel, something that could be handy in congested locations. For now, UNII-4 is only going to be usable in the US, although more countries are likely to be considering opening up the extra frequencies for WiFi usage. That said, it's unlikely that Europe and Japan will allow it, since neither region supports the UNII-3 frequency band.

Fully customizable ASUS Aura RGB lighting effects make the GT-AX6000 a router that demands to be seen. Built for high-speed throughput to deliver more bandwidth to more devices, the GT-AX6000 features two 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, and the router supports both WAN and LAN aggregation.

The ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 is a powerful 4x4 dual-band WiFi 6 router that delivers combined speeds of up to 6000 Mbps—1148 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and 4804 Mbps on the 5 GHz band—which is up to 2.3X faster than a 4x4 dual-band WiFi 5 router. With a combination of 160 MHz channels, OFDMA and MU-MIMO technology, WiFi 6 provides up to 4X-greater network capacity and efficiency in traffic-dense environments, making it ideal for heavily populated networks.

Gigabyte's Z690 Aorus Xtreme Leaks, Features Two PCIe 5.0 x16 Slots

With only about two weeks until Intel's official launch of its Alder Lake CPUs and the Z690 chipset, it would appear that the leaks are getting kicked up a notch and the latest leak is a rather intriguing one to say the least. Gigabytes Z690 Aorus Xtreme is a rather unusual looking motherboard, in as much as you can make a motherboard that look unusual, least not with regards to the slot placement, but also for the peculiar cover over the DRAM slots.

It's not quite clear what the function of the memory cover is beyond aesthetics, if any, but it seems unlikely that it has an integrated LCD screen, although not unthinkable. Pretty much the entire board is covered in either metal or plastic, which makes this look like a real chore to build, at least if you're planning on using M.2 SSDs. The standout feature here is that the board features a pair of PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, although as per current consumer boards, the bandwidth would be shared between the slots if the second one is used, so both slots end up as x8 slots. There's also a third PCIe x16 slot, but no indication of the bandwidth available to it.

The PCE-AX58BT connects to your desktop PC over a PCI-Express x1 slot, and an included USB 2.0 header cable (needed for the Bluetooth component). A pair of external antennae are fixed to a magnetized base that can be placed either on your desk, or on top of your PC case. While ASUS does not mention the controller, it is very likely the Intel AX210 Gig+ looking at the feature-set. It sits underneath an aluminium heatsink on an M.2-2230 card on top of the add-on card's main PCB. The company didn't reveal pricing or availability information. ASUS is readying a portfolio of Wi-Fi 6E consumer networking hardware, including the upcoming ZenWiFi PRO router.
