Silicon Box Opens US$2 Billion Advanced Semiconductor Assembly Plant in Singapore

Somewhat out of the blue, Silicon Box has announced the opening of its US$2 billion semiconductor assembly plant in Singapore. The "startup" is founded by several of Marvell's founders, suggesting the company has the right pedigree to compete in what is sure to be a very competitive market over the next few years. Silicon Box is not a foundry and will at least at this point in time, not be involved in foundry services, but instead the company will focus on advanced chip packaging technologies, focusing on chiplets.

The company is promising "faster time-to-market, lower new device design cost" on its very rudimentary website, something the company has yet to prove to be capable of. However, its new plant in Singapore covers 73,000 square metres and is said to feature state of the art production equipment for turning chiplets into chips. The factory is said to create some 1,200 jobs in Singapore, suggesting that this is a company that means business. According to a comment by company founder and CEO BJ Han to Reuters, "customers had been lining up" since before the completion of the assembly plant. Silicon Box is expecting to have several AI chipset companies as its customers, including Tenstorrent, which so far is the only officially mentioned client. Time will tell if Silicon Box can compete with established chip packaging businesses and if they can deliver on their promise to be faster and cheaper than the competition.

Intel Releases Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.4575 as a WHQL

Intel Graphics released the Arc GPU Graphics Drivers version 101.4575 that it originally released as a beta late last week, as a WHQL. What's interesting is that while the driver version number hasn't changed when compared to the 101.4575 beta drivers from last week, the new 101.4575 comes with a different change-log. It mentions Game On (day-one) optimization for "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," and "Remnant II," in addition to optimization for "Exoprimal" and "Jagged Alliance 3." that were announced last week. Besides this, the "fixed isses" and "known issues" lists between the beta and WHQL are identical.

ROG Ally Gets BIOS Update that Fixes Multiple Usability Issues

ASUS has issued a BIOS update for the ROG Ally that should help resolve multiple usability issues, most of them being fairly minor issues, but they're all quality of life improvements nonetheless. To start with, ASUS has made optimisations to the performance mode with the Ally plugged in to a power source, although the company didn't explain exactly what this means. Another minor improvement allows the "Memory Assigned to GPU" setting to be kept when updating to a new BIOS version, a setting that used to get reset prior to this BIOS release.

Another minor quality of life update is the ability to reduce the backlight to 10 nits now, down from the previous 25 nits, which should make it more comfortable to use the ROG Ally in dark rooms. Finally and possibly the most important part of this update is the ability to charge at 30 W from 65 W or higher rated USB-PD chargers. What ASUS has done here is improvements to the USB-PD "handshake" to make sure that the ROG Ally gets the right power from the power adapter. This was apparently not working as intended previously and the ROG Ally would charge at a slower rate. It should be noted that not all chargers will provide enough power to the ROG Ally, especially if other devices are charging at the same time. ASUS points out that if the battery is draining when the Ally is plugged in, a different charger should be used.

Dolphin Emulator Dev Comments on Steam Removal Controversy

Well that blew up, huh? If you follow emulation or just gaming on the whole, you've probably heard about the controversy around the Dolphin Steam release and the Wii Common Key. There's been a lot of conclusions made, and while we've wanted to defend ourselves, we thought it would be prudent to contact lawyers first to make sure that our understanding of the situation was legally sound. That took some time, which was frustrating to ourselves and to our users, but now we are educated and ready to give an informed response.

We'd like to thank Kellen Voyer of Voyer Law for providing us with legal council for this matter. And to be clear, all of the analysis below is specifically regarding US law. Without further delay, let's begin.

PlayStation VR2 Product Manager Goes Deep into Design Process

When PlayStation VR2 released earlier this year, it offered players a chance to experience virtual game worlds bristling with detail and immersive features. PS VR2 was the culmination of several years of development, which included multiple prototypes and testing approaches. To learn more, we asked PS VR2's Product Manager Yasuo Takahashi about the development process of the innovative headset and PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller, and also gained insight into the various prototypes that were created as part of this process.

PlayStation Blog: When did development for the PS VR2 headset start?
Yasuo Takahashi: Research on future VR technology was being conducted even prior to the launch of the original PlayStation VR as part of our R&D efforts. After PS VR's launch in 2016, discussion around what the next generation of VR would look like began in earnest. We went back and reviewed those R&D findings and we started prototyping various technologies at the beginning of 2017. Early that same year, we began detailed conversations on what features should be implemented in the new product, and which specific technologies we should explore further.

AIC Launches HA401-TU, a New High-availability Server Model

AIC has launched the new high-availability storage server HA401-TU, which is optimized for mission-critical, enterprise-level storage applications. This cluster-in-a-box solution with active-active failover design and eliminates single points of failure. HA401-TU is a 4U high-availability (HA) server with 2 controller nodes and supports 24 3.5" SAS 12 Gb/s drives. Each controller node is equipped with an AIC Tucana server board that is powered by dual 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and Intel C621A chipset, which supports UPI speed up to 11.2 GT/s. HA401-TU provides enterprise users with a number of crucial benefits. The redundant hardware components ensure that there is no single point of failure.

With the hot-swappable functionality, the controller canisters protect enterprises from the loss of revenue that can occur when access to mission-critical data or applications is disrupted. Both controller nodes process data input/output (I/O) operations and users can experience simultaneous and balanced access to logical devices. In the event of failover, the secondary node will automatically take over the devices, client connections and all the processes and services running in the system. This high-availability design significantly enhances the overall performance of clusters, enabling seamless handling of demanding workloads.

NVIDIA is Looking at Samsung for HBM3 Memory and 2.5D Chip Packaging

According to news out of Korea, NVIDIA is considering Samsung as a partner not only for HBM3 memory, but also as a potential partner when it comes to 2.5D chip packaging. The latter is due to TSMC having limited capacity when it comes to handling all of its customers advanced chip packaging needs, although Samsung is apparently not the only potential partner NVIDIA is looking at. Taiwan based SPIL and US based Amkor Technology are two alternative candidates for the 2.5D chip packaging according to the Elec.

As far as HBM3 memory goes, NVIDIA doesn't have as many potential options, with SK Hynix being its current partner, who NVIDIA will continue to work with when it comes to HBM memory for its high-end AI accelerators and GPUs. It's likely that Samsung is trying to win NVIDIA back as a foundry customer, by proving that it's capable of handling the chip packaging for NVIDIA. Samsung will likely use its I-Cube 2.5D packaging technology and the Elec suggests that Samsung would still be using TSMC made GPU wafers which will be mated with Samsung HMB3 memory. Samsung has as yet not started its mass production of HMB3 memory, but have sampled customers with evaluation samples that are said to have received very positive feedback. For now, nothing has been agreed and TSMC is, as we know, looking to expand its 2.5D packaging business by over 40 percent, but the question is how quickly TSMC can move before its customers consider other competitors.

AMD's CTO Discusses Founding of Ultra Ethernet Consortium

Mark Papermaster, AMD's Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of Technology and Engineering announced: "Over the past 50 years, Ethernet has grown to dominate general networking. One of its key strengths is flexibility - the ability to adapt to different workloads, scale and computing environments. Now, the Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC) was formed by leading technology companies to focus on tuning the Ethernet foundation for high-performance Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and High-Performance Computing (AI/ML/HPC) workloads. This includes work at the Physical, Link, Transport, and Software layers with robust security and congestion protections.

AMD "Strix Point" Zen 5 Monolithic Silicon has a 12-core CPU?

It looks like the monolithic silicon that succeeds "Phoenix," codenamed "Strix Point," will finally introduce an increase in CPU core counts for the thin-and-light and ultraportable mobile platforms. "Strix Point" is codename for the next-generation APU die being developed at AMD, which, according to a leaked MilkyWay@Home benchmark result, comes with a 12-core/24-thread CPU.

The silicon is identified by MilkyWay@Home with the OPN "AMD Eng Sample: 100-000000994-03_N," and CPU identification string "AuthenticAMD Family 26 Model 32 Stepping 0 -> B20F00." The "Strix Point" CPU could be the second time AMD has increased CPU core-counts per CCX. From "Zen 3" onward, the company increased the cores per CCX from 4 to 8, allowing a single "Zen 3" CCX on the "Cezanne" monolithic silicon to come with 8 cores. It's highly likely that with "Zen 5," the company is increasing the cores/CCX to 12, and that "Strix Point" has one of these CCXs.

Samsung GDDR7 Memory Operates at Lower Voltage, Built on Same Node as 24 Gbps G6

Samsung on Wednesday announced mass-production of the world's first next-generation GDDR7 memory chips, and Ryan Smith from AnandTech scored a few technical details from the company. Apparently, the company's first production version of GDDR7 memory is built on the same D1z silicon foundry node as its 24 Gbps GDDR6 memory chip—the fastest GDDR6 chip in production. D1z is a 10 nm class foundry node that utilizes EUV lithography.

Smith also scored some electrical specs. The first-gen GDDR7 memory chip offers a data-rate of 32 Gbps at a DRAM voltage of 1.2 V, compared to the 1.35 V that some of the higher speed GDDR6 chips operate at. While the pJpb (pico-Joules per bit) is 7% higher than the current generation in absolute terms, for the 32 Gbps data-rate on offer, it is 20% lower compared to that of the 24 Gbps GDDR6 chip. Put simply, GDDR7 is 20% more energy efficient. Smith remarks that this energy-efficiency gain is purely architectural, and isn't a from any refinements to the D1z node. GDDR7 uses PAM3 signaling compared to the NRZ signaling of conventional GDDR6, and the PAM4 signalling of the GDDR6X non-JEDEC standard that NVIDIA co-developed with Micron Technology.

VESA Approves the use of New DisplayPort 2.1 Compliance Tests

Teledyne LeCroy, the worldwide leader in protocol test solutions, announced that it has received Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) approval for testing DisplayPort 2.1 Link Training Tunable PHY Repeater (LTTPR) and Display Stream Compression (DSC) compliance with the quantumdata M42de Video Analyzer and Generator. These tests underwent extensive testing during industry workshops to ensure their accuracy and reliability and are now considered mandatory for compliance certification of DisplayPort 2.1 Ultra High Bit Rate (UHBR) capable devices.

The DisplayPort specification was updated to version 2.1 in October of 2022 and brought significant changes to link training and LTTPR operation. Design and test engineers are faced with incrementally more testing as DisplayPort chipsets add support for the new link training and other advanced features. "The need to drive higher video resolutions and frame rates raises the bar for vendors seeking VESA logo approval. Compliance testing is a key factor in delivering a robust DisplayPort technology ecosystem and outstanding customer experiences," said Bill Lempesis, executive director of VESA, which develops and administers the DisplayPort standard and compliance logo program. "Reaching this level of comprehensive test coverage so quickly after the DisplayPort 2.1 specification was released is only possible due to the close collaboration between test vendors like Teledyne LeCroy and our VESA member companies."

ASRock Quietly Releases 16GB Arc A770 Phantom Gaming Graphics Card

Without a formal announcement, or even a product page on its website, ASRock has quietly released a 16 GB version of its Arc A770 Phantom Gaming graphics card. The company's A770 lineup has just the one model—the Phantom Gaming OC, with 8 GB of 16 Gbps GDDR6 memory across the GPU's 256-bit memory interface. The new 16 GB model would be among very few of its kind being released by Intel's board partners, in an attempt to make the A770 an attractive option for those in the market for 1080p thru 1440p capable graphics cards.

Intel's reference designs for the Arc 7 series included the A770 Limited Edition, a card with 16 GB of 17.5 Gbps GDDR6 memory, while the plan originally was for 8 GB of 16 Gbps memory to be the standard memory configuration for the A770. It remains to be seen if the new ASRock Phantom Gaming OC is using 17.5 Gbps memory, or 16 Gbps. The only other 16 GB A770 custom design graphics card available in the West has to be the Acer Predator Arc A770 BiFrost 16 GB. The ASRock A770 16 GB PG was discovered on US retailer Newegg, where it was listed for $329.
