The Raspberry Pi Foundation Launches the $6 Raspberry Pi Pico W

New product alert! In January last year, we launched the $4 Raspberry Pi Pico, our first product built on silicon designed here at Raspberry Pi. At its heart is the RP2040 microcontroller, built on TSMC's 40 nm low-power process, and incorporating two 133 MHz Arm Cortex-M0+ cores, 264kB of on-chip SRAM, and our unique programmable I/O subsystem. Since launch, we've sold nearly two million Pico boards, and RP2040 has found its way into a huge number of third-party products. We always believed that RP2040 was a great fit for commercial and industrial applications, but the global semiconductor shortage has vastly accelerated adoption. With millions of units on hand today, and pipeline in place for tens of millions more, design engineers who have been let down by their current suppliers have a perfect excuse to experiment.

Fast cores, large memory, and flexible interfacing make RP2040 a natural building block for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. But Pico itself has one obvious missing feature for IoT: a method for connecting to the network. Now, this is about to change. Today, we're launching three new members of the Pico family. Raspberry Pi Pico W is priced at $6, and brings 802.11n wireless networking to the Pico platform, while retaining complete pin compatibility with its older sibling. Pico H ($5) and Pico WH ($7) add pre-populated headers, and our new 3-pin debug connector, to Pico and Pico W respectively. Pico H and Pico W are available today; Pico WH will follow in August.

CISA Advises Owners of Certain D-Link Routers to Urgently Retire Them

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, or CISA, is advising consumers and businesses to retire a whole range of D-Link routers, due to the devices being EOL. This is due to a severe vulnerability that affects the devices that goes under the CVE-ID of CVE-2021-45382. This is a remote command execution (RCE) vulnerability and it's not likely to get patched by D-Link and is considered serious enough that these devices should be taken offline post-haste. The vulnerability would allow an attacker to take over these devices using "diagnostic hooks" in the ncc2 service, which is tied to the DDNS function and would allow an attacker to gain full access by injecting malicious code.

Proof of concept code already exists on GitHub, which makes the likelihood of this attack vector being used even more likely. The known affected devices so far are the D-Link DIR-810L, DIR-820L/LW, DIR-826L, DIR-830L, and DIR-836L and all hardware revisions are affected. Most of these routers were released around 2012 to 2014 and are either 802.11n or 802.11ac devices based on what appears to be Realtek or Ralink (now MediaTek) hardware. These aren't the only devices that CISA has given advice on recently, as the D-Link DIR-610 and DIR-645, as well as the Netgear DGN2200 are also devices that CISA recommends retirement for.

Welcome Wi-Fi 6, Goodbye 802.11ax: The Wi-Fi Alliance Reveals A New, Clearer Naming Scheme

Many of our readers would probably have no problem identifying the type of connectivity offered by Wi-Fi standards such as 802.11ac or 802.11n, but for many other users those differences have never been too clear.

That's precisely what the Wi-Fi Alliance, the organization that defines these standards, wanted to solve. In an official announcement, this body has revealed the new scheme to name Wi-Fi versions. The new names will make those versions much more easily differentiated both by manufacturers and especially by users.
