NVIDIA to Cut Down TSMC 5nm Orders with the Crypto Gravy Train Derailed, AMD Could Benefit

NVIDIA is reportedly looking to reduce orders for 5 nm wafers from TSMC as it anticipates a significant drop in demand from both gamers and crypto-currency miners. Miners are flooding the market with used GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards, which gamers are all too happy to buy, affecting NVIDIA's sales to both segments of the market. Before the crypto-currency crash of Q1-2022, NVIDIA had projected good sales of its next-generation GeForce GPUs, and prospectively placed orders for a large allocation of 5 nm wafers from TSMC. The company had switched back over to TSMC from Samsung, which makes 8 nm GPUs from the RTX 30-series.

With NVIDIA changing its mind on 5 nm orders, it is at the mercy of TSMC, which has made those allocations (and now faces a loss). It's incumbent on NVIDIA to find a replacement customer for the 5 nm volumes it wants to back out from. Chiakokhua (aka Retired Engineer), interpreted a DigiTimes article originally written in Chinese, which says that NVIDIA has made pre-payments to TSMC for its 5 nm allocation, and now wants to withdraw from some of it. TSMC is unwilling to budge—it could at best hold off shipments by a quarter to Q1-2023, allowing NVIDIA to get the market to digest inventory of 8 nm GPUs; and NVIDIA is responsible for finding replacement customers for the cancelled allocation.

AMD Readies More Ryzen 5000X3D Processors?

AMD is looking to expand its Socket AM4 Ryzen 5000X3D processor lineup, according to Greymon55, a reliable source with AMD rumors. The current Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8-core processor was well received by the tech-press for its 3D Vertical Cache innovation that significantly improved gaming performance, putting it in the same league as Intel's fastest 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake" processors, despite being based on the older "Zen 3" microarchitecture. AMD uses the same 8-core 3DV Cache chiplet (CCD) in its EPYC "Milan-X" enterprise processors. This lineup could see an expansion, with announcements expected in July.

If true, it could see the introduction of SKUs such as the Ryzen 5 5600X3D, Ryzen 9 5900X3D, or perhaps even the 5950X3D, with the latter two featuring a mind-boggling 200 MB of Total Cache (L2+L3). This would provide a tempting upgrade path to everyone with a Socket AM4 platform, now that AMD has extended official "Zen 3" support to even the oldest AMD 300-series chipset motherboards. There is yet another rumor that predicts AMD could develop certain "Zen 4" SKUs on the AM4 package, which sees a "Zen 4" CCD paired with a current-gen cIOD that has DDR4 and PCIe Gen 4 connectivity. Regardless of which rumor is true, AMD's support for AM4 isn't ending anytime soon.

At its heart is the RP2040 microcontroller, built on TSMC's 40 nm low-power process, and incorporating two 133 MHz Arm Cortex-M0+ cores, 264kB of on-chip SRAM, and our unique programmable I/O subsystem. Since launch, we've sold nearly two million Pico boards, and RP2040 has found its way into a huge number of third-party products. We always believed that RP2040 was a great fit for commercial and industrial applications, but the global semiconductor shortage has vastly accelerated adoption. LCD Monitor Panel shipments Forecast to Drop 11.3% QoQ in 2Q22 with Weak Demand Continuing into 2H22, Says TrendForce

According to TrendForce research, terminal demand remains weak due to repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian war, rising inflation, and China's pandemic lockdowns as monitor brands began to reduce purchasing of LCD monitor panels in 2Q22. LCD monitors panel shipments in 2Q22 are estimated at 42.5 million units, down 11.3% QoQ. According to TrendForce analysis, monitor brands set fairly high shipment targets in early 2022. Coupled with the impact of LCD monitor panel shortages in 2021, monitor brands gravitated towards overbuying panels in 1Q22 to prepare for ensuing shipments. Driven by strong demand from monitor brands, shipments of LCD monitor panels reached 47.9 million units in 1Q22, up 20% YoY, the highest level for the period since 2012.

However, due to changes in the international political and economic landscape in February this year, the market for consumer models has cooled and monitor brands have successively revised their LCD monitor shipment targets downward and simultaneously lowered their panel purchase volumes. In the face of interest rate hikes by the world's major central banks and slowing economic growth, companies have also begun exercising caution in terms of capital expenditures, which has slowed demand for business-grade LCD monitors. In the past, inventory issues emerged and the overall market became oversupplied when monitor brands overstocked as consumer and business demand gradually cooled.

AMD Releases Adrenalin 22.6.1 Legacy Software for Older GPUs

AMD today released AMD Software Adrenalin 22.6.1 Legacy. This is a special branch of AMD software designed for older GPUs based on the Graphics CoreNext architecture—Fury series, 300 series, 200 series, and HD 7000/8000 series. The driver only supports Windows 10 64-bit, there's no official support for Windows 11. Legacy branch drivers correct outstanding bugs, security vulnerabilities, and some other software-level updates, but the company doesn't advertise any new game-specific optimizations. This is probably because these GPU generations fall outside the minimum system requirements of the latest games. Still, if you'd like to reminisce with an older GPU you have lying around, or want to build a period-specific project (2010 to 2015); here's your chance. AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5900WX-series Pricing Revealed

Last week, AMD announced that its Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5900WX-series of processors were going to be available from more OEMs, with an eventual retail version of the three models going to be available. Now the company has shared the retail pricing for the new workstation processors and it would appear that AMD's HEDT platform has become unobtanium for most consumers, after having been one of the cheapest platforms out there only a couple of generations ago. According to Tom's Hardware, whom AMD shared the pricing with, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5965WX, the 24 core, 48 thread entry level model, will start at US$2,399, which is more than a 32 core, 64 thread Threadripper 3970X, which has a retail price of US$1,999.

A step up is the 32 core, 64 thread Threadripper Pro 5975WX for US$3,299 and at the top of the stacks, sits the 64 core, 128 thread Threadripper Pro 5995WX for the hefty price of US$6,499. All three models have 128 PCIe lanes and a 280 W TDP. AMD seems to have decided to cash in on its core and thread advantage over Intel, as Intel's highest-end workstation chip is the Xeon W-3375, with 38 cores and 76 threads, which comes in at US$4,499, but only has half the PCIe lane count and a much smaller cache. That said, Intel is expected to launch its 4th generation of Xeon W processors, codenamed Sapphire Rapids later this year, which is expected to feature a 56 core, 112 thread SKU, which should bring some competition to AMD in this market segment.

SCHENKER Announces VIA 15 Pro and WORK series Ultrabooks

With the new VIA 15 Pro, SCHENKER has put together a unique overall package: The 1.45 kg ultrabook integrates AMD's efficient eight-core Ryzen 7 5700U, a 15.6 inch WQHD IPS display and two freely accessible and upgradeable M.2 SSD and RAM slots - a combination that is usually only found in significantly heavier gaming laptops with dedicated graphics cards. Unlike these, however, the VIA 15 Pro features AMD's energy-efficient, integrated Radeon graphics unit. With this outfit, the ultrabook is aimed at developers, programmers, and creative professionals, among others. The all-round office laptops SCHENKER WORK 15 and WORK 17 are also being updated with Intel's Alder Lake-P processors.

One of the most striking features of the SCHENKER VIA 15 Pro is a performance-enhanced AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with eight cores and 16 threads: instead of running the CPU with a TDP of 15 watts, which is common in the ultrabook sector, it can operate permanently at 35 watts in the highest performance profile ("enthusiast") - this way, it outperforms the majority of ULV processors and achieves a multi-score of 3937 points in Cinebench R20. The laptop's dual-fan cooling system was adopted from the 2020 predecessor model of the VIA 15 Pro, so it is designed for less efficient CPUs from the 54 watt TDP class and therefore guarantees superior and quiet cooling. Those who require somewhat less performance may select the medium performance profile ("balanced") for particularly quiet operation. Switching is possible in real time at the touch of a button via a keyboard shortcut.

The LANCOOL 216 is a mid-tower with excellent cooling and is configurable for air or All-In-One liquid cooling. AMD WMMA Instruction is Direct Response to NVIDIA Tensor Cores

AMD's RDNA3 graphics IP is just around the corner, and we are hearing more information about the upcoming architecture. Historically, as GPUs advance, it is not unusual for companies to add dedicated hardware blocks to accelerate a specific task. Today, AMD engineers have updated the backend of the LLVM compiler to include a new instruction called Wave Matrix Multiply-Accumulate (WMMA). This instruction will be present on GFX11, which is the RDNA3 GPU architecture. With WMMA, AMD will offer support for processing 16x16x16 size tensors in FP16 and BF16 precision formats. With these instructions, AMD is adding new arrangements to support the processing of matrix multiply-accumulate operations. This is closely mimicking the work NVIDIA is doing with Tensor Cores.

AMD ROCm 5.2 API update lists the use case for this type of instruction, which you can see below:
rocWMMA provides a C++ API to facilitate breaking down matrix multiply accumulate problems into fragments and using them in block-wise operations that are distributed in parallel across GPU wavefronts. The API is a header library of GPU device code, meaning matrix core acceleration may be compiled directly into your kernel device code. This can benefit from compiler optimization in the generation of kernel assembly and does not incur additional overhead costs of linking to external runtime libraries or having to launch separate kernels.

rocWMMA is released as a header library and includes test and sample projects to validate and illustrate example usages of the C++ API. GEMM matrix multiplication is used as primary validation given the heavy precedent for the library. However, the usage portfolio is growing significantly and demonstrates different ways rocWMMA may be consumed.

Alphacool Announces ES GPX Copper Carbon VGA Blocks

The new ES GPX Copper/Carbon water cooler with backplate is specifically designed for Alphacool's Enterprise Solutions. From now on, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080/3090 and AMD Radeon RX 6800/6800XT/6900XT/6950XT graphics cards (based on the respective reference design) can be actively water-cooled in the smallest space.

In order to save space in width and height during installation, the input and output have been relocated to the rear of the cooling block. The positioning of the connections makes the hosing much easier and thus enables the easy integration of the GPU cooler into the water circuit even in the tightest server housings. Thanks to the compact design, only 1 slot is required for mounting the cooler in the server rack instead of 1.5 slots as before. Alphacool enters new territory here with the choice of materials. The cooler top is made of carbon with the result that the water cooler is significantly lighter compared to Alphacool's ice blocks with acetal or acrylic tops.

Samsung Begins Chip Production Using 3nm Process Technology With GAA Architecture

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in semiconductor technology, today announced that it has started initial production of its 3-nanometer (nm) process node applying Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor architecture. Multi-Bridge-Channel FET (MBCFET), Samsung's GAA technology implemented for the first time ever, defies the performance limitations of FinFET, improving power efficiency by reducing the supply voltage level, while also enhancing performance by increasing drive current capability. Samsung is starting the first application of the nanosheet transistor with semiconductor chips for high performance, low power computing application and plans to expand to mobile processors.

Netac Announces Shadow II DDR5 Memory Series

Netac officially announced its release of Shadow II DDR 5 memory. Since the end of 2021, DDR5-related topics have maintained a high level of popularity. The first reason is that the market has been looking forward to new productivity tools for a long time. Second, compared with the previous generation, DDR5 has a revolutionary improvement in both appearance and performance, such as doubling the frequency and starting at 4800 MHz; Integrated PMIC power management chip, the voltage reduces to 1.1 V, and the power consumption is lower; On-die ECC error correction function is added to make the operation more stable.

AMD Software Adrenalin 22.6.1 Released

AMD today released the latest version of AMD Software Adrenalin. Version 22.6.1 WHQL adds support for Windows 11 22H2. It also adds optimization for F1 2022. Among the issues fixed are a performance drop noticed when playing "Fortnite" with multi-threaded rendering and DirectX 11 API; a stuttering issue noticed in "Overwatch" with cards such as the RX 6700 XT; higher than expected CPU usage with Instant Replay; and missing fan-tuning options on graphics cards such as the RX 590. MSI Launches the PRO H610M 12VO Motherboard

For those wondering what happened to the Intel 12VO standard for motherboards, well, it's not dead, but it seems like the motherboard makers have chosen to largely ignore it. However, MSI has just launched a new 12VO motherboard, the PRO H610M 12VO, which is as the model name implies, a H610 based mATX motherboard. MSI is targeting the PRO H610M 12VO towards business computers and it's not hard to see why once you take a closer look at the specs. This is a bare minimum board in every aspect possible, with the chipset covered by the smallest of heatsinks and the VRMs getting none at all.

The board has a mere two DDR5 memory slots, one PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slot for an NVMe drive, a single x16 PCIe 4.0 slot and a x1 PCIe 3.0 slot, as well as a second M.2 slot for an optional CNVi or PCIe based Wi-Fi module. There's also four SATA ports, an Intel based Gigabit Ethernet port, two rear USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, a PS/2 port and three audio jacks via an ageing Realtek ALC897 audio chip. Rather unusually for a budget board, MSI went with a DisplayPort 1.4 and an HDMI 2.1 port, although both are limited to 4K 60p output and there's also a VGA port, just in case. MSI only appears to provide one power adapter for SATA drives, which seems to be limited to two SATA power connectors, although there's a second connector on the board, for a second SATA power cable. Overall, not a particularly impressive product, but it does at least keep Intel's 12VO platform alive for another day.

ASRock Releases UEFI Updates for Next Generation Intel Processors for its 600-series Motherboards

ASRock has released UEFI/BIOS updates for at least 47 of its 600-series chipset based motherboards, which will add support for the next generation of CPUs from Intel. The new CPUs are of course Intel's 13th gen Core CPU's, codenamed Raptor Lake, even though ASRock doesn't specifically mention this anywhere in the text on its portal site. We're expecting to see similar announcements from the other motherboard makers in due time. ASRock doesn't go into any kind of details as to which CPUs are supported and the company doesn't appear to have updated its CPU support lists yet, which is a shame, but not entirely unexpected, since the Raptor Lake CPUs aren't expected to launch until later this year.

However, ASRock has implemented what the company calls Auto Driver Installer or ADI in this UEFI/BIOS update for the boards and this is likely to be an unpopular addition, as it means drivers will be automatically be downloaded and installed if the system is connected to the internet. Presumably there will be an option to disable this feature, but it appears to be enabled by default, which has proven to be an unpopular option when other companies have done it. Admittedly it could be a handy feature during a new build or OS reinstall, but it's also a potential attack vector for malware.

MediaTek Announces Commitment to Open New Semiconductor Design Center at Purdue University in Indiana

TSMC Expected to be Affected by Increased Electricity Costs in Taiwan

The island of Taiwan is in many ways very much still stuck in an era where the government controls most utilities and where there is little to no competition. For example, the government controls fuel prices, be that for your motor vehicle or for cooking and heating. This also applies to the cost of electricity in most cases and the Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced that the electricity price will increase by up to 15 percent for high usage customers, which translates to the industry. The increase might sound tiny at just over 1.3 cents per kilowatt hour, for a total cost of 10.43 cents per kWh. However, a company like TSMC that uses a lot of electricity, is expected to see an increase in costs of at least US$135 million per year, according to some Taiwanese news sources, while others claim it'll be as much as US$270 million.

TSMC does in all fairness produce some of its own electricity thanks to solar panels on many of its buildings and the company has also invested heavily in renewable energy. In fact, TSMC has bought up almost all available renewable capacity in Taiwan and the company is committed to using 100 percent renewable energy in the long term. Currently a mere 8 percent (based on 2020 estimates) is coming from TSMC's own efforts, but the company should be at somewhere around 12-15 percent overall. Even so, these extra costs are likely to be reflected in future customer pricing. It's the first price hike in four years, but as Taiwan is a manufacturing nation, TSMC is unlikely to be the only company affected, but the price hike is related to global inflation and is targeting high-usage businesses and consumers alike.

ASUS Announces Widest Range of Laptops Protected by ASUS Antibacterial Guard

ASUS today announced that ASUS Antibacterial Guard antibacterial protection is now protecting the widest ever range of ASUS laptops. NVIDIA Launches GeForce GTX 1630 Graphics Card

NVIDIA today launched the GeForce GTX 1630 entry-level graphics card. A successor to the GT 1030, the new GTX 1630 is an entry-level product, despite its roughly $150 MSRP. It is based on the older "Turing" 16-series graphics architecture, which lacks hardware-accelerated ray tracing or even support for DLSS. It is carved out from the same 12 nm "TU117" silicon as the GTX 1650 from 2019.

The GTX 1630 features exactly half of the 16 streaming multiprocessors present on the TU117. The 8 available SM work out to 512 CUDA cores, 32 TMUs, and 32 ROPs. The card comes with 4 GB as the standard memory size, and this is GDDR6 type, across a 64-bit wide memory bus. The card typically features just two 12 Gbps-rated 16 Gbit GDDR6 chips. The GPU operates at a boost frequency of 1785 MHz. The card lacks hardware-accelerated AV1 decode, and has media features consistent with the rest of the "Turing" family. At $150, it competes with the Radeon RX 6400 (which can be had for as low as $160), and the Arc A380.

NVIDIA GeForce 516.59 Game Ready Drivers Released

NVIDIA today released the latest version of its GeForce Game Ready drivers. Version 516.59 WHQL comes with optimization for F1 2022. The drivers also introduce support for Windows 11 22H2, and the "new" GeForce GTX 1630, besides CUDA 11.7. The drivers also fix a handful of issues, including artifacts noticed in Red Dead Redemption 2 (Vulkan), Minecraft Java Edition, and Second Life, when connecting using third-party viewers. Incorrect light-source rendering in Neverwinter Nights; and black textures in Path of Exile. A stuttering was noticed in games when you invoke the Xbox overlay, which has been fixed. Lastly, a bunch of stability issues with Unreal Engine 5 has been fixed.

Intel Core i9-13900K Raptor Lake Processor Goes on Sale on Black Market

Intel is set to launch its 13th generation Raptor Lake processor lineup for desktop users sometime in September or October. However, the market is already supplied with early-stage engineering samples of Raptor Lake-S SKUs used for testing and software optimization. Today, we have the first listing of the upcoming flagship Intel Core i9-13900K processor with eight P-cores and 16 E-Cores on the CPU. The anonymous seller claims that the CPU is working with ASUS Z690 ROG Apex motherboards, boots up, and can be overclocked, which means that this is one of the newer engineering sample revisions. The sample was listed for 2850 Chinese Yuan, translating to about 426 USD. This price should be close to the final MSRP, and the CPU is already sold.

What is interesting is the appearance of this CPU on the black market way ahead of the launch. We can expect to see more details emerge as we get closer to the launch time later this year.

Valve Confirms Steam Deck Weekly Manufacturing "More Than Doubled"

Valve, handlers of the world's most popular digital games store and manufacturers of the Steam Deck, have announced that they've been able to more than double weekly production of the handheld console. Due to the production "picking up", as Valve says it, the company expects to double the number of handhelds shipped each week. This is especially good news for users that were expecting to receive their devices in the 3Q - shipments for these particular orders will begin on June 30th.

Valve doesn't make it clear what exactly was bottlenecking production. Manufacturing and logistics have been showing signs of normalization following a couple of years with snag after snag due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent war in Ukraine. Overwhelming demand for graphics chips across the product spectrum may have pushed Valve to accept a smaller pie of AMD chips than the company would like to, and might be one of the reasons the company was forced to extend deliveries of pre-orders for the device.

GlobalWafers Selects Sherman, Texas for New Semiconductor Silicon Wafer Site

Hsinchu, Taiwan-based global semiconductor silicon wafer company, GlobalWafers, announced today that it plans to build a state-of-the-art 300-millimeter silicon wafer factory in Sherman, Texas, which is the first of its kind in the USA over twenty (20) years. Construction is expected to commence later this year. This 300-millimeter greenfield investment is consistent with the Company's announcement on February 6th of this year of brownfield and greenfield expansions totaling NTD 100 bn. This new Texas investment could also support as many as 1,500 jobs with production volumes ultimately reaching 1.2 mn wafers per month after multiple stages of equipment installation, in alignment with market demand.

300-millimeter silicon wafers are the starting material for all advanced semiconductor fabrication sites (or fabs), including recently announced United States (US) expansions by GlobalFoundries, Intel, Samsung, Texas Instruments and TSMC. Most of these wafers are currently manufactured in Asia, forcing the US semiconductor industry to highly rely on imported silicon wafers. This investment will represent the first new silicon wafer facility in the US in over two decades and close a critical semiconductor supply chain gap.

MSI Intros MAG CoreLiquid B-series AIO CPU Coolers

MSI today introduced the MAG CoreLiquid B line of entry-level all-in-one liquid CPU coolers. Models in the lineup include the MAG CoreLiquid B120 and B240, with radiator sizes of 120 mm x 120 mm and 240 mm x 120 mm, respectively. These coolers feature a simple, puck-shaped water-block, with an illuminated MSI Gaming logo that can be rotated to suit the orientation of your setup. The pump is integrated with the radiator, and features a 6-pole motor. The included fans feature three fixed-color LEDs (one each of red, blue, and green), turn at speeds between 500 to 2,000 RPM, pushing 21.63 to 78.73 CFM airflow. Among the CPU socket types supported are LGA1700, LGA1200, LGA115x, AM5, and AM4. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Intel Readies Professional Visualization Graphics Cards Under the Arc Pro Series

Intel is preparing to enter the professional visualization graphics card market with its upcoming Arc Pro series. This would put it in competition with graphics cards from NVIDIA and AMD, such as the Radeon Pro W-series, and RTX A-series. At least two SKUs have been confirmed in SiSoft SANDRA screenshots, the Arc Pro A40, and Arc Pro A50. Both appear to be based on the smaller 6 nm ACM-G10 silicon that physically features 1,024 unified shaders across 128 execution units (EU), or 8 Xe Cores, and up to 6 GB of GDDR6 memory across a 96-bit wide bus.

Intel could take a swing at entry-level pro-vis solutions from AMD and NVIDIA, such as the Radeon Pro W6400, Pro W6500M, NVIDIA RTX A2000, etc. There could be a design focus on multiple display connectivity options, as the cards could be targeted at commercial environments where workstations feature multiple high-resolution displays. The company could also develop mobile variants of these SKUs for mobile workstations. Intel could extensively advertise the media-acceleration and AI capabilities of the Xe-HPG architecture, including hardware-accelerated AV1 encode, and AI neural-net building, training, and inference acceleration. Another key differentiator for these cards could be validation by leading content-creation software vendors; and an elevated support level by Intel.
