GIGABYTE Offers Statement Regarding the SP-CAP and MLCC Capacitor on GeForce RTX 3080 Graphics Cards

In response to the recent reports speculating that the use of POSCAP capacitors on the GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards could lead to stability issues and crashes, GIGABYTE would like to clarify the issue with the following statement. It is false that POSCAP capacitors independently could cause a hardware crash. Whether a graphics card is stable or not requires a comprehensive evaluation of the overall circuit and power delivery design, not just the difference in capacitor types. POSCAPs and MLCCs have different characteristics and uses, thus it is not true to assert that one capacitor type is better than the other.

The GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards are designed in accordance with NVIDIA specifications, and have passed all required testing, thus the product quality is guaranteed. GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC and EAGLE OC series graphics cards use high-quality, low-ESR 470uF SP-CAP capacitors, which meet the specifications set by NVIDIA and provide a total capacity of 2820u in terms of GPU core power, higher than the industry's average. The cost of SP-CAP capacitors is not lower than that of MLCCs. GIGABYTE values product integrity highly and definitely does not reduce costs by using cheap materials.

GIGABYTE Unveils BRIX Pro Mini PCs Powered by "Tiger Lake" 11th Gen Core Processors

GIGABYTE unveiled the BRIX Pro line of mini PC barebones powered by 11th Gen Intel Core "Tiger Lake-U" processors. These include the BSi3-1115G4, which packs a Core i3-1115G4 (2-core/4-thread, up to 4.10 GHz, 48 Gen12 EUs), the BSi5-1135G7, with a Core i5-1135G7 (4-core/8-thread, up to 4.20 GHz, 80 Gen12 EUs), and the top BSi7-1165G7, powered by a Core i7-1165G7 (4-core/8-thread, up to 4.70 GHz, 96 Gen12 EUs). Since these are desktop platforms, the TDP of these "Tiger Lake" chips in all three models is configured at 28 W. All three models are based on a common chassis design measuring 196.2 mm x 44.4 mm x 140 mm (WxHxD).

Under the hood, you get two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots that support up to 64 GB of dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory; and two M.2-2280 slots. One of these has PCI-Express 4.0 x4 wiring from the CPU die, while the other has PCI-Express 3.0 x4 and SATA 6 Gbps wiring, from the PCH die. There's also a vacant SATA 6 Gbps port (possibly for devices such as DOMs). The BRIX Pro offers the full I/O feature-set of "Tiger Lake," including one Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 port, six USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, display I/O that includes four HDMI 2.0a ports, and networking options that include a 2.5 GbE port (Intel i225-V controller), a 1 GbE port (i219-V controller), and 802.11ax WiFi 6 + Bluetooth 5.0 from an Intel AX201 WLAN card. The BSi7-1165G7 includes an Infineon TPM. A 135-Watt power brick is included. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Enermax Intros MarbleBron Line of Semi-Modular PSUs

Enermax today rolled out the MarbleBron line of mid-range PSUs. Available in 550 W, 650 W, and 750 W models, these PSUs offer partial modular cabling with 80 Plus Bronze efficiency. Under the hood, these units offer DC-to-DC switching, APFC, and protection against over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. A single +12 V rail design is employed on all three models, with a 45 A main rail on the 550 W model, a 54 A rail on the 650 W model, and a 62 A rail on the 750 W model.

Another key feature with the MarbleBron is the use of a 120 mm high static-pressure fan with "Smart Air Control," with the PSU's noise output rated at 14 dBA with the load under 40%. The 550 W and 650 W models offer just one 4+4 pin EPS connector, while the 750 W model offers two. The 650 W and 750 W models offer four 6+2 pin PCIe power connectors, while the 550 W offers two. The company didn't reveal warranty or pricing information.

HyperX Increases DRAM Density With New Impact SODIMM DDR4 Lineup

HyperX has launched their Impact lineup of DDR4 DRAM, which boasts of high memory densities per stick for space-constrained setups such as laptops or SFF PCs. The new Impact SODIMMs are available in capacities up to 32 GB per stick, which should make possible for users to install up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM in their system. All Impact SODIMM operate at 1.2 V, thus enabling relatively low power consumption.

Available operating frequencies stand at 2400 MHz (15-15-15); 2666 MHz (16-18-18); 2933 MHz (17-19-19); and 3200 MHz (20-22-22) - timings are slightly loose, but that's to be expected at these densities and, most importantly in space and/or cooling-constrained environments, voltage. HyperX Impact SODIMMs are available in single modules, dual channel kits, and quad channel kits. MSRP starts at $77 for a 16 GB module running at 2400 MHz, and apparently tops out at $358.99 for 2x 32 GB modules at 3200 MHz.

First Signs of AMD Zen 3 "Vermeer" CPUs Surface, Ryzen 7 5800X Tested

AMD is preparing to launch the new iteration of desktop CPUs based on the latest Zen 3 core, codenamed Vermeer. On October 8th, AMD will hold the presentation and again deliver the latest technological advancements to its desktop platform. The latest generation of CPUs will be branded as a part of 5000 series, bypassing the 4000 series naming scheme which should follow, given that the prior generation was labeled as 3000 series of processors. Nonetheless, AMD is going to bring a new Zen 3 core with its processors, which should bring modest IPC gains. It will be manufactured on TSMC's 7 nm+ manufacturing node, which offers a further improvement to power efficiency and transistor density.

Today, we have gotten the first benchmark of AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X CPU. Thanks to the popular hardware leaker, TUP APISAK, we have the first benchmark of the new Vermeer processor, compared to Intel's latest and greatest - Core i9-10900K. The AMD processor is an eight-core, sixteen threaded model compared to the 10C/20T Intel processor. While we do not know the final clocks of the AMD CPU, we could assume that the engineering sample was used and we could see an even higher performance. Below you can see the performance of the CPU and how it compares to Intel. By the numbers shown, we can expect AMD to possibly be a new gaming king, as the numbers are very close to Intel. The average batch result for the Ryzen 7 5800X was 59.3 FPS and when it comes to CPU frames it managed to score 133.6 FPS. Intel's best managed to average 60.3 FPS and 114.8 FPS from the CPU framerates. Both systems were tested with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 2080 GPUs.

SilverStone Announces the IceGem Line of AIO Liquid CPU Coolers

SilverStone today rolled out the IceGem line of all-in-one, closed-loop, liquid CPU coolers. The IceGem comes in three variants based on radiator size, the IceGem 360 (360 mm x 120 mm), IceGem 280 (280 mm x 140 mm), and the IceGem 240P (240 mm x 120 mm). It's pertinent to note here, that while the radiators of the 360 and 280 variants are 28 mm thick, the 240P stands out with a thicker 38 mm radiator. The IceGem series is characterized by a large, somewhat octagonal pump-block unit with a crystal crown-like acrylic ARGB diffuser ornament on top; Nylon sleeved tubing, the latest-generation 3-phase, 6-pole pump-block design, and a large rectangular cold-plate that has enough surface area to cover even the largest AMD Threadripper processors. All three variants in the series support sockets TR4 and sTRX4, besides LGA1200/115x, AM4, and LGA2066.

The radiator features aluminium finnage, and depending on the model, two or three pressure-optimized fans with ARGB lighting. The 240P and 360 variants include 120 mm fans that turn at between 600 to 2,200 RPM, pushing up to 93.4 CFM of airflow, 3.18 mm H₂O static pressure, and 7.3 to 36.6 dBA noise output, each. The 140 mm fans included with the 280 variant turns at 600 to 1,600 RPM, pushing up to 99.20 CFM of airflow, at 3.1 mm H₂O static pressure, and 9.8 to 23.4 dBA noise output. SilverStone rates the 240P variant as being capable of handling thermal loads of up to 280 W, the 280 variant up to 320 W, and the top 360 variant up to 350 W. All three variants are backed by 3-year warranties, although in some markets the warranty could be as high as 5-year. The IceGem 240P is priced at USD $139.99, the IceGem 280 at $159.99, and the IceGem 360 at $169.99.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 KINGPIN Achieves 2.58 GHz Core Clock, Breaks World Record in 3D Mark Port Royal

[Update, September 29, 2020: We now have a good first look at the card courtesy the man himself. It confirms what we already knew, with a 360 mm AIO cooler and a flip-up OLED screen paired to the flagship offering from EVGA this generation.]

It's only been moments after the RTX 3090's release, but professional overclockers are already unleashing the power available on NVIDIA's GA-102 chip by resorting to exotic cooling techniques. Renowned overclocker Vince "K|NGP|N" Lucido, who works in close proximity with NVIDIA AIB EVGA, tamed the RTX 3090's temperature by resorting to liquid nitrogen. This, alongside tweaks to Vcore (1069 mV) allowed the card to reach a startling 2.58 GHz core clock (a staggering 52.2% increase over NVIDIA's base clock), and 10.750 MHz (21.5 Gbps) memory clocks on the GDDR6X subsystem, which in itself is a 10.3% increase over reference clocks.

The 16.673 3D Mark Port Royal score was achieved with a fully custom design made by EVGA with Vince Lucidos' input. This über 3090 ultimately delivered a performance increase of around 30% more than the stock RTX 3090 would be able to, which isn't a bad equilibrium between the core and memory clock increases. Some might say this is the performance delta one would expect between the 3090 and the 3080 (an overall 40% performance increase, considering the 3090 is already an average of 10% faster than the 3080 at stock clocks).

NVIDIA Releases Game Ready 456.55 WHQL Driver With Improved Stability of RTX 3000 Series Cards, Support for Star Wars: Squadrons

NVIDIA has today released the latest iteration of its Game Ready driver with the version number 456.55. Marked as a WHQL release, the driver is supposedly going to bring new advancements to the stability of the latest GeForce RTX 3000 series Ampere graphics cards. While the release notes don't officially mention anything on how it improves, it is already confirmed by a few Redditors that the new driver removes crashed experienced with the past version 456.38. In the latest revision, the support has been added for NVIDIA Reflex in Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as well as support for Star Wars: Squadrons game. NVIDIA AIC Partners Clarify RTX 3080/3090 Crash to Desktop Issues, Capacitor Choices

Compounding the limited availability with the crash to desktop issues users have been experiencing with NVIDIA's recent RTX 3080/3090 graphics cards have led to rivers of digital ink being run on NVIDIA's latest RTX-30 series. After we've reported on NVIDIA's PG132 "Base Design" and manufacturer-specific capacitor choices and circuitry, we've now seen many of NVIDIA's AIC partners actually respond to this issue, clarifying their choices in this specific part of RTX 30-series board design, as well as the steps they've taken (if any) so as to help solve the issues (which are thus confirmed as being somewhat related to these capacitor choices, even if they are not the root cause.)

Enermax Launches CYBERBRON Entry-Level PSU Lineup: 500 W, 600 W, 700 W, 80 Plus Bronze

Enermax has announced a new entry-level PSU lineup, which they have somewhat clumsily named CYBERBRON (it's not Cybertron nor Cyberborn, but Cyberbron). These are pretty standard affairs, featuring a non-modular cable design (though the cables are flattened for easier routing), 80 plus Bronze certification, and Japanese electrolytic capacitors. A single+rail +12 V design lies under the hood as well, as does a 120 mm fan.

Operating protections are pretty standard as well: OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection) and OTP (Over Temperature Protection). Dimensions stand at 150 (W) x 86 (H) x 140 (D) mm. The 700 W version delivers 54 A on the +12 V rail, 17 A under +5V, and 19 A under +3.3 V. US Government Could Blacklist Chinese Chipmaker SMIC

The Trump administration has reportedly been considering adding to Chinese chipmaker SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) to the trade blacklist of Chinese companies, restricting the company of doing any business with the United States and/or with any of its affiliates. The original report comes from Reuters and it states that the move came from Pentagon after considering whatever SMIC should be placed on a blacklist. It is so far unclear if other US agencies support the decision, however, it should be public in the near future. The company has received the news on Saturday and it was "in complete shock" about the decision. Shortly after the news broke, SMIC stock has fallen as much as 15% amid the possible blacklist. If SMIC would like to continue working with American suppliers, it would need to seek a difficult-to-obtain license from the government.

Update 28th September: The United States government has officially imposed sanctions on the Chinese chipmaker SMIC. The company is now under US sanctions and is placed on a trade blacklist.

TSMC Ramps Up 3 nm Node Production

TSMC has had quite a good time recently. They are having all of their capacity fully booked and the development of new semiconductor nodes is going good. Today, thanks to the report of DigiTimes, we have found out that TSMC is ramping up the production lines to prepare for 3 nm high-volume manufacturing. The 3 nm node is expected to enter HVM in 2022, which is not that far away. In the beginning, the new node is going to be manufactured on 55.000 wafers of 300 mm size, and it is expected to reach as much as 100.000 wafers per month output by 2023. With the accelerated purchase of EUV machines, TSMC already has all of the equipment required for the manufacturing of the latest node. We are waiting to see more details on the 3 nm node as we approach its official release.
